Disquiet Junto Project 0106: Sonar Vortex

Planning/Composing/Recording

- I used the temperatures from Orlando, Florida on 2014/1/10.
- Three arrays of temps were used: max, actual/projected, and mean.
- 24 temps in each array - one for each hour in the day.
- The Fahrenheit temps aligned with midi notes, so I wrote a program in ChucK to play the three arrays of notes. The mean temp (lowest notes) was taken down one octave.
- The notes were quite somber and that drove the decision on instruments.
- The tone of the piece led to the title. We hang our hats (plans) on the weather forecasts, yet like to forget it is always a probability and not a 100% guaranteed outcome. The fat tails on the bell curve do pop up once in a while (blind squirrel phenomenon).

- The other background sounds are granulizations of the ChucK track.
- The mixdown was done in Auria.

Project description:

This week’s project is about graphic notation. We’ll find the music inherent in weather patterns. The procedure is as follows:

Step 1: Go to the website WeatherSpark.com. Enter the city/town where you live.

Step 2: Find the weather for January 10, 2014. (Depending on when you do the project, this will either be a prediction or a matter of historical record.)

Step 3: This weather website has many viewing options, but the default is to just see the temperature, and you should only see the temperature for this project. The image should roughly resemble the one associated with this post (if not visible, see image at disquiet.com). The chart depicts the weather altering over the course of the day, and has it shown in various bands, with the actual/predicted temperature as a black line, and historical highs, lows, averages, and other data depicted in more subtle shades. For additional information about reading the weather chart, visit this URL: http://goo.gl/3fRGwW. Make a screenshot of the day’s weather chart of your area, and trim it to just show that one day. Be sure to associate that image with your track, so the listener can view it.

Step 4: Produce an original track in which the weather chart is read from left to right as a musical score. Perhaps you’ll assign a different instrument or tone to each band or line. Perhaps you’ll align pitches with temperatures. Perhaps you’ll set the pace based on the time of day.

Disquiet Junto Project 0108: Free Bassel

Planning/Composing/Recording
- The Roman Empire spanned a good part of the known world. The structures they built around the world were consistent in design, but the music of the local cultures - heard near those structures - could have been very diverse. While the Roman architecture was magnificent, I also imagine it as being somewhat cold, sterile, and full of echos and (reverb). The percussion in the piece was used to bring in that feel of the architecture and to give a structure much like the formal Roman architecture. The rest of the music was was meant to be somewhat otherworldly to represent all the different cultures the Romans spread into, in this case, specifically Palmyra.
- Since the intent was to create a soundscape for the 3D visualization, I wanted to keep the feel of the piece fairly consistent so as to complement the visual and not distract from it.
- For the main background sound, I wrote a program in ChucK which generated a granular synthesis of a short piece of synth sound. The sound in the middle section was a granular synthesis of the first sound.
- Mixdown was done on Auria.

Disquiet Junto Project 0110: WSB100

- My article came from the front-page of the Orlando Journal Sentinal. I used the online version to create my cut ups. It provided for more even length lines.

- I did not physically build my cut up, but cut and pasted into an e-mail (time constraints and my printer is hosed).
- The poor image for the piece shows the result.
- The background rhythm provide a somewhat surreal feel to the readings since the whole event itself was surreal.
- The use of the vibrating phone sound throughout was to give the feel of what the older gentlemen must have been going through in the movie theater.
- The chorus ala Gregorian chant (almost ala Greek Tragedy given my vocals) was meant to provide a somber feel to a story in which nobody wins. 
- I recorded the cut up with an iRig mic and an iPhone.
- Editing was done with Audacity.
- I prefer to do my mixing in Auria, but since this project was more about editing than sound design, I did the mixing in Audacity, too.

Step 1: Take the lead article from your local newspaper and write down the first 18 sentences on separate slips of paper — or, if you prefer, extract the first 18 lines on separate strips of paper.

Step 2: Label these pieces of text from 1 to 18.

Step 3: Either read them out loud or use text-to-speech and record them.

Step 4: Construct the vocal of a song using the material. Sequence the vocal in the following order. Note that text element 3 serves as the chorus and text element 15 serves as the bridge. The remaining elements are in random sets of four, with no repetition.

Add music, whatever instrumentation you choose, to flesh this out into a proper song.

Disquiet Junto Project 0126: NOLA Re-metered

- I'll admit I rolled three times to get a time signature I could deal with: 3/4.
- The piece is in 3/4 throughout except for the short parts from the intro and end of the original piece.
- My intention for the piece was to try and blend ambient with the old time jazz. 
- All sounds were created from the original piece except for the cymbal and two snare tracks.
- The opening and closing sections used a short piece of the static in the original. The opening also had a short clip of clarinet which had a drone plugin applied and then was pitch shifted a few times.
- A number of horn and clarinet parts were cut from the original and then pitch shifted to the appropriate notes.
- I applied the same reverb to all of the tracks - including the intro and end of the original. This seemed to bring the different sounds together a bit, and the recorded sounds a little more bright and full.
- The drone in the middle section was made by stretching the opening note of the recording with Audacity.
- Cutting and pitch shifting was done in both Audacity and Renoise. Mixdown was done in Renoise. 
- The three percussion tracks were made in Renoise and had some automated pan applied. Otherwise, I let the pan stay in the middle on everything else to align with the old mono parts.

