Mars_ Orbital Approach

This was a song sequence originally developed for a solo album that ultimately became parts of my 2014 release "Of Those Things Left Unsaid". There are many ideas that are partially sketched out with solo piano and synth others are closer to their final versions on the CD. The vast majority provided me with ideas that will ultimately be on the next album. This is typically how I work, slowly I amass a bunch of ideas that I stitch together to form arcs that represent emotional or thematic feelings in me. Think of this as my sketch book, I have many other sketches of long music arcs that yet to complete or provide lunching points songs that I may just put up here.

Cover Anyone

My cover of Welcome to the Machine. A thing to do that I always said I would do is cover a song soup to nuts. I did not plan on singing, infact that is the clean vocal feed from vocoder. Nothing really is very clean as I did no preplanning and just played after memorizing the progression and then making it my own. This was only for my own amusement. I hope it amuses you. Basically all done with a mellotron micro and a lot of OB6.

WTTM V2DM

This track uses the Synthesis Technology chord table to simulate a 3 voice analog shift register or ASR. As you can see in the pattern below, each note enters thru the first column & with each trigger is pushed to the next, followed by a new note behind (fuller explaination: https://learningmodular.com/glossary/asr/). Playing all these notes at once (i.e. polyphonically) produces a sequence of chords reminiscent of the Tangerine Dream sound. For distinction, each voice uses a different ROM bank/wave table but all the modulation inputs are slaved to osc1's X and Y parameters, respectively, to sweep thru the oscillators' wavetables in a parallel movement. To enrich the mix, I also did a second pass of the pattern, transposed up an octave, and layered it later in the track. 
    The ASR pattern (first audible around 1:30) is based on the first line, slightly transposed and translated into offsets, of a notation by Stephen Drake that I downloaded (from Muffwigglers.com ?) You can cut and paste the pattern directly into a TAB file for your own experiments - I used a root note of C2 for osc1. All sounds from E70 except one part from a Xaoc Kamieniec in self-generating mode.

A unique feature of many independent labels is that they’re closely intertwined with one person’s taste and vision. Instead of emphasizing a genre, these ventures often reflect a specific scene or time. Like Jealous Butcher Records, these labels exemplify the true labor of love that can go into an album release. 

In 1991, Rob Jones started Jealous Butcher in Eugene, Oregon. Since then, he’s released countless records from some of the state’s most exciting artists -- many on the verge of their big break. On this episode, Jones describes the history of Jealous Butcher, the philosophy behind the label, and how his business has (and intentionally has not) adjusted to today’s music industry. We also hear from Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), who released a new album with Craig Ross earlier this year through Jealous Butcher.

This album is a very personal one. It reflects a long time of upheaval and reinvention, which is now over with the release of this relatively emotional work. The rebirth of something that has always existed and has now rearranged itself. Tabula Rasa.
