Short Attention Mix 024 by Specter

The latest instalment of the series is the second one coming from the Netherlands, this time in the form of a roughly 100 minute journey through Kwaito music by Dutch master digger and Youtube channel curator Biko (tag him for ID requests, comments and the like @sint-bikolaas ). There's nothing like being sent into a trance during a DJ set. Head down, eyes closed, no signs of making any bee line for the toilet or the bar, and suddenly hours have passed... That's the effect Stevie Cox has when she's playing.

Originally hailing from Manchester, Stevie has now found herself settled in Glasgow where she's been making a real impact over the last few years. A regular at Sub Club, one of the UK's most heralded clubs, you'll find her propping up the booth alongside fellow residents Harri & Dom and Telford. Last month she was made an official resident and a permanent fixture at the club's Saturday night party Subculture, and for good reason, Stevie's ability to have the crowd hanging on her every move is second to none.

Moving into production was the natural next step for Stevie. Her first official outing sees her team up with London-based producer Fossil Archive, alongside Kiara Scuro's ZaaZaa, for a four-track EP on Hammer's Remmah imprint, plus we hear there's plenty more collabs and her first solo release on the horizon too... 

As you may have gathered, when it comes to hypnotising listeners this isn't Stevie's first rodeo. Over an effortlessly fluid hour of acid, house, techno and garage she shows us exactly why she's a regular fixture at the revered Glasgow institution...

DJ since the late 1990s, she has made a name for herself through her activism on behalf of electronic music in the South of France. Passionate about vinyl, she plays exclusively on this medium. In the mid-2000s, she was part of the Soulbag Crew adventure with the Nîmes DJ collective and vinyl boutique Soulbag Records. She also joined Radio Raje to present the DeepHouse and underground Techno show “Deep'In Rhythm” with Seb Samoo. As guest on Léa Lisa's show “Noboundaries” on Universal Rhythms UK, on the Youtube channel Mon Bon Sillon, and more recently on twitch with Cosmo Pat's “The French Quarter” or with Ten Figerz for Djoon Radio, she regularly plays live, as on her Twitch channel entitled “Voyage sur la Lune”. Nathan Gregory Wilkins and Richard X aka Cowboy Rhythmbox have created their own lane within house and techno. The latest signing to Phantasy Sound (who have released music from the likes of Erol Alkan, Daniel Avery and Conan Mockasin to name a few) make deep, arpeggiated, trance inducing beats that we cant get enough of. They really caught our attention with their single Shake and with the release of their latest We Got The Box EP, Nathan (who also produces show music for Marc By Marc Jacobs, Giles and Sibling amongst others) has mixed a selection of music that has inspired the singular Cowboy Rhythmbox sound. A sound they describe as drawing on a collective love of outsider house, bargain bin cut-outs, hard drive debris, rudimentary jack trax, obscure TV themes, Euro disco, EBM, Detroit Techno, the Smith & Wesson Model 3 and horses.

Invisible City Editions is a cult reissue label based in Toronto, Canada. Run by Brandon Hocura and Gary Abugan, it puts out long overlooked or lost gems, much needed reissues and rare disco delights that immediately get snapped up by record collectors around the world. The men behind it are obviously avid diggers themselves, and really know how to pull out amazing records from many different genres. As such they also make for an amazing DJ team who surprise and shock, delight and entertain whenever they play. 

The sun scorched mix they have put together for us proves that: it is a truly worldly selection that marries off kilter funk with organic hand drums, afro futurism with house music’s sense of groove. Despite touching on so many diverse and hard to describe styles and left of centre melodies, it is all expertly tied together and perfectly sequenced so as to make for a truly different and distinctive ride.

Quentin Vandewalle is probably better known to you as Zaltan. The French DJ is head of the Antinote label; a homebase for many upcoming artists such as Syracuse (catch them on this year’s Lente Kabinet), D.K, Dominique Dumont and Geena. It is the place where horizontal ambient, gently Balearic sounds and nostalgic house all rub up with retro design attached to it. Each EP and LP is a lovingly crafted and memorable affair that will sooth any busy brain or tired soul, and that is the case with his journeying mix for Dekmantel. 

Over the course of an hour, it will ensure you to forget your woes and drift to a sunnier place before getting down to some dancing action. Vocal ditties, dusty breakbeats and crunchy DIY beats get blended and fused into a set that is expertly slow to start, then decidedly direct later on. Listen and learn from a master of balancing beats with blissfulness.

There is no one quite like San Proper. The Dutchman is a rare and real character in a scene that is all too often devoid of genuine personality. It shows in the wild music he makes, the wonderful Red Light Radio shows he hosts and the often weird sets he serves up at clubs and festivals round the world. Releasing most often on Rush Hour but also on Dopeness Galore and Perlon, he can do dark minimal as well as big hearted soul and can lay down a big guitar riff or program an off kilter drum line all with equal élan. 

His Dekmantel podcast finds the Dr. dig deep into his vinyl collection and serve up 23 slabs of soul, funk and afro magic across two hours that feel very personal. Traversing scenes, styles and tempos with flawless mixing and blending, he tells a very colour tale that breaks all the rules of a usual mix yet still makes complete sense. It is the sound of a selector who has open ears and who, ten years since his first release, is as thrilling and unpredictable as ever.

Originally hailing from London's East End, DJ Spectrum's collision with forward thinking music happened back in the early 80's. Exposed to the original pioneering sounds of electro & Hip-Hop from artists like Tangerine Dream, Front 242 & Afrika, Bambaataa Grandmaster Flash, Man Parrish, DJ Spectrum soon acquired a taste for quality avant-garde music.

In the mid 80's Spectrum's Anglo-French heritage made him eligible for National Service in France, and so began his steady importation of English music culture to the French Riviera, organising some of the earliest 'Raves' and 'Warehouse parties' in the country. 

In 1991 he joined forces with some of London's hottest underground organisers and changed the face of clubbing on Frances south coast for good by importing DJ's and equipment the likes of which had never been seen there before. 

For the first of his infamous 'Power-House' parties DJ Spectrum shrewdly chose to teamed up with young London DJ/Producer 'Tom Parris'. Once again this collaboration was to spark a revolution in the area and lead to some of the most innovating events the country has ever seen. 

Together Spectrum & Parris were to introduce some of the Uk's finest DJ's to France. Mr. C, Layo & Bushwacka, Nathan Coles, Murf, Baby Ford and even current Fabric resident Terry Francis all made guest appearances for the duo long before they became house hold names in the Hexagonal.
DJ Spectrum isn't just a Disc-Jockey. He was also one of the key investors in legendary London Super-Club The End http://www.endclub.com/ , and also the label boss of 'Cydonia Records'. Today DJ Spectrum holds down regular residencies on the Riviera and beyond, and has built up a following for his Deep-House mixes on Sound Cloud that would put many higher profile DJ's to shame. He also has a resident slot on Cocoon FM Radio along side Colin Dale, Tom Parris, Trevor Rockcliffe and Billy Nasty.
