Hangaw: We begin with the breath. In. Out. Connecting us to Creation, and to the cycles of life -- breathe in-- and death -- breath out.  For in the beginning there was Tubigan below -- breathe in --  and Languit above -- breathe out. They brought life into the world, their children Paros, the wind of our breath, and Dagat, the water of our breath. When they brought life, so too did they bring death. Breathe in. Breathe out. But with death, there also comes life. Breathe in. Breathe out. The cycle continues, connecting us to them, to our ancient ancestors, the gugurang, to our community, to kapwa. Breathe in. Breathe out. For we are kawayan. We are bamboo. Follow your breath.


Tulang: Seed or bone. Let us start with the bamboo seed. Search for it as you breathe in, and breathe out. It will be near your navel. The seed may be in your belly. Or your guts. Or your liver. Or your womb. Or your sacral area. Or your pelvic bones. When you find it, breathe into it. As you breathe in, let it expand and glow. This seed holds the structure, the bones, of all creation. This seed connects you to community, to kapwa. Breathe in. Breathe out. 

Gamot: Roots. The manggagamot is the healer, the root doctor, that brings us in balance with ourselves and creation. From our bamboo seed, we begin to grow roots. Let them grow downwards as you breathe in, and breathe out. Maybe you feel the roots through your hips, your thighs, your knees, your calves, your shins, your ankles, your feet, all the way to your toes. Maybe you feel them stretching beyond your rear, right into the ground. Your roots search for our grandparent Tubigan below, the first waters, that gave us our blood, that connects us to all our ancestors. Breathe in. Breathe out. Each time you breathe out, let your roots journey through the earth, Daga, our parent, our magurang. As your roots journey, so too will you find the roots of other bamboo. Breathe in. Breathe out. These roots connect us to Daga and to Tubigan. These roots connect us to our ancestors. These roots connect us to community, to kapwa. Breathe in. Breathe out.

Hawak: The stalk of a plant or the torso of a body. Let us return to our bamboo seed. A stalk begins to grow. Let it grow upwards as you breathe in, and breathe out. Maybe you feel the stalk in your spine, your diaphragm, your solar plexus, your lungs, your heart, your brain. Your stalk searches for our grandparent Languit above, the first sky, that gave us light, that gave us our thoughts, that connects us to all the knowledge of creation. Breathe in. Breathe out. This stalk connects us to Languit. This stalk connects us to beings that live under Languit. This stalk connects us to community, to kapwa. Breathe in. Breathe out.

Sanga: Branches or the crossroads. From our stalk begins to grow branches. Let it grow upwards and to the side as you breathe in, and breathe out. Maybe you feel the branches in your shoulders, your biceps, your elbows, your forearms, your wrists. Your branches search for other bamboo. Breathe in. Breathe out. These branches connect us to each other. These branches connect us to community, to kapwa. Breathe in. Breathe out.

VIII. PAMAYANAN

IX. sansinukob.  universe.  creation.   This completes our nine song meditation cycle.  This final piece starts with a Gandingan, a Mindanaoan "talking gong" and ends as a chorus of voices returning to the original source.  Returning to the one.  As our world changes, it is impossible not to change with it.  So we release DATU into the ether and welcome our next cycle #fullmoon
