The Computational Beauty of Nature III is a reworking of part II in 5.1 surround for the Tin Sheds opening at Cootamundra Creative Arts & Cultural Centre 7-10-2011. In this piece there a sections of Aeolian tones mixed with very sparse rainfall on wires and a tennis court fence, and parts of the section of Chris Watsons field recordings: pistol shrimps and wind in grass. This is a stereo mix from the surround version.

'Between and Beyond' (Sarah Last &amp; David Burraston)
For our remix we wanted to investigate the construct of space in its broadest forms. We explored Daphne's work using our outdoor 'laboratory' of landscape scale long wire installations. These artworks provide a spatial sonification that is of our world, yet sounds rather other worldly. The natural complexity inherent in our instruments adds an organic dimension to Daphne's sounds.&nbsp;These instruments also reference supposedly obsolete, yet indispensable radio and telecommunications technologies. This reflects a similar conundrum to the instrument and technology that Daphne pioneered. In regional Australia fibre optic technology is still many years away, when deprived of such resources the value of preceding technologies and its pioneers are all the more pertinent.

Between and Beyond  (Sarah Last & David Burraston)

Acorn is a generative music composition that explores a small discrete cellular universe, using 2D multi state Cellular Automata (mp3 of the piece encoded at 96k is here -> Acorn). It is realised through a hybrid of mediums, analogue/digital synthesis and old/new computer technology. The algorithm was programmed in BBC BASIC on an (ancient) Acorn RISC machine. Events in the universe are mapped to synthetic speech events (allophones), tones and digital noise. Sound output is further processed by an analogue modular synthesizer (Roland System 100M & Doepfer A100). A partial view of the studio setup is shown in the image above.The final production and mixing was made by Australian electronic music legend Garry Bradbury (formerly of Severed Heads). During 2005 Acorn was premiered in concert at the Australasian Computer Music Conference in Brisbane, performed live later the same year at both the 3rd Iteration Conference in Melbourne and the Electrofringe Festival in Newcastle. In 2010 Acorn was featured on the peer reviewed DVD accompanying the Winter edition of the Computer Music Journal (MIT Press).

The WIRED Lab is an artists’ collective as much as it is a location. These initial investigations had foundations in field recording, site-specific installation, experimental audio and sound composition.
