After hearing the news of Simons passing and remembering with friends the subject of a certain mixtape came up …we all searched our boxes of cassettes without much luck and some empty cases …however Pete Slotter discovered and found what might well be the only existing copy …and as luck would have it the original tape!
Recorded at Simon DK's flat in Nottingham after the after party on a DiY Bounce night in 1994 after Bath crew John Kesecki & Pete Slotter went back to his and asked him to make a tape, which he did and named it 'Float Laboratory'. 
It's a lovely pitched down mix perfectly capturing those early hours.
It was brought down to Bath - copied and played ALOT!!. It was one of those tapes that just did the rounds and was loved by many…
So it was only right at this time to immortalise it and make it available for you to enjoy again or hear it for the first time...

A very special podcast for us from the one and only Simon DK (DiY).

Recorded Live @ Earth in 1995 this podcast is still sounding fresh today capturing DiY perfectly. DiY soundsystem are one of our biggest influences and their parties are a pinnacle part of clubbing history.

Massive shout out to Simon for allowing us to re-upload this bit of magic.

The DiY Sound System was one of Britain's first house sound systems. The group "divided their activities between free parties and legal club nights, acting as a bridge between counter-culture and the mainstream".

It was created in Nottingham in 1989 as a reaction against the growing number of rave promoters whose bias was towards their own financial enrichment, rather than the joy of their party-goers. They wished to form a cohesive, collective, political front against the prevailing anti-rave legislation that was beginning to come into force at that time. This became more marked around the time of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, with DiY playing a key role in the largest illegal rave ever put on at Castlemorton Common Festival prior to the Bill and a constant stream of illegal, outdoor parties (often at travellers' sites, quarries and disused airfields) all over the country. Simon Reynolds writes that DiY threw "free parties at abandoned airfields or on hilltops, drawing a mixed crowd of urban ravers and crusty road warriors".[2]

DiY also worked successfully in the realm of legitimate club nights, with their "Bounce" night touring the country as well as being a staple of Nottingham's night life. Its popularity, connected to its lack of concern for dress codes and its non-exploitation of its loyal clubbers, coupled with its very particular form of deep, soulful, often minimal house music, led to it being recognised as one of the top ten club nights in Britain by The Times.

In 1993, they also began their own record label, Strictly 4 Groovers, which later became known as DiY discs. They released house music on vinyl until 2006, which included releases by local talents Atjazz, Rhythm Plate and Charles Webster. The collectives primary DJ's - Simon DK, Digs and Woosh - still play at various nights in the U.K., Europe and United States.

DiY still occasionally hold free parties, typically to celebrate a milestone date - on 19 September 2009, DiY celebrated their 20th birthday with a free party in near their home town of Nottingham.,[3] while on 23 August 2014, they their 25th (Silver) birthday with a free party held in a field in Leicestershire.

Inspired by the 30th Anniversary of Nottingham's legendary DiY Collective, this mix features a collection of music created across that timespan by musicians and producers from within the DiY core,close associates & the wider house music family that drew inspiration from the trailblazing musical, hedonistic & cultural blitzkrieg that they spearheaded throughout the 1990s and beyond. Nottingham area producers such as Inland Knights / Andy Riley  , Neil Tolliday (aka Nail / Bent) - Charles Webster(aka Furry Phreaks)Rhythm Plate(also Yse Saint Laur'Ant), Ron Basejam, Schmoov- all included here -  emerged from this scene and era, many releasing their debut releases on DiY Discs. 
DiY's importance  within the house music world and the wider culture - mainly in UK but also internationally, while surely not yet fully recognised, should not be underestimated. As well as  being in the vanguard of promoting underground house music through their own early 90's club nights and parties in Nottingham , their mix tape releases and record label, DiY were one of the first to fuse house music , free festival ethos and Jamaican sound system culture, creating DiY Sound System.
Along with other like-minded maverick musical warriors they pioneered the outdoor /countryside/ under the stars/ summer free party. This irrevocably changed thousands of people's lives,  altered their way of looking at the world and suggested how we might live and socialise...
In pursuit of this utopian vision, property / drug and other laws were violated for the greater good and DiY put their personal safety/liberty on the line every weekend across those heady summers in the 90's,  to entertain and enlighten.
The well documented gathering at Castlemorton in May 1992, marked a  turning point. DiY  were one of the few systems flying the flag for underground "proper" house music....
Direct DiY action against the now infamous Criminal Justice Bill followed-  Other sound systems, notably Smokescreen, picked up the mantle in the 90s.
Of course, the utopian vision didn't materialise & as happens in such heady hedonistic worlds, there were deaths, prosecutions, jailings, social and  personal misdemeanours and casualties en route.......but hey, what a journey for those involved, and what a legacy. 
Many DiYers are still out there agitating, educating and organising to this day.
Their free party blueprint laid solid foundations, and in spite of restrictions that have curtailed the ability of anyone to recreate what DiY achieved in that decade, austerity driven Police cuts have seen a renaissance in recent years.
All of the tracks included here are made by people who have direct connection to DiY or who grew up in or adopted  Nottingham East Midlands region as their home. Includes as yet unreleased tracks from "newer" Nottingham producers such as Jamie Deep and Coxie.

Diy free-party crew 88’-99’ need  I have to say any more…I’ve matured musically over past 8 yrs which was the last time I listened to any house music in any kind of block listening. It went to head and I burned myself out I guess  to much of a good thing cracked me. 
           So coming out of retirement I now feel re born thx to oxfords simple nights at bullingdon cowley rd oxford. And a gig request at esp jo’burg( due to my spine bak breakages that git cancelled which was the reason I came out of retirement like) so I went to see dj Chloé Robinson @ Simultaneously les production night, Bullingdon arms OX4, and this drive me to drag my cd satchels out and my vinyl cases get sum dexs highjack a 4channel mixer off my dad,(rock&r I’ll dj) and got myself re going everything sat on boxes they came in anything just to get the vinyl’s spinning yeah!!! This was April 23 and my accident was may 23’. 
       so im re learning with better mixing styles and effect-usage, digital sampling ￼￼but at the heart of it all is my luv for DiY the ethos the music the parties being there when it waa all happening getting to know the family well and feelings the losses very deaply when two members left our mortal-coil, god bless Pete and Simon thankyou for all your music and encouragement.
     So I’m experimenting better recording and production softwares that have developed since I last used them… so let’s see what happens ( big thankyou to all the diy family and S4g/DiY disks).
