Happy July! This month is something a little more orchestral, and a little more epic I'd say :). This piece is kind of broken into three parts. The beginning is upbeat and adventurous while the middle is a little slower and less energetic. Then a small pause, and the ending crashes in with a short piano bridge leading into an exciting ending! This was a fun song to work on and I enjoyed expanding my skills at the orchestral tools I have. Berlin Orchestra never lets me down and the Embertone instruments are always the most fun to use. Anyhoo, the Frontier is open for exploration!

Happy October! This month ushers in a new song that is both a little peaceful, but also upbeat and colorful. I rather enjoyed working with the acoustic guitars in the song as I picked up Native Instrument's Picked Nylon guitar to handle some of the melody while I got to use the Strummed Acoustic for the second time. They both worked like a charm and I have to say they're quite easy and fun to use.  Overall the song was a little hectic to put together but the end result, I think, is really fun and full of life. So sit back and enjoy Wildflower.

Wildflower

Happy August! This month was hectic to say the least, and I think some of that energy rubbed off onto this month's song. I wanted to try something a little more electronic in overall feel, and make a song with a driving beat and fun synthesizers. All this led to a piece that will hopefully energize you once you start listening.

I used audio balancing more than usual to send tracks towards one ear or the other, which hopefully gives a full sound with a bit of a good ear tickle when the instruments come and go. Most of the song is comprised of a couple of harmony synths and a heavy layering of drum beats with the lead synths covering most of the treble. And while there's some structure to the song, I mainly just wanted some cool synths over a driving beat so almost half the song ended up as kind of a solo as I was having too much fun playing over the backing beat.

This was also my first time experimenting with some of the Captain plugins. I had them sitting around for a long time and never tried them out, so I figured I should give them a go. They were actually pretty interesting to use. The Chords plugin helped me break away from my unconscious bias to use a certain chord progression I always go back to, and I had fun experimenting with the Melody plugin to help me figure out where I want to lead the song. Overall, they weren't heavily used, but they did bring something fresh to the table and I think I'll be trying them out again.

Anyhoo... I like what I ended up with and while I was listening back to the whole piece I kept thinking that this song kind of reminds me of music you might hear in a racing game. So going with that idea, I'm happy to present Starting Line!

Happy September! This month's song is just what the title says, it's simple. A simple groove with a simple structure coming together for a simple, fun time. This song is very much a "me" song in that the melody is not really existent and instead the versus and ending are basically just some soloing over my favorite, fallback scales. 

Sometimes writing a song with zero idea of what you want and 100% "let's just have fun and see where it goes" attitude can make for a fun time, but perhaps some questionable compositional cohesiveness. In the end though, it was fun to make so that's really what matters this time.

Simple Days

Happy October! It may be time for spooks and scares, but for me it's time for another song. This song is a little bit special. It marks my first song to have vocals in a long long time. I used vocaloid 3's IA for a few songs years ago, but now it's time for something new.

As I was writing this song, I was never happy with the melody instrumentation I had and I kept telling myself I could fix it as I continue working on the song. Spoiler alert, I never did. As I completed the song I listened back to the whole thing again and decided I just didn't like the instrumental. So... what to do?  I decided it would work better with a singer, but since I can't install my old copy of IA (via CD) I had to find something soon so I could release the song.

So here comes Natsuki Karin via Synthesizer V. I wanted to try this software before, and I must say, it really impressed me. The software runs pretty well and while it may not be as sophisticated as the vocaloid software, I found the sound bank for Karin to be incredibly well done right out of the box. Very little to no tweaking required to produce a good sounding voice. This, thankfully allowed me to write lyrics for a song originally without them in a... admittedly short amount of time as the 1st was literally a day away.

In any case, I ended up quite impressed and ended up making changes to the song to support the change to a singer. I once again learned how it's pretty cool that something you didn't like can change into something you do with just some quick thinking, easy to use tools, and a little extra love.

Itsumo Sagashiteru

Happy November! This month brings in a new song with Natsuki Karin once again on vocals. I've been having fun exploring the singing styles available and I want to keep trying to get the best sounding vocals out of the singer.

The track for this month is a bit of a mix, like most of my songs. This time it's a bit of pop with a small infusion of jazz. I wanted to break out the band horns and bright piano again but also add a little bit of a darker harmony with the doom drone and guitars to help offset the bright woodwinds and piano. This is also reflected a little bit in the melody and rhythm of the lyrics as the theme around the song is focused on the vice of gambling and always finding yourself in a casino.

Overall I think it's a fun piece with a little trouble getting started (I went through a lot iterations on the opening and still couldn't quite find the best way to tackle it), but finds it's legs after that and gives a strong beat with some fun highlights.

