The Traveler Album Overview

About half the songs on my latest album "The Traveler" were originally brought to Sound of Contact around the time of Dimensionaut in 2010. We jammed in the studio and recorded the music but I never finished the lyrics for them. Those songs that were almost on Dimensionaut like "Another Lifetime", "Ghostwritten Fables" and "For Granted" finally saw the light of day on my latest solo album. But, over the years I had also started recording studio covers of songs I wrote with SOC including this one called "Closer To You". It was one of the last songs added to the album and I felt that we needed a bit more of the romantic side of the story to balance the nerdy sci fi aspects of Dimensionaut. It occurred to me after hearing Peter Gabriel's cover of the Elbow song "Mirrorball" which did exactly that! My solo band version features Fernando Perdomo on guitar and bass, Derek Cintron on drums and Matt Dorsey of SOC joins me on the BVs. I also use some keyboards Tony Banks used in Genesis and, as a side note, I bought a bunch of his vintage keys from him when they closed their studio. 

Because The Traveler had songs that were originally done around the time of Dimensionaut I thought it would be nice to include a few of these SOC songs done with my solo group in the Deluxe 4 Disc (actually 6 disc now as I added two more to it) Box Set. These SOC covers are also included in my forthcoming 10-disc "Corners of the Mind" limited edition collection of solo and In Continuum CDs. So, anyway, here's a little teaser of it! Hope you like it. This song means a lot to me and I remember it came together rather quickly. I asked the guys to quickly record the music base of it and then I wrote the melody and lyrics in one evening in Vancouver while Matt was playing Wii Golf in the other room. I recorded a demo of it the next day in the studio because only Matt and I showed up that day. Then I presented it to Simon the next day and even though I already had over my quota of Squids tracks on the album we couldn't resist doing this ballad. I always thought it would have been a good song to release as a single. I guess we'll never know what would have happened if we did.

Here's another clip from my upcoming album "New World", although this one may end up being a bonus track for my Kickstarter campaign exclusively as opposed to a track on the regular release. Not sure yet. As usual this is a rough work in progress mix. This time I'm show cases the talents of Fernando Perdomo, a multi-instrumentalist who has contributed a ton of guitar and bass on this album. Here Fern, Nick D'Virgilio and I go wild in the middle section of a song called "The Way Out".

I do a Deluxe Edition of every album I produce. It offers a chance for the albums to recoup the high costs of making them while streaming services do the exact opposite in the music industry today. So, it's a way to support the artists directly. But, when I do these Deluxe Editions they offer something I've always wanted out of albums I like. Alternate versions, demos, outtakes and surround mixes of the songs. 

For my own favorite album collection of music I like, I always buy the Deluxe Editions if they're available because I'm picky and there aren't that many bands, artists and albums I really get into. So, when I do, I get the max I can out of it. Because of that, I do the same when I make an album. For the music lovers out there who can appreciate the differences between an album track and an alternate acoustic version such as what you hear in this snippet of the song "Too Far Gone". Recurring Dream

This is the original 2005 demo I had called "Sea Of Voices" that was later revised and recorded with SOC for the "Dimensionaut" album and retitled "Realm Of In-Organic Beings".

More song origins. This is an excerpt from my original demo called "Don't Leave Me Now" which I later co-wrote the lyrics and melodies with Simon Collins and Hannah Stobart for it to become "Beyond Illumination" on the album "Dimensionaut" by Sound of Contact. The story behind this piece is that I wrote it to present to Jon Anderson, formerly of Yes, with a suggestion of a possible collaboration similar to "Jon and Vangelis" which I've always loved. When I had the chance to play a show with Jon in 2005 he had said that he was looking for a keyboard player to collaborate with so that was my response. Jon said he thought it was a hit! (His exact words) But, we never ended up working on it. So, when I was in the studio in 2010 working on "Dimensionaut" with SOC I played this track for Simon and told him that I was planning on doing it with Jon Anderson. He said he really liked it and wanted to work on it with me instead. 

Once Simon and I had the lyrics written we thought it would be great to make it a duet with a female singer. We had many in mind ranging from Bjork to Melanie Gabriel (Peter Gabriel's daugher who I met years ago when I played with L. Shankar on the 1993 WOMAD festival). I had met Hannah Stobart, formerly of The Wishing Tree with Steve Rothery (Marillion), on Facebook and her voice seemed perfect for the song. So we asked her and her husband Paul Craddick if they would be willing to do it and record her parts to send to us. I actually sang a guide vocal for her (me singing the female part! haha) but she came up with her own unique melody and phrasing which we loved.

It's semi-acoustic or "half unplugged" with an emphasis on scaled down acoustic instruments at the forefront embellished with ambient electric instrument sounds with the absence of drums. This version is featured on the exclusive Kickstarter Box Set Bonus Disc and may appear on a forthcoming "Half Unplugged" compilation. 

It features guest vocalist Heather Findlay (formerly of Mostly Autumn) who Dave shares another project with called "Mantra Vega" and Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree.

This is one of the bonus tracks on the Dave Kerzner New World Live Extended Edition coming out this month. It's on the additional disc that has three new studio recordings plus a Pink Floyd song (Great Gig In The Sky featuring Durga McBroom, long time vocalist with Floyd) and a medley of Sound of Contact songs (songs I wrote with Simon Collins, Kelly Nordstrom and Matt Dorsey performed by my solo band in Holland earlier this year). On my European tour we sometimes played a cover of ELP's Lucky Man and I dedicated it to my late great friend and musical hero Keith Emerson. Sending you love wherever you are Keith! We decided to record our take on the song in the studio for fun and here it is. Hope you like it. We went heavier in the end section because that's how we feel about it. We miss him!

Chain Reaction

Here's the original demo for "Not Coming Down" with vocals by Gene Siegel. This is how the song sounded in 1998 when it was originally written. Later the song was worked on with Sound of Contact and released on the album "Dimensionaut". The song was originally written about my former Thud bandmate the late Kevin Gilbert and his shocking death in the late 90s. - Dave

This is a bonus track from In Continuum's Acceleration Theory Part Two. 

The idea of doing a “maniacal choir” for “The Battle Rages On” (Part 2 of Annihilation the song) came to me as I was singing in the shower. I realized that section reminded me of a song I used to play with Kevin Gilbert called “Shadow Self” which featured what Kevin called “The Vikings” who, at the end of the song, could be heard a capella. So, this special “vocal only” mix of the song is a tip of the hat once again to my old friend Kevin Gilbert. Currently it's something only the backers who bought special pre-order bundles get, however, some of these bonus tracks will be made available on my Sonic Elements Bandcamp page.

He is best known for his debut solo album New World and for co-creating the award-winning album Dimensionaut with Sound of Contact as well as being the head of the popular music software and sound development company Sonic Reality. Another music project of Dave's is "Sonic Elements' which combines the sounds of Sonic Reality that feature artists like Neil Peart of Rush or Nick Mason of Pink Floyd combined with special guests like Billy Sherwood (Yes), Keith Emerson, members of bands like Porcupine Tree, SOC and more.
