Season 6, Ep 10 (Leigh-Anne Pinnock’s BBC Documentary, SWV Verzuz Xscape, Tank Going Deaf)

For the final episode of Season 6, it’s just Sope and Eden as Nic is feeling unwell. During the listens section, X-Factor alumni Shayne Ward and Leona Lewis have their careers randomly put under the microscope as a result of Eden’s recommendations 26:41). Kicking off the news agenda is VERZUS who have announced their newest battles between Eve and Trina in addition to Bow Wow and Soulja Boy. Last week was relatively slow one news wise - at least by the boys’ standard. No one was really moved by any of the major topics that buzzed around the music landscape in the last 7 days. Consequently, the episode structure is looser. Before officially kicking off the news section Eden asks Sope and Nic for their thoughts on whether artists in the UK are victims of incorrect genre categorizations (00:47:46). The boys then move onto the announcement that the Jonas Brothers are reuniting for a new album and share their thoughts on the new single ‘Sucker’ (01:08:48). A swift sidetrack sees the boys discuss the short-lived fame of OSH and what they think is next for people like him and Loz (01:16:46). The big elephant in the room is finally addressed as the boys once and for all offer their two pence on R. Kelly’s sexual abuse and child pornography changes (01:21:23). Next up Eden and Nic discuss their wider grievances with Ariana Grande’s persona in the midst of the recent controversy about her headlining Manchester Pride (01:48:55). Leading to a debate of what a ‘stan’ is and means (02:05:04). Lastly, the boys discuss the changing face and shifting connotations associated with performing in Vegas following the announcement that Drake will be hosting his own his residency there later this year (02:08:42).

Next up, it has been rumoured that Skepta and Adele have been dating. Steph and the boys hilariously question the validity of this union and whether it will last. Rounding off the news is the worrying comments made by J-Hus on social media indicating he might be suicidal. Eden leads an impassioned comments on the many pressures artists face from their family, friends, fans and in J-Hus’ case; gang-related rivals and how this can be detrimental to one’s mental health. Concluding the episode is a enlightening and educational interview with Steph. She speaks about her experience working in the music industry in a range of roles that have included marketing, PR and playlist curation. While also commenting on the importance of black people in these spaces needing to humanise themselves and make their knowledge accessible.

For this week’s episode, the boys kick things off by talking about the “death” of the iTunes app as Apple has announced that they are set to render the app obsolete effective immediately. As the in-house tech expert of the trio, Eden takes the reins on explaining why this has happened (00:16:19). Drake is in hot water again as his father claims that Drake has allegedly been exaggerating an “absentee father” narrative in his music just to sell records (00:21:48). After a year behind bars, City Girls’ JT has finally been freed from jail. Nic and Sope discuss how the City Girls will fare going forward now that the full team is back together, declaring that their next moves will be make or break for them (00:31:27). Next up, the boys pick apart the winners and nominees from the 2019 Hip Hop Awards, hilariously questioning the relevance and need for some of the categories (00:36:10). Amongst this, Sope randomly shares an impromptu review of the movie ‘Hustlers’, particularly honing in on Lizzo’s appearance (00:54:30). Opening the news section, Nic exhaustively and comprehensively runs through the highlights of comments from Kanye’s recent promo run for new album ‘Jesus Is King’ (00:23:28). T.I. and Iggy Azalea have recently been engaging in a war of words on social media following T.I.’s verbally regretting that Iggy was a blunder in the trajectory of his career as a music executive (00:42:30). Rounding off the episode, the boys bring back ‘Groupchat Convos’ where Sope and Eden in a series of rants with no structure break down the many reasons why they think Ciara’s career didn’t reach the same heights Rihanna’s did (00:47:27).

After a lengthy hiatus allowing for rest over the Christmas and New Year period, Eden, Sope and Nic are back! Season 4 is finally here and with a jam-packed episode. Kicking off the news agenda this week is Kelis’ recent interview with The Guardian where she revealed that The Neptunes swindled her out of a huge cut of royalties on her first two albums. Harlem World rapper Mase follows suit as he exposes former boss Diddy for refusing to sell him back his masters. Speaking out against his hypocritical speech at a pre-Grammys event where he said the organisation needs to do better by black artists. This seamlessly leads unto a full scale breakdown of the 2020 Grammy Awards with Sope, Nic & Eden sounding off on this year’s winners, losers. Closing the episode out, each of the boys take the time to consider where they all personally stand with the Grammys as an institution in 2020 and how much they value do they still place on it.