This week’s project combines two familiar Disquiet Junto elements: shared source audio and a pair of dice. The goal is to rework an existing archival jazz track by adjusting it to a new meter. The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Download the song “Slow and Easy” by the Louisiana Five Jazz Orchestra from this URL:

Step 2: Roll two dice. Add 1 to the result of each rolled die. Thus, if you rolled a 4 and a 6, you would have a 5 and a 7. (Note: if both dice resulted in the same number, roll one of them again until you have two different numbers. And if you find your result just plain confusing, certainly feel free to roll until you find one you’re comfortable with.)

Step 3: The new meter of your project is the first die over the second. Thus, the result from step 2 would mean your new meter is 5/7.

Step 4: Rework a segment of the source track and in the process change the meter from the original to the meter that was determined in step 3. You may add additional audio, but some prominent aspect of the original source track should be evident in your final work.

Length: Your finished work should likely be between a two minutes and four minutes, but there’s no formal length requirement.

- I had been to my local branch of the Orange County FL library a couple of times since I moved here, but that was always to vote. I went around noon on Saturday. Most of the "noise" generated by the self check out terminals, so I used the opportunity to get a library card. I found four CDs and recorded my check out. On listen back I realized I could have been a little quieter with the CDS, but the recording still captures the ambience of the place.
- Personally, I think Brian Eno's Neroli would be the best music for the library. I would spend all of my time there.
- For my background music, I wanted to keep it simple and be something that would not distract people in the library, and also provide a positive ambience. Like meditation music, I felt it should not distract you from what you are doing, and provide a positive experience. I used the C major key. I made the piece in Renoise. I used two instruments from the Alchemy plugin for the background music. For the two minute piece I applied a little compression to the mix, because I needed some volume. No other effects were applied. I kept the volume of the music low to be in the background of the field recording, but it is probably a little louder than a real life situation.

This week explores the concept of silence. You will record one full minute of sound in the sort of place that is often associated with silence, or at least near silence: the library. By doing so, you will help support artist Zoè Benoit’s artwork called “bibliobeep,” which is a collection of library soundscapes from around the globe. Benoit is especially interested in the “beeps” that might occur in a library, so if possible follow this instruction:

“We are looking for one-minute recordings of background noises occurring at library checkout points and returns, including: electronic ‘beep’ sounds, sounds of books or other library media being handled, words exchanged, etc. To properly record a sound, position yourself near the offices where you can hear especially machine ‘beeps’ that incorporate the voices and sounds of library staff and the materials they handle.”

These are the steps:

Step 1: Record the sound of a library.

Step 2: Locate a continuous one-minute segment and upload it to the Numelyo “bibliobeep” project website:

Step 3 (optional): If you so desire, create a very quiet piece of music suitable for background listening. This piece should employ your library field recording as source material.

Disquiet Junto Project 0138: Video Sonic Void
The Assignment: Compose a 2.5-minute soundtrack to complement a work of silent video art.

Planning/Composing/Recording
- I wanted to create a piece which captured the slow rotation and the ambiguity of the rotating object.
- For the first part of this I used an iPad. All parts were recorded in Auria.
- The rhythm/percussive (slow rotation) was made with Sunrizer. I put on the Hold buttton and played seven notes. I duplicated the track to give it a fuller sound.
- The other six tracks were done with various other Sunrizer pads.
- Some reverb was applied to a couple tracks in Auria, but no other fx were used.
- I mixed down the tracks and put that into csGrain. I played the mixdown backwards at a slightly slower speed. This gave the pad with a sweeping white noise a grainier sound which I thought fit with the blurred nature of the video.
- I took the recording of that and put it in ReNoise for a final mixdown. Eventide UltraChannel was used for some EQ and compression. The sample was trimmed and then automated the fade out to fit the required length.

His original work is silent, and we’ll be adding music to it that complements the source material. Do note that the video is intended by the artist as a “Never Ending Loop.”

Disquiet Junto Project 0155: Mix Match
The Assignment: Take a track and its remix and meld them into something new.

- I tried to create something a little slower and stripped down. I like to experiment with tracks and sounds played together at different speeds and octaves so that was much of what I did here. It's interesting when sounds align to create their own rhythms.
- Track 1 and Track 2 were the keyboard and drum sounds in the first 50 seconds. I cut a couple pieces of Waiting 2 in ReNoise.
- Track 3 - Put Waiting in IRIS and essentially applied a bandpass filter to the enter piece. It plays from the beginning and through out. First forward, then backward, then forward.
- Track 4 - Comes in at about the 50 sec. point. Took the Waiting 2 piece and played it two octaves down, which also slowed it down. 
- Track 5 - Started at the same time as Track 4. This is the Waiting piece played down an octave and backwards.

Disquiet Junto Project 0166: Slow by Steps
Take a pre-existing track, slow it in descending states, and then add something to it.