Happy December! It's the last month of the year and that means it's once again time to dig out that default jingle bell sound in Logic Pro. Happy New Year! It's finally 2023, or maybe it's already 2023... This past year seemed to fly by at an incredible pace, but now it's time to slow down and get ready for what the new year has in store for us. This month's song is looking forward to a new year that will likely be full of decisions and surprises. Once again featuring Natsuki Karin, I had a fun time mixing the backing track with the tone of Karin. I also brought out Electri6ity for the first time in a while to handle the lead guitar as I wanted to continue experimenting with more guitar in my music. Happy March! This month brings another song featuring a SythesizerV singer, and this time a completely English speaking one. I found Solaria had quite a powerful voice out of the box and I was hoping to write something that could complement that voice. 

In the end, I found myself with a mix pop-rock-ballad song. To be honest, I like how it turned out, but it certainly took a strange path to get there with various instruments flying in and out of the composition until I landed on a set that, I thought, worked well together. If I could change one thing, I would have liked to be a little more creative with the post guitar solo verse to give a little more variety to the piece, but overall I think it's structured well enough to feel complete.

Happy April, this month's running a little late, but the song is here and ready to fly. This song is a callback to one of my earlier songs - Take It Easy - a real blast from the past!  I really like the ending groove of that song and I wanted to bring it back in a different fashion. Happy May! This month returns to an instrumental track with something fun and full of energy. I went into this song looking for something energy and poppy and after a few twists I'm happy with the outcome. It's somewhat of a blend of electronic, jazz, swing... and something else, but I can say it was fun to make. Thanks to these themes I thought it would be appropriate to bring out a certain saxophone again, so get ready for something fun, and energetic!

It's been a hot minute as I've been busy with some other projects, but it's time for a little more music. I've held on to this track for a while as I didn't like the lyrics, but I figure what the heck~ 

This is an attempt at a rock opera type song. There's 2 singers going back and forth locked in the middle of a heated conversation. I wanted something fast paced and full of energy to follow with the song dialog. I kind of just throw you into the middle of what feels like a long running story, but this is all there is.

The Fight

Where to begin~ After hearing about the new Garage Band update on iOS, I realized I never tried it out. The only iOS device I have is my phone so ... I ended up creating a song entirely on my phone. 

While Garage Band on my phone is pretty cool and makes making music rather easy, I don't think it's quite the optimal interface for me, especially when I didn't have any peripherals I could plug-in to help. Touch screen keyboard on a 5C can only go so far ...

Also, I somehow managed to work my name into the song thanks to my friend happily volunteering a sample when I suddenly sprang on him that I needed a random sound that lasted for about 1 second. For some reason that random sound had to be my name?

(Also, yes, Glockenspiel is required!)

Somehow This Happened (Axel F Parody Cover)

Happy February! This month's song is a bit different from usual, in that it's a cover song. By request, this is a cover of Complication by ROOKiEZ is PUNK'D. You may also know this song as the second opening song for Durarara if you're familiar with anime.

Now this song posed quite a few challenges from the get go. It was quite a learning experience trying to recreate the fullness of this song, which is carried heavily by guitar and strong vocal talent. When I create cover songs, I tend to "orchestrify" the song, basically use more piano, strings, and other instruments I like. This can sometimes be a challenge though, when I have a song such as this, where I find it difficult to recreate the harmony of the guitar without using a guitar. In the end I think I sacrificed some of the fullness of the song, but retained the core feeling.

One of the things you may notice if you're familiar with the song, is how the second verse changed in the instrumental version. The second verse of the song is more or less a rap section where the singer speaks quite quickly. I feel like this did not work well in the instrumental version and I would not be able to recreate it in a good way. So in light of this, I changed the meolody in order to make the second verse not sound like a constant bombardment of sound.

The vocal version of this song does retain the rap section, however I quickly realized how complicated and difficult it is to rap with a vocaloid. I have nothing but respect for the singer since he is able to pronunciate clearly while speaking quite quickly. I feel the vocaloid version fell slightly flat here where it sounds far more rushed than the original making it harder to understand the words. In the end, I learned that I still have a far far way to go in working with vocaloids.

Anyhoo, It was a long, hard, but quite fun road to completion. So here's Complication, do enjoy and feel free to criticise.

Happy February! This month's song is a bit special as it's an exploration of some new tools. The Metropolis Ark packs 1 and 3, as well as the Berlin Orchestra Inspire pack 1. When I heard the sounds from the Metropolis packs I knew I wanted to try making a song that was more epic than what I usually do; something more akin to a soundtrack (which is why I gave it the Soundtrack genre tag). I also knew it had to use the epic choir it provided! So I experimented with the sounds in these packs and combined some of my favorite samples from each pack into one bombastic song. So here's something a bit different from usual, but also something I think turned out pretty cool!

Escape: Path Of The Cursed

Happy March! This month is something a little smoother; a little slower. This month is some lazy jazz with a little more upbeat ending. When starting this song I was playing around for a chord progression I could get behind, and when l landed on the initial chord progression you hear in the start of the song, I knew that it needed to be paired with an upright bass and a trumpet. Add in a drum kit with a good hi-hat and a saxophone and things really took shape. Naturally, I ended the song with a more upbeat section, but overall I think the song matches a lazy kind of jazz vibe that for some reason makes me think velvet.
