An original take on the old English folk song, 'The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird'. I was writing a completely different version when this one kind of stole into my head as a bonus. I have called it Version 1 to distinguish the  two, although the other one is quite different and involves guitar and key changes etc!

This is my interpretation of the plaintive song of the cuckoo. Despite the fact that it is a bad character of the avian world, its call is still the iconic sound of the English countryside in Spring. If you're tempted to feel sympathy for this homeless vagrant, just think of the baby birds displaced by its voracious offspring, and the hapless mothers trying to feed the murderers of their own children! 
I wrote this tune nearly fifty years ago when I was training to be a teacher at Becketts Park, Leeds. In all this time I never came up with any suitable words so at last, in desperation, I pinched some traditional ones. I had to adapt the tune to make it fit but I'm not wholly displeased with the result. I didn't want to fall off the twig with this tune never having seen the light of day!

This was a song I wrote in the 1980's in support of the nurses in their pay dispute. I sang it in the Final of the John Birmingham Cup at Whitby and gained the runner up spot, together with a bottle of Cranberry wine! Recorded on my mobile phone.

I was experimenting with some modal chord progressions in this song. Found it among some old recordings and struggled to work out what the chords were! I liked the modulation back to the start key.

I wrote this song for a laugh. With luck others might find it amusing too. Thanks to my friend Misha for the electric guitar work.

Molly Leigh was a poor old woman living near Burslem on Trent in Staffordshire in the 1740's. She lived by selling milk from her few cows. The local vicar suspected her pet blackbird of turning the beer sour in his favourite pub and hence accused her of witchcraft. What an idiot! It makes you wish there was a hell so he could rot in it. She died before the case came to trial which was probably a blessing as it spared her whatever suffering might have been inflicted by the justice system of the time. As a last act of spite the blackbird was thrown into the grave and buried alive. Legend has it that dancing round her tomb will conjure up her ghost!

A song to commemorate the collapse of a colliery spoil heap which engulfed the little village school at Aberfan in South Wales on the morning of Friday, 21st October 1966. By the time the collapse was over 116 children were dead, along with 5 teachers. 

Just me and my guitar, singing my song about Muhammed Ali.I must confess to having a soft spot for the old guy. It took some moral fibre to take the stance he did, at the cost of both his public reputation and his livelihood. Nice to see that history has, in the end, exonerated him, but it's really sad to see him struggling with the Parkinsons.
