The title comes from the masterpiece of classic Japanese literature "The pillow book". The book is a collection of diary notes, nature sights (and) unique psychological studies. The author, Sei Shōnagon a court lady. The tagh is an ancient Armenian form of poetry which has been also sung in churches (after mass). The word "tagh" could be identified with the word "song". This is unique tribute to Japanese culture and a unique crossroad. My this composition for some reasons reminded me of the aforementioned book as well as of our ancient taghs/songs: "The Pillow Tagh"/«Բարձի տաղ», a song that is always near your pillow (like a book). This composition was ordered by the Oktoplus ensemble of the famous NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Composer and pianist David Balasanyan was born in 1983 in Yerevan. He graduated from Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in 2005, Department of Composition (with Professor Ashot Zohrabyan) and completed his post graduate studies in 2008. In 2009-2013 he worked as an assistant at the same department. David Balasanyan has been a member of the Armenian Union of Composers since 2006. He is an author of chamber, piano, vocal, choral and orchestral works which have been performed in Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Russia, Switzerland, and the USA. Some of Balasanyan’s compositions were published by Swiss ‘’Sordino’’ and Japanese ՛՛Da Vinci Edition՛՛ musical publishing houses. His ‘’The Pillow Тagh’’ composition was performed in Hannover in 2014 which was specially written for the ‘’Octoplus’’ Ensemble, commissioned by NDR Radiophilharmonie. Balasanyan has been a member of the Contemporary Sound Orchestra Ensemble since 2017. He is a laureate of a number of national and international competitions: 3rd Prize at The 6th Sichuan Conservatory of Music Students Compositions Competition (2010, China), Naregatsi Young Composers Award (2006, Armenia), 2nd Prize at Benjamin Britten Competition (2003, Armenia), 1st prize at Competition for piano free improvisation at Naregatsi Art Institute (2016, Armenia/Yerevan) and three prizes in the piano composition competition Fidelio Online in Madrid: Second Prize, jazz category; Third Prize, contemporary atonal category (both 2019) and First Prize, Minimalist-Experimental-New Age category (2021).  He was invited to represent Armenia at the European Composers Congress in Vienna in 2006. David Balasanyan participated in the Youth Cultural Forum of the CIS member states in 2018 in Tula, Russia. David Balasanyan was also a member/vocalist of different choruses: ‘’Vardanank’’, ‘’Armenian Chamber Voices’’, ‘’Hover’’. Being also engaged in jazz performing, David Balasanyan especially prefers to present his own piano free improvisations in different styles (Jazz, Classical, Folk, Meditative, Minimalism). He cooperates with various musicians and uses a variety of electronic equipment. David Balasanyan is an author of several musicological articles, gives private piano lessons and has students who have been awarded prizes. Poetry is among his interests and many of his poems can be found in his book ‘’Arahetner’’ published in 2001.
