St Celfer, of Korean and American origin, currently lives between São Paulo and Seattle, the latter living off/on since 1990. A fan of Seattle grunge, was, once upon a time, in the 00’s New York scene performing, among other places, at CBGB’s, The Kitchen, Tonic, The Tank, Remote Lounge, Galapagos Art Space, Sputnik, and Stinger Club.  

During the isolation of the pandemic, St Celfer developed an innovative and sophisticated electronic instrument – a “gambiarra,” in Brasilian Portuguese – named Step4D™. This unpredictable instrument is designed to be played and heard live, in real time, and works in a way that bypasses step by step, rational thinking. Every unique performance embraces chaos and forms songs from turmoil.

St Celfer has twice been named New & Notable on BANDCAMP (2021 & 2022), and is the featured wave track for Infrasonica issue #7, ‘Voicing Abstraction’. Much of his work can also be found on his YouTube channel.

C. Asa Call is an assemblage artist living in Seattle and making work primarily at the cross-section of dance, film, installation, and poetry. She received her BA in Painting and Art History from Wichita State University, co-founded Coriolis Dance and was co-Artistic Director for 14 years. She is also the founder of The Shed, a performance installation space that facilitates residencies for artists with complex practices.

DECISIONS is pleased to welcome Hong Kong based producer ASJ to the label with ‘The Illusion Of Separation’. Deploying a blistering and emotive sonic palette, ASJ explores emotional alienation, difference and the social unity that nonetheless binds us — themes that are especially pertinent in the wake of Hong Kong’s recent political upheaval and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The journey begins with ‘Melancholy’, a distortion-streaked meditation on loneliness and isolation. The richly melodic ‘Pendulum’ speaks to the potential for personal growth that stems from an awareness of the cyclical nature of positive and negative mind states. Imagining life as a video game, ’The Game Host’ features playfully twisted vocals and syncopated percussion to evoke agency beyond systemic rules, while ’Chant To Eternity’ offers an ultra tough sonic aid to personal empowerment by drawing on the spiritually cleansing power of chanting. ‘Sublimity’ completes the release. Arcing from musique concrete into ethereal vocals before arriving at a hypnotically elevated plateau, ASJ considers changes of state in the field of chemistry as an analogue to moments of transcendence in our daily lives.

A distilled and ambitious body of work that captures the deeply personal, social and metaphysical realms, ‘The Illusion Of Separation’ is an affecting and timely new entry into ASJ’s catalogue. A ‘Magic Eye’ style stereogram artwork (view at a large size!) further embodies the illusory and cosmic dimensions of the release.

Carlos Marta is the Tijuana-based producer behind Benfika, an enigmatic music project from Infinite Machine that released his debut on the imprint back in 2015 with the EP 121214, taking him to open for Four Tet, Ben Ufo and play at Mutek festival in Mexico. In his most recent comeback Ruinas, he presents a mystical and ethereal release where he unveils his most overwhelming and rousing side with 5 absorbing and captivating tracks.

Ruinas is an eerie exploration on organic, celestial and crystalline sounds. A set of compositions effused in a synthetic and futuristic orchestral experience that incites cathartic sensations. The warm and meticulously put-together melodies of the 5 pieces that compose this EP generates a utopian sonic environment with otherworldly and mystical backgrounds.

Influenced by the powerful narrative components in Benfika’s production, Ruinas summons the memories and resilience of another dimension, where mythical surroundings emerge with arcane possibilities. Cyclic imaginaries of ancestral yet futuristic references collide in a dialogue between mixed dualities; pain and healing, desolation and disclosure, uncertainty and hope, evoking the feeling of an ongoing transformation.

The carefully processing on the melodies, samples and tonalities that Benfika meticulously assembled in
Ruinas don’t follow an accurate musical structure but were rather conceived as a living sonic-ecosystems, dissolving in complex layers of aerial ambiences.

In Exodexo the delicate harmonies of otherworldly frequencies resonate like an alien whisper while the gathering of synthetic voices in Pentimento creates a sacred invitation for a futuristic ritual. The deep and trance-indulging sonorities of Mundo Schizo crash with a percussive field of disruption, and the uncanny atmospheres of Ríos de Azoth dissolves for the unearthly vibes of Ollín, where overwhelming choruses and dislocated pianos mutate in immaculate melodies.

Ruinas It’s a promise of a new beginning, where devotional possibilities can coexist with the inherent chaos of spirituality. It is music created from a wide perception of entropy and the prospect of becoming-with transmutation. A reprogramming of the organic existence for unphysical transcendence.

Rituals that stream violently
through infinite cracks in time
generational chants stored in the abyss
reveal intrinsic shadows coded into every seed.
