Elegy ... Pilgrimage - St Mary le Bow, 6 October 2016

Lunchtime recital at St Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside, London, Thursday 12 April 2018. Built around the first performance of Duncan Fraser's fine new piece Flow, based on Dowland's Lachrimae (a new transcription of which serves as a prelude here), with a Duarte work which I've had in my collection since I was a teenager but never before programmed, and closing with Graham Fitkin's 2001 post-minimalist masterpiece, Skirting.

Guitar is a 2016 copy by Rohan Lowe of the 1940 Hauser I instrument played for many years by Julian Bream. Recorded via 2xRøde NT5 condenser mics, via an Alesis IO Dock into an (old) iPad.

I'm inordinately proud to have been the instigator and dedicatee of Bayan Northcott's fine Fantasia, one of the highlights of the 20th-century repertoire for guitar. This is a live recording of the work's second performance, in November 1982, in Oxford. The work has been played and recorded by several other guitarists, notably David Starobin, Jonathan Leathwood, and Antonis Hatzinikolaou, and is published by Stainer and Bell (http://www.stainer.co.uk/bayan.html)

Two masterpieces by Mexican composer Manuel Maria Ponce. The sunny and festive Sonatina Meridional, followed by the piece that its dedicatee Andres Segovia called “the Old Testament of the Guitar” — the monumental Variations and Fugue on Folia de España.

As an added bonus, the lovely Sarabande from the pastiche suite that Ponce composed for Segovia, who insisted on programming it by Sylvius Leopold Weiss mor years after the secret was out...

Arranged David Harvey, based on the Folger MSS version of this familiar piece, but transposed up into the key which Dowland uses for the song based on the pavan, Flow my Tears.

John Dowland - Lachrimae Pavan

Charming suite by one of the major (if frequently combative) figures in the British guitar world in the second half of the twentieth century. Written in the early 1960s as a wedding present for Andrès Segovia, it channels the folk song idioms of composers such as Holst and Vaughan Williams.
