Written as a poem by Hiram Cody in New Brunswick, the song  is the reminiscences of the old man who carved the figurehead for the schooner Marco Polo, launched in 1851 in nearby St John. The tune and the chorus were added by Dick Swain and the song came to prominence through the singing of John Roberts.  (Played on a 1920s Wheatstone Linota in C)
