In an interview Larry Beckett said "‘Morning Glory’ is in part about time. The morning-glory is a flower that opens in the morning, and dies later that afternoon; its life is surprisingly brief, like a house that vanishes. The characters in the song could be said to represent Innocence, who is singing, and Experience, who is the Hobo. Innocence has had little time, and Experience much: “No more tales of time,” says the Hobo."

We got this song from the singing of the Incredible String Band as a "Carter Family song". Although it was recorded by the Carter Family back in the 1930s in fact the song is even older. It was written by an American songwriter from Kentucky with the wonderful name of William Shakespeare Hays (1837 –  1907). He wrote over 350 songs and sold over 20 million copies of his songs in sheet music form. This song was published in 1867 and dedicated to "Miss Emily Peters".

You've Been A Friend To Me

This is our version of a 17th Century Scottish ballad. According to Wikipedia "The original and extended ballad was the story of a young shepherdess who falls in love with a stranger on horseback, who rides by her pasture every day. The song became popular across Scotland and England towards the end of the reign of James Vl & I, and the earliest publication date found is 1651. The melody was also published as a dance tune, during the same year, in John Playford's first edition of The English Dancing Master.["
Cowdenknowes is a place in Scotland east of the River Leader, 32 miles southeast of Edinburgh in Berwickshire.
The song is sung by Steve Verge with harmonies from Dave Styles and two acoustic guitars.

A rare live recording of myself and Steve Verge singing "Bright Morning Stars", the Mike Heron version (Incredible String Band), recorded at Torquay Folk Club (in the Country House) in 1972. We used to sing there regularly and would always end the set with this song, and here we are introduced by host Martin Scragg and then joined in chorus by the whole club - particularly by Maggie Duffy (nee Seaward).

Singer-songwriter from Devon, UK. Member of the acoustic music duo Ziggurat. Started playing professionally at the same time and in the same places as Show Of Hands. At one time was a member of Daddy Longlegs with drummer Cliff Carrison.
