By 1985, Billy Noknees had already dabbled in disco-metal, sword fights with imaginary monsters, and battles against ghosts—but nothing could prepare the world for his next musical obsession: BMX stunt riding. After watching a group of kids performing tricks at a skate park, Billy became convinced that BMX culture needed an official anthem—and he was the man to write it. Thus, BMX Warlord was born, a track that combined aggressive rock-infused disco beats with utterly nonsensical lyrics about cycling into battle.

The session, recorded with producer Chad “Airborne” Wheeler, got off to a disastrous start when Billy insisted on riding his newly purchased BMX directly into the studio. Attempting to make a grand entrance, he burst through the doors at full speed, promptly colliding with a microphone stand and crashing into the control desk, sending coffee flying over the mixing console. The engineers, unfazed by Billy’s antics at this point, simply wiped down the controls while Billy, dazed but unshaken, declared, “That’s how a Warlord arrives.”

Once recording began, Billy refused to sit down, instead performing his vocals while straddling the BMX, despite the fact that it was completely unnecessary. His lyrics painted an epic, over-the-top tale of a futuristic warrior riding his BMX into battle,

The backing track was impossible to tell if it was meant for a nightclub or an action movie montage. Billy, fully immersed in the character of the “BMX Warlord,” attempted to record backing vocals while riding in circles around the studio, resulting in several ruined takes due to his heavy breathing and occasional crashes.

Despite all of this, BMX Warlord was completed and pressed as a 12” single. However, it turned out that absolutely no one wanted a song about BMX warriors, and the track sold just two copies—one to Billy himself and one to an anonymous buyer in Belgium.

For decades, BMX Warlord remained one of OBIISSS’s most baffling, forgotten releases, until a single copy surfaced in 2015 in an old sports shop in Detroit, still wrapped in shrink film, priced at $1.99. Now, after extensive AI remastering, BMX Warlord is finally available once more—complete with its original artwork and all of Billy’s breathless energy intact.
