a short excerpt off new hour long piece of  ringing singing piercing insect psycho acoustics

about:

the main insect featured here is the first one that drew me to another world, through its sound. a piercing high ringing frequency that seems to go on and on, often alternating with a slower, winding kind of motion, until the sound rises, peaks and drones again. some of these cycles are short, a minute or two a round, others seem to go for an hour, their winding down phase often partly silent; many play in 10 to 20 minute cycles. their song can differ from one region to the other, like dialects. their sound can be heard for miles. it’s ear-splitting loud when you’re close.

i’ve been wanting to do this piece for a long time, maybe since i returned from my first half year in thailand, early 1995. one recording herein is from then.

mostly i don’t see these musicians. many locals all over south east asia told me that these are cicadas. a few others gave other names. i never verified any further. i hear individuals and tribes, not really species. besides, there are all sorts of sonic individuals in these recordings, and i don’t think they care much about what we call them.

recorded in thailand, vietnam, indonesia and south africa, most of these are daytime sonic activities, one is nocturnal. all play in hot climates, frequently during the hottest time of day. two are desert inhabitants (kgalagadi), the others live in the humid heat of tropical rainforests.

i often wonder what goes on in these creatures when they’re playing. when they sing or stridulate, or whatever you want to call it, it’s vibration, it’s ongoing, repetitive. it’s being in the very immediate here and now. the common scientific explanation is “mating call” (another scientific favourite is “territorial call”). this may explain one of many reasons, but reasons apart from “functional” ones seem excluded.

i could imagine these singing ringing cicadas create trance states. like being high on life, ultimately immersed in the present moment and their immediate surroundings and celebrating it. maybe their sound creates altered states of consciousness also in other beings.

“un chien andalou” is a 1929 surrealist short and the first film by luis buñuel and salvador dalí. without a plot in the conventional sense, the film uses dream logic as a narrative, a free association presenting a series of tenuously related scenes. 

the institute for incoherent cinematography (IOIC) is a zürich-based association whose mission is to support silent movies as well as their setting to contemporary live music. 

in october 2021 the IOIC asked dave phillips to set music to “un chien andalou” as part of the 23rd edition of “videoex”, a zürich festival dedicated to experimental film and video creation in a cinematographic setting.

based on the "mutations" concept, this sleep concert uses slowed down field recordings.

slowed down field recordings play with time-space dimensions. related to the size of most of the creatures recorded, this game arises: ‘how would i hear insects if i were an insect?” this quickly expands to “how would i hear/perceive the world if i were an insect (amphibian, avian etc)?’.
time-space plays with relations and perceptions of size, speed, frequency, light, sound etc. imagine being an ant in a forest. or a beetle in a desert. or a fish in the ocean. or you in relation to the universe. and how that sounds.

these are starting points. just changing dimensions, suggesting different possible parameters.

perception changes through immersion - being part of something.

rave music broken down to vibrating walls and distant echos. and how would a culture dying sound?:
picture a club, an event of contemporary dance music. you’re outside the main room, in the toilet, in a corridor, upstairs, in the cellar, or maybe outside. sound comes through walls and round corners.
these are some of the ‘other rooms’.
other beings are in these rooms, playing, maybe interacting, coexisting. some other rooms inside that outside are you inside, and rooms inside you. how a body hears through other senses than the ear. the room between how something sounds and how it first feels, and then. the room between inner perception and outer reception.
some rooms are derelict. some remain closed. rooms morph. a third mind or third person objective looks at yourself from the outside. maybe observing your species from the outside. these are starting points. perception levels. game options.

NEW 2CD by dave phillips: should a seeker not find a companion who is better or equal, let him resolutely pursue a solitary course; there is no fellowship with the fool / cicada trance (released by no part of it)

dave phillips' trajectory as an experimental recording artist began in the mid-80s, with a punk background that expanded to wilder and more nuanced territories as a solo artist.

having utilized field recordings, both raw and arranged, for over 20 years, not to mention his well-established work with bombastic body sounds, surrealist strings, and tribal percussion, phillips has honed his use of source material in a way that comes off more as a soldier's sense of duty than anything resembling a hobby. with "should a seeker... / cicada trance", he returns with two badly needed physical issues of integral field recording-based pieces that were previously only available for digital download.

"should a seeker..." was initially published as a digital release on the radical matters label in 2008. it is a structured arrangement of sounds with reptilian, amphibian, and insectan origin, remastered for physical release in 2023. for over 56 minutes, gurgles, primal roars, and screams from creatures of the night swirl in and out of the stereo spectrum in complex, yet somewhat rhythmic patterns, for an almost hyperreal effect.

the main insect featured in "cicada trance" is the first one that drew me to another world, through its sound. i imagine these singing ringing cicadas create trance states. like being high on life, ultimately immersed in the present moment: immersion - to be part of something. 

recorded in thailand, vietnam, indonesia and south africa between 1994 and 2015.

cicada trance is dedicated to the most important beings on this planet: insects.

"disappear was born of something that ceased to be, suddenly, unexpectedly, painfully. like two mirrors that reflected too strongly and burst. the shards that were left tell a story. of a trance meeting of an insect and a flower in a self-made paradise and the resulting journey that took them towards new dimensions but was brutally cut short before these could be explored. the sun disappeared. the resulting daze looked back and saw... mirrors don’t reflect what we want to see.

disappear consists of 7 pieces composed alongside a presence. the story linking the pieces unfolds when the presence disappears and the 8th, last piece of the album appears, a cleansing lament disguised as an abomination. marnować means waste in polish. composed between january 2018 and november 2019, a period also known as the berlin daze. mastered by riccardo mazza. edition of 300. released by total black. dedicated to agata."