Season 4 EP 1 'CLOWNISH VIBES' (GRAMMY'S, KELIS VS PHARRELL & MASE VS DIDDY)

Welcome back to Don’t Alert the Stans!
 
For this week’s episode, Nic leads a tribute to slain rapper Pop Smoke who was murdered at the age of 20. With this being the latest in a flurry of deaths to take place this year, the boys reflect on his squandered potential. Looking at how he was bridging the gap between the drill scenes in the US and UK. Next up is an increasingly violent and intense beef that is brewing between two of the UK’s veteran MC’s Sneakbo and Dot Rotten. Eden calls out the people on social media following gossip platforms who are revelling in this as if it’s a form of entertainment. Is another Fyre Festival in our midst? The announcement of the Lovers & Friends Festival resulted in a lot of confusion as several of the acts on the bill claimed they weren’t set to perform. Rounding up the episode this week is the 2020 Brit Awards where each of the boys sound off on the winners/losers and performances. During this topic, a conversation surrounding black nepotism in regards to Mabel and Neneh Cherry is sparked where its debated if Mabel’s success aids in opening doors for more black artists in the UK.

Closing the episode is an in-depth dissection of Doja Cat’s official response(s) to the many allegations of white supremacist and self-hating behaviour surrounding her in the last few weeks.

Rounding up the news junket this week, is the announcement that Republic Records have decided that they are to completely do away with the racially-coded term ‘urban’ at every facet of the company.

For this week’s episode, the boys kick things off by celebrating the return of Channel U. A childhood staple in all their lives, the boys reflect on their memories and experiences with the channel, while putting forth ideas about how they should position themselves in 2020 (00:19:20). Lupe Fiasco caused enormous debate among Hip-Hop purists and Gen Z fans online when he tweeted that he’s a better lyricist than Kendrick Lamar. Spurring a discussion about what constitutes “real lyricism” and whether elitist and classist ideals play a part these designations (00:38:30). Acclaimed music institution Rolling Stone recently unveiled their new and revised list of the ‘The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time’, updating the so-called definitive music canon to be more inclusive of people of colour and women. The boys revel in the some of the new additions of particular artists and genres, but they also point out the arbitrary nature of lists like this. What purpose do they serve in this day and age? (01:08:02). Rounding off the episode this week is Tory Lanez who has controversially decided to address the Megan Thee Stallion allegations by releasing an album of passive-aggressive and self-centred tracks (01:41:03).

Elsewhere he’s a contributing editor at Bandcamp and has written for BBC, The Fader, The Nation, The Atlantic, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly and more. Nic sets off proceedings by congratulating and praising Sope for contributing to the success of Headie One’s ‘Edna’ which debuted at No.1 on the UK Album Charts (2:46). The news section is short and sweet as the boys put their two pence in about the controversy that arose from Ivorian Doll’s Daily Duppy on GRM Daily. An opportunity she used to continue her long-running beef with Abigail Asante and MISS RFABULOUS (28:45). Rounding up this week’s episode is an in-depth interview with Marcus J. Moore where they discuss his origins for wanting to write the very first Kendrick Lamar biography. The conversation also moves into the importance of key moments in his career like the ‘Control’ verse to losing several Grammys to Macklemore in 2014. While also discussing the space, he occupies in Black America’s heart and psyche and how he followed the innovative paths set by Miles Davis and A Tribe Called Quest (41:26).

Kicking off the news agenda this week is The Weeknd who has been unveiled as the headliner for next year’s Superbowl Halftime Show. It’s questioned whether he has the chops to command a stage of such stature, while questioning why the likes of Usher and Pink haven’t been called to do this yet (1:01:01). Next up is the ongoing legal entanglement between Scooter Braun and Taylor Swift. It has come to light that Braun has sold Swift’s catalogue to private equity firm Shamrock Capital for an estimated $300M (1:27:24). Closing out the episode is the series of controversies a cluster of the UK’s most notable MC’s have encountered in the last week, with Eden & Nic choosing to focus on the allegations that state Dutchavelli is sexually involved with underage girls (1:51:21).