Planning/Composing/Recording

- My intent was to use only the original recording to make this, to keep the feel of the overall 'old 78' feel.
- The slowed down violin started to take on a granular feel so I used that as a theme in the piece. The up/down and slow/fast of the violin and piano led me to the butterfly theme. 
- The segment I selected was 3.808 seconds long.
- The segment starts quiet and builds up so I selected a different pattern: AABAACAAD for the main track. Otherwise the final CD would have had a lot of quiet space.
- The main track is played in the middle pan. I put a Send on the track and applied a small amount of VahallaRoom reverb and offset it slightly to the right.
- I created a second segment - B2 - by reducing the speed instead of the tempo, which was then playing down an octave.
- The B2 segment was repeated 10 times to match the length of the main pattern. Track 2 was B2x10 played forward and track 3 was the same played in reverse. Both tracks were EQ'd to take out the piano and leave only the violin. This gave the up and down feeling of a couple of violins/butterflies (down an octave). Tracks 2 and 3 were panned far left and right respectively. 
- Tracks 2 and 3 were both sent to another sub with MMultiBandGranular and Pancake2. This gave a high fluttering swirling sound. This was faded in from the first B segment and reach full volume for about the final third of the piece.
- Mixed in ReNoise.
- On the master I EQ'd the top end a little (Waves LineEQ). My ears were starting to hurt from the shrill combination of a high violin on an old recording ;) Also, used Molot for a little compression.

Granular Butterflies [disquiet0166-slowbysteps]

This is the result of a little experimenting with Yellowfier on an iPad.

Pros:
- It has a unique layout for experimenting.
- The sounds that come with it are of good quality, but in general not the types of sounds I'm interested in.
- Supports Audiobus. I did not use it for this experiment.
- Decent options for exporting.
Cons
- Does not have Audio Paste. I really dislike using iTunes to go get my sounds. That would keep me from using this much at all.
- Cannot insert a measure. And, would be nice to be able to copy/cut/paste measures also.
- The ability to set the pan on notes would be good.

- Man those bells really keep going with that tune;) It started to have a 'for whom the bell tolls' feel to it, so I wanted to do something with a somber feel to it.
- Hence, 'Bells of regret'. My German is a bit rusty so if the title is grammatically incorrect, please correct me!
- The house was too full of people to record the piano, so I had to use a plugin. I'm not thrilled with the sound, so the plugin will remain nameless.
- I wanted to keep this simple so the original bells would still be heard throughout.
- Each piano phrase starts with the same three notes to mimic the bells.
- The field recording had EQ on it to take out most of the low end to cut down the street traffic and the bells were increased ~600kHz.
- Piano - TDR Tokelnikov, Valhalla Room, PanCake2 (for movement) and Valhalla Shimmer.
- The drone played in between the piano passages was the field recording run through Ambient_v.3. The second and fourth drones were played down one step.

My piece for Disquiet Junto Project 0202: Text-to-Speech-to-Free
Create an audiobook chapter from the new essay collection The Cost of Freedom.

Planning/Composing/Recording
- It was ironic I ended up with Ms. Coons' piece. Having worked in the financial industry for many years - a good part of it as a programmer - I could relate to her words. While not working in the free software domain, the pressures and transparancy with executives, shareholders, clients (too big to fail) and regulatory agencies is, if not similar, still significant and constant.
- The text to speech part had many hoops and hurdles - enough said. I did add a quarter note space between paragraphs. I wanted to slow down the voice a little, but the length of the piece was already running long.
- For the background, I wanted two elements. One to align with the modern/software topic of the story. A second to give a nod to Basel's plight. The general feel was to be somber to reflect the struggles in the piece and of Basel.
- For the first I used SoundScraper on an iPad. It had three drone type sounds, which I tweaked throughout the recording of it. Then moved it to the Mac and put it in Logic Pro X.
- For Basel's part, I used a bowed Cumbus in EXS24. I know the Cumbus is a Turkish instrument, so I hope no one is offended. For Basel, I used a Syrian pentatonic scale: C, C#, E, F, G#, and created two tracks of repeating patterns. At the end I added a Cmaj 5th to reflect the hope expressed at the end of Ms. Coon's piece and our hopes for Basel.

For the Disquiet Junto 0293 - Make music for Paige Dansinger’s Palmyra 3D/VR images, paying tribute to the late Bassel Khartabil.

- It was very sad to hear of Bassel's passing. This is my third Disquiet Junto piece for Bassel, so his story has become dear to me.
- I approached this in terms of "something being brought to life."
- The pulsing sound could represent the beginning of a life, or an idea, or a project, or anything.
- The 'shakiness' of the piece represents the fragility of any new thing coming into being.
- I used to Kontakt instruments from ZapZorn Solstice Blue and two Alchemy instruments.
- AudioThing's FilterJam was applied to all four tracks to create the shaky feel.

Make super slow music in 3/4 time.

- 3/4 time at 10bpm. The 16th notes really make it feel like 3 bars of 4/4. 
- The melody was most 1/4 notes with a few 1/8 notes. 
- The drums were sparse 16th notes. Some delay was added to provide some sort of flow. After all, it is a waltz;)
