ROAD TALK

Heavy Weight Division is the DJ/MC combo Dave Gee and Diggadee MC.  These two have been putting in work over the last few years in the US Dubstep scene.  They are residents at Brooklyn’s premier dubstep monthly event, DARKROOM, which turns 3 in May 2012. They’ve also been busy playing all over the US and have done several showcases at WMC, SXSW, and Starscape.  Their Murda Style EP, co-produced with Trigon, received great response and was featured on BBC Radio as well as many top blogs.  

This mix is a follow up to 2010’s Heavy Weight Division, Round 1.   You’ll hear more than a few unreleased tunes from producers like MRK1, Downlink, and Von D.  HWD2 was recorded with 2 turntables and a microphone.  Sit back and enjoy the ride through several sub-genres of dubstep with Dave Gee on the controls and Digga Bruck Shot as your host.

Dave Gee and MC Diggadee team up to form Heavy Weight Division and bring you “Round 1.” This DJ/MC Dubstep duo have had a busy year. They’ve played dozens of shows up and down the East Coast including Winter Music Conference and Starscape. They also made their way out to Puerto Rico and Paris in the last several months. When at home in Brooklyn, they hold down a residency at Brooklyn’s Premier Dubstep monthly, Dark Room.

2010 was a huge year of building with different scenes, releasing mixes, playing shows, and the beginning of producing original material. While they are known to perform together live, this is the first official mix from these partners in grime. Round 1 is a high speed ride through a dark world of bass and powerful beats. It consists of various unreleased tracks from some of the genres most prolific producers as well as the Cops remix by Dave Gee & Trigon ft. DZ.

With residencies at Dark Room and Dub Nation, original tunes in the works, and a rapidly growing show schedule, this is an act to keep an eye on heading into the new year.

Heavy Weight Division Round 1

In a new era where the term “DJ” is used very loosely, I feel that it is important to explain to the new generation what exactly a DJ is.  A DJ is a Disc Jockey, a person who takes 2 (or more) songs and creates something new out of them through physically mixing, cutting and scratching.  As a DJ, I want my mixes to represent what true DJing is.  

This is not a “studio mix” put together in a program. This is a continuous DJ mix, recorded on 2 Technic 1200’s and a Rane 56 mixer.  2013 is probably one of the last years that you will hear DJ mixes done on turntables. Enjoy the crackle of the needle on the record.  Enjoy hearing a mix go off and then get corrected half a second later.  Enjoy the sound of a record being pulled back. That is what DJing sounds like.

This mix is called “Death of the DJ” because those who embody the classic definition of a DJ are quickly fading away.  The focus is now on the producer. This is a good thing for the progression of the music.  However, the art of DJing this music live has fallen to the wayside.  These producers must still learn how to create a vibe through their track selection and take the listeners on a journey that builds up, climaxes, and then brings them back down. I hope you enjoy bumping this mix as much as I did making it.

DEATH OF THE DJ -DAVE GEE

I made this mix a little while ago for a Cali road trip I went on before the world shut down.  This was the soundtrack for a hell of a ride.  I recorded this right before I left for the airport and threw in just about every genre you can think of. I did it in one shot on 2 turntables like a big boy. This mix is up for streaming now for all of you to enjoy during these turbulent times...
