MIDNIGHT AND DARK WATER

Midnight and dark water 
Daub the dredger’s crew 
With ribbons of shadow.

Echoes chase their tails 
Across the oil slicked 
Cobbled quay.

Degenerate wharf side buildings 
Droop their noses through the gloom,
Skirting the ring road that avoids the town.

And everything stays low,
Under the searchlight’s unforgiving eye,
That holds a candle to the sky.

It’s an empty show of strength,
To the players 
On the ground.
