SIR HENRYS 14 YEARS OF DANCE LIVE

For a while I’ve been interested in creating a series of mixes that capture the sound of classic nightclubs, where the roots of dance culture emanated. Not just great clubs, but genuinely influential clubs – where the spark of music, sound system, dj’s and community fuelled an explosion that created a new movement, a new lexicon. Where us interested parties can find our roots. Not just ‘best of’ mixes either – something that represents what a ‘snapshot of time’ from one of those nights might have sounded like.

The first one for me had to be the Hacienda. I’ve been interested in the Hacienda since I was about 14 or 15 years old and picked up on threads of information about what was going on in Manchester, a city far away from my home in Adelaide. That embryonic interest, and an ongoing affinity for music from the North West of England finally drove me to live in Manchester between 2002 and 2006. The Hacienda was gone by then, replaced by a block of apartments but it’s legacy lives on in clubs like Sankeys Soap via the Tribal Gathering team in Manchester, the Masque Theatre in Liverpool etc. – so I got to know those clubs. I got to know them very well. It was such a very positive and joyous time and I made lifelong friends in the middle of those dancefloors in the process. I can only imagine that at it’s best, the Hacienda was like that. I understand that in its latter years it was very much not like that, but I’m happy to ignore that.

My interest lies in the period from when the club opened in 1982 to approximately 1990/1991. Based on some research, including literature and some live recordings I believe that this mix is representative of what you would have heard played by Mike Pickering and Graeme Park at their ‘Nude’ night in 1989. I’ll do some mixes based on earlier years another time. The early 80’s was all about electro and disco. The era around 1987 was characterised by the rough magic of early house and techno from the USA. This one represents the beginning of rave. In order to cater for the drugged up crowd that wasn’t ready to go home when the club closed, after parties started springing up in warehouses around Manchester. One regular party was even held in two council flats in Hulme that had been joined by knocking holes in the dividing wall! It was called ‘The Kitchen’. That ‘home grown’ attitude really kicked off the underground rave scene that spread around the world like wildfire.

Apart from the music, what was it like to be there? The best quote that I have heard is from DJ Mike Pickering who said that it was like scoring the winning goal in the world cup – all night.
