Two steps forward, 3 steps back . . . Total mixed emotions after this last year, including musically - been alot of drivel on the techno scene, and the club situation has obviously been frustrating - but there's still been lots of quality VAs and releases, and it's been good to see plenty of acts getting angry and political. Whether it's The Bug's apocalyptic remembrance of Grenfell, or Hide's terrifying condemnation of Brock Turner (via his dad's grovelling statement of support), there's been plenty to remind us that there's still alot of work to be done. Hopefully things go a bit more back to normal at last next year and we all get to feel safe on the dancefloor again . . .

2024 felt like a bad dream, even shittier than the one before. When my mum got taken into care in 2023 it was like her worst nightmare finally  coming true, and there was nothing I could do about it. Then my wee brothers illnesses and self-blame took him away. Damage was done when he woke up next to one of his best pals dead a couple years before, even tho he managed to convince the people that initially blamed him otherwise (the same people that made me n mum have to leave her home the first time) I don't think he ever got round to forgiving himself (i don't think it was anything to do w him, they were on different trips and what happened could have happened to most anyone and we are def all lucky it hasn't happened more to all of us). 

2024 just kept swinging between horror and defiant bursts of joy, il be damned if I can't use something as an excuse for a silver lining. For every moment of peace and happiness there was something else upsetting, and that's not even getting into world events, which I know weigh heavy over all of us. It's like that bad dream we all woke up to in 2020 keeps shifting the goalposts and saying 'ha, you thought I was gone, wait til you see this!' And I have no doubt 25 will have it's cards up its sleeve ready to play just when we get complacent. 

So here's another of those grim grotty but hopefully cathartic mixes to flush out the negative energy a bit. I'm gonna keep pushing this year to be more creative, more helpful, more present and hopefully I won't have to do another one this time next year . . .

Kontravoid / Buzz Kull Hype Mix (synth, EBM, industrial, acid, rave)

Gonna do a few mixes covering some of our fave genres - there's been so much quality EBM this year that I haven't been able to cover it all in the mixes I've been doing so figured it was about time to do one solely dedicated to this uniquely funky but hard subgenre. Threw a few OGs in there (F242, PTP/Ministry, NE etc) to show a little respect to the forefathers! Every one of these has been blasted in the club at some point, always worth getting down early in the evening (next even 02/12) to get an earful before the techno kicks in! Speaking of which, on top of our next Revolution Radio on 06/12 and our in-store sesh in Manchester on 08/12 we have a new night in the pipeline focusing more exclusively on the harder technoid stuff, stay tuned . . .

Orphx have been my fave industrial techno act for a good while, and one of my fave things about them is their remixes. They always cook up something epic that stands apart from the original while respecting the source. One of the first mixes I recorded back in 2015 paid tribute to this (https://soundcloud.com/dave-nullvoid/orphxd), and since then there's been a ton of new remixes, so I've been wanting to do another one (I already used some of their recent remixes in other mixes so haven't repeated the likes of FLA, Essaie Pas, Denise Rabe etc). September '20 Mix (Fast EBM / Synth / Industrial Techno)

NULL / VOID celebrated its 3rd birthday in July, but with lockdown at its peak we had to settle for a live-streamed event, which was a banging evening thanks in no small part to Soft Riot and Skrot Centralen's sets!

Conceived as a monthly club-night blending dancefloor-oriented industrial, techno and EBM - something popular elsewhere but lacking in Glasgow - we started on Sunday 2nd July 2017, taking the first Sunday slot in Nice N Sleazy's basement. We were thrilled to see such a mixed crowd show up and this only built over the first few months, encouraging us to put on our first live show for Hallowe'en that year. We chose goth overlord Qual to fit with the Hallowe'en theme, and synth wizard Soft Riot came onboard as support. The night was a resounding success, which led to us focussing increasingly on live acts (along with a few of our fave fellow DJs).

Since then we've had live acts playing most months - such as techno heavyweight Duellist, local rave wiz Sluhg, industrial icon E.S.A. and EBM master Autumns - and DJs like JD Twitch of Optimo and Ben Techy. We've also done occasional events in larger venues where we've had guests like NYC's Andi Harriman (of Synthicide) Keepsakes and Christina Sealey of Orphx.

We were really hoping to be able to have a party to celebrate making it to 3 years but obviously there are bigger things going on - missing the live gigs gave us the idea to put together some tracks from the guests we've loved so much over the years, almost like a mini-festival for your headphones. We're pumped to have local legends like Kleft, Denizens and South Heights rubbing shoulders with international belters Multiple Man and Celldod,  while there's new flesh in the form of punkish upstarts A Civil Terror and Skrot Centralen plus a debut from one of oor Dirty Marc's own projects, Duras.

We are donating any proceeds from this release (tape/digital) to Scotland's own Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights - there's so much we want to highlight and help all over the world, but for now there's still work to be done on our doorstep.
