This was a live mix playing a stack of old Taiwanese pop records trying to capture the island's take on funk, disco and garage in the 1970s. It was recorded live off the decks during a three-month residency at W Hotel, Taipei Yen Bar in Jul-Sep 2022.

Live mix from all-vinyl set May 20, 2023 at Bad Mama, Keelung. These are mostly late 1970s and early 1980s Mandarin records of disco, funk and pop tunes, though there are also some Cantonese and Malaysian recordings and a few original songs. As far as I can tell, these represent singers and recordings from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

**Because most of these covers were created before these countries signed on to international copyright treaties, they were not necessarily in violation of any copyright laws at the time they were released. However, due to the imposition of the US copyright regime since the mid-1980s, most of these recordings will never be reissued and will live only on the original vinyl and in some cases on YouTube. But whatever the law, this music is a total blast, so please turn it up , learn to sing along in Mandarin and... Let's boogie now! Yah!

Let DJ Bootleg Oh Yeah spin you back to the golden age of the Taiwan Economic Miracle, playing DJ sets of vintage vinyl and rare releases that rocked the party in Taiwan of the 1970s and 1980s. This music might now be classified as "rare groove" or "freakbeat," but the true history is an alternative Asian version of go-go 60s, garage, funk, soul, and disco. The records Oh Yeah plays are largely Taiwanese pop, though also mixed with vintage Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian records as well as Taiwan-produced bootlegs of Western rimen yinyue, or "hot music" (熱門音樂), a cover-all term for Western hits. The tracks themselves are the experiments and leftfield releases that nailed the funky grooves but were too ahead of their time for the mainstream. These tunes are now being mined and rediscovered by crate-digging DJs and new generation pop stars, who are creating an imagined Taiwanese musical past of music that was funkier than a three-dollar bill.

ON BOOTLEG RECORDS

From the 1960s to the 1980s, Taiwan's record industry got its start by producing massive quantities of pirated vinyl records, much of it originally brought in by US soldiers on military bases across Taiwan. By the 1970s, Taiwan's "record companies" would check the weekly Billboard charts, then within a few days, pirate all the songs and release a compilation of that week's top Western hits. Sometimes multiple companies would release the exact same record at the same time. DJ Bootleg Oh Yeah has been digging through the NTD 100 dollar bins of Taiwanese flea markets to preserve this wild slice of music history.
