David Balasanyan (born in 1983 Yerevan, Armenia) studied composition and piano with Ashot Ghazaryan at a music school at ''Mkhitar Sebastatsi'' educational centers in Yerevan, from 1991-98, from 1998-2000 he studied composition with Ashot Ghazaryan and piano with Avetik Pivazyan at the Romanos Melikyan Music College in Yerevan. He graduated from Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas in 2005, Dpt. of composition (Professor Ashot Zohrabyan) and completed his post graduate studies in 2008. From 2009 up to 2013 worked as an assistant at the chair of composition of Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. 
From 2006 he is a member of Armenian Union of Composers. 
He is author of chamber, piano, vocal, choral and orchestral works. His works have been performed in Armenia, Germany, Italy, Russia, Georgia, Brazil, Lebanon, USA, Greece and some of them are published by Swiss musical publishing house ''Sordino''. 
In 2014 in Hannover was performed ''The Pillow Tagh'' (the pillow song) which was written specially for Ensemble Octoplus, NDR Radiophilharmonie (commision). 
Among his honors are: 
2nd Prize at BENJAMIN BRITTEN COMPETITION dedicated to the 90th Anniversary of the composer (2003, Yerevan, Armenia) for his ''Composition'' for woodwind quintet;
''NAREGATSI YOUNG COMPOSERS AWARD'' (2006, Yerevan, Armenia) for ''Postlude in memoriam...'' for violin and piano; 
3rd Prize at ''THE 6th SICHUAN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC STUDENTS COMPOSITION COMPETITION'' (2010, Chengdu, China) for ''Flower Garden In The Dark'' for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano. 
In 2006 he participated in the European Composers Congress  in Vienna as a representative of Armenia.
Being also engaged in jazz performing, D. Balasanyan especially prefer to present his own jazz piano improvisations. 
He also was a member/vocalist of different choruses: ''Vardanank'', ''Armenian Chamber Voices'' and ''Hover''.
D. Balasanyan is the author of several musicological articles. 
Among his other interests is poetry; he writes poems, many of them can be found in his book ''Arahetner'' (''Paths'', ''Mitk'' pub.) published in 2001, Yerevan.

David Balasanyan - WANDERING, piano free improvisation (2015)

David Balasanyan: In this piece, which I entitled "Monument", I'm citing Komitas ("Hov arek", "Es gisher, lusnyak gisher", "Antuni"). Besides the piano, there's a pre-recorded audio recording in which I sing Komitas with slight variations; the rest of the stuff is mine. The recording wasn't processed: you can hear echoes of footsteps, as well as some other environmental noise, to me which resemble a singing "Monument" and footsteps around it.

Composer and pianist David Balasanyan was born in 1983 in Yerevan. He graduated from Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in 2005, Department of Composition (with Professor Ashot Zohrabyan) and completed his post graduate studies in 2008. In 2009-2013 he worked as an assistant at the same department. David Balasanyan has been a member of the Armenian Union of Composers since 2006. He is an author of chamber, piano, vocal, choral and orchestral works which have been performed in Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Russia, Switzerland, and the USA. Some of Balasanyan’s compositions were published by Swiss ‘’Sordino’’ and Japanese ՛՛Da Vinci Edition՛՛ musical publishing houses. His ‘’The Pillow Тagh’’ composition was performed in Hannover in 2014 which was specially written for the ‘’Octoplus’’ Ensemble, commissioned by NDR Radiophilharmonie. Balasanyan has been a member of the Contemporary Sound Orchestra Ensemble since 2017. He is a laureate of a number of national and international competitions: 3rd Prize at The 6th Sichuan Conservatory of Music Students Compositions Competition (2010, China), Naregatsi Young Composers Award (2006, Armenia), 2nd Prize at Benjamin Britten Competition (2003, Armenia), 1st prize at Competition for piano free improvisation at Naregatsi Art Institute (2016, Armenia/Yerevan) and three prizes in the piano composition competition Fidelio Online in Madrid: Second Prize, jazz category; Third Prize, contemporary atonal category (both 2019) and First Prize, Minimalist-Experimental-New Age category (2021).  He was invited to represent Armenia at the European Composers Congress in Vienna in 2006. David Balasanyan participated in the Youth Cultural Forum of the CIS member states in 2018 in Tula, Russia. David Balasanyan was also a member/vocalist of different choruses: ‘’Vardanank’’, ‘’Armenian Chamber Voices’’, ‘’Hover’’. Being also engaged in jazz performing, David Balasanyan especially prefers to present his own piano free improvisations in different styles (Jazz, Classical, Folk, Meditative, Minimalism). He cooperates with various musicians and uses a variety of electronic equipment. David Balasanyan is an author of several musicological articles, gives private piano lessons and has students who have been awarded prizes. Poetry is among his interests and many of his poems can be found in his book ‘’Arahetner’’ published in 2001.
