spàin-mhìlsein - dessert spoon: Gonadh, chan eil spàinean-mìlsein gu leòr agam. | Darn, I don’t have enough dessert spoons. 

truinnsear – plate: A bheil gu leòr air an truinnsear agad? | Do you have enough on your plate? 

cupa – cup: Is fìor thoil leam am pàtran stiallach air na cupannan sin. | I really like the striped pattern on those cups. 

sàsar – saucer: Tha mi a’ smaoineachadh gu bheil e snog na seann chleachdaidhean a chumail suas le sàsar a bhith air a’ bhòrd. | I think it’s nice to uphold the old customs by having a saucer on the table.

No, an do dh’fhàs thu seachd searbh sgìth dhiubh às dèidh trì làithean? Gun teagamh sam bith, chan eil e an-còmhnaidh furasta do spionnadh a chumail suas tro na h-oidhcheannan fada. Mar sin, bha sinn a’ smaoineachadh gur e deagh bheachd a bhiodh ann sùil a thoirt air comhairle a chuidich sinn le bhith a’ cumail oirnn – no a’ tòiseachadh a-rithist!

It’s more than building ships it’s their every working day
They stand there on the dockside and they watch them sail away
There’s someone in the government who wants to make their name

From a conversation about reopening Scotland’s shipyards with my Dad. He was a marine engineer and occasional builder of ships. It became clear to me that without a long plan, agreed on by all political parties, we’ll never see industry like that in Glasgow again.
