Show Notes Episode 260: Next Time Try Roland The Thompson Gunner

This week Host Dave Bledsoe recalls the time he tried to be a Merc, only to discover he was just drinking with a guy who REALLY liked Deadpool. (Despite what he tells you, it WASN’T Ryan Reynolds)  On the show this week we tell you a little story about a retired Army Sergeant First Class’ dream to do the one thing they would never let him do in the Army:  actually overthrow a government.  (Turns out there are reasons why they don’t let Sergeants do that) 

Along the way we learn about Operation Gideon, which would’ve worked out better for everyone if it was about putting Bibles in hotel rooms.  Drawing extensively from an Associated Press news story about a failed coup in Venezuela that came out BEFORE the actual coup even started!  (And yet, they tried it anyway!)  We will meet a cast of amazingly bumbling characters, including close associates of the President all of whom wanted one thing and one thing only: for the President to LIKE them!  (Turns out, there are some things too stupid even for the Trump administration.  Maybe)  We follow them through a year of bad planning and bungled implementation all the way to their stunning yet utterly predictable failure to overthrow the government of a sovereign nation.  (Cue Yakety Sax)  Then we gently suggest how perhaps plotting coups in general, even if you aren’t totally unqualified MIGHT not be something one should do.

This week Host Dave Bledsoe trudges up the Slope of Enlightenment only to find himself lost in the forest of Drunken Stupor.  (Again) On the show this week, we examine what  makes Americans so susceptible to nonsense theories and phony experts.  (Turns out it isn’t ENTIRELY Facebook’s fault.)

Along the way we meet the two dudes who discovered why we are all dumb in the pretty much the same way.  (Of course, they could be stuck on Mt. Stupid, who knows?)  We dip our toes in the cold, deep water of dumb that is the Plandemic video and then quickly towel off with the warm fluffy towel of Q-Anon!  (Fresh from the dryer, like you love!)  Then we ask a series of hard hitting questions about the future of America in a serious tone of voice designed to make us sound both logical and appealing.  (Like the kind of voice you would buy insurance from!) Then we come crashing back to Earth by telling you that we told you so.

This week Host Dave Bledsoe discovers wearing a mask actually IS quite comfortable and is sure everyone will be wearing them in the future.  On the show this week, we examine the latest in our ongoing series of Dumb Culture Wars:  Masks.  (We can’t believe this is even a thing!)

Along the way we explore America’s long history of resenting people trying to save our lives starting with the Great Seatbelt Wars of the 1980’s.  (We have a LONG history of being really dumb.)  Then we dive right into the controversy with a small number of very noisy Americans refusal to wear a mask.  (It is exactly the people you think it is.)  We look at the various and specious “reasons” why people refuse to wear one, from religious to terror of people discovering how small and insignificant their penis actually is. (Thimble Dick is perhaps one of the most cutting pet names for the POTUS we’ve used to date!)  We then give a full and fair hearing to those Americans who feel wearing a mask infringes on their Constitution Right to be assholes before telling them to sit down and shut the hell up.  (Which is the actual court precedent for ALL arguments along these lines.)

This week Host Dave Bledsoe descends into his bunker for everyone’s safety, the bunker being his private bathroom far, far from everyone else. (There is not enough Lysol in the WORLD!)  On the show this week we talk about Shitty Caesar wading across the Rubicon wearing rubber ducky floaters.

Along the way we go back to the 90’s where we discover Dave was not NEARLY the badass he thought he was.  (Or is!)  Then we bring back an OLD favorite and climb aboard The Wayback Machine to learn why the Founders decided a military dictatorship was a BAD idea!  (Also, we take some cheap shots at Bostonians!)  We then head over law school to find out why Shroom Dick can’t just deploy the troops to “dominate” the protesters that frighten him so much.  (BUNKER BITCH!)  We visit Kent State to remind you all why soldiers are not cops and never should be.  Then we wrap up with some truly astonishing statements by Generals past and present.  (We honestly couldn’t believe our eyes when we read them!)

Episode 264 "Citizen Soldier"

Hello Podfriends!  I come to you with  GOOD NEWS!  After five years with Fast Eddie’s Podcast Hut Podcast Network What the HELL Were You Thinking will be moving on up!  Starting July 1st Gavin, the Fictional Minions and myself will be podcasting on the Seltzer Kings podcast network.  For you, not much, but for US...well we get to move OUT of our trailer at Fast Eddie’s Reliable Used Cars and into a REAL studio with foam padding on the walls and not 1983 Beaver Hunt centerfolds.  So long Miss August, I will miss that hairy monstrosity!  

Let me tell you a little about Seltzer Kings, which is a brand new podcast network just launching out of Brooklyn New York.  The folks behind it are Jeremy Balon, the on-air producer and co-creator of "The Adventures of Danny & Mike" podcast. Danny Tambereli you may know him as “Little Pete” from Nickelodeon Pete and Pete, and Mike Maronna who was none other than BIG Pete.  They’ve already produced several hit podcasts like The Adventures of Danny and Mike on the Last Podcast Network, the Bradshaw Boys and Fresh Beef.  Seltzer Kings Network is looking to lift up folks working in podcasting who lack the resources and connections to break out in the competitive market though they’ve been busting their ass producing content people SHOULD be hearing.

This week Host Dave Bledsoe explains how his life coach has always been Jimmy McNulty from The Wire.  (Yeah, we can see it.)  On the show this week we tackle the idea of a world without police.  (Imagine that!)

Along the way we learn how Dave wandered into his early life career as a cop.  (The same way he wanders into a dive bar, apathy and laziness.) Later we learn how he wandered right back out of the job.  (Ironically, it was the same way he LEAVES  a dive bar, by being thrown out!) Along the way we learn about one of the Bad Daves in the world who “trains” cops to treat citizens like insurgents.  Then we examine in detail what people mean when they say “Defund the Police” only to learn it isn’t the scary idea the cops want you to think it is.  (Kinda like how Black people are not scary like the cops say they are!) Then we offer some actionable ways to implement real change in the police without scaring all the white folks with “crazy ideas”.  (Which will make young progressive call us names because the ideas aren’t crazy enough.)

Host Dave Bledsoe takes a weekly look at politics, pop culture, the media, the contents of his friend’s liquor cabinets, or anything that manages to pique his interests.  Dave blends his distinctly left of center political world view with profound nostalgia for a lost childhood, disgust with hypocrisy and abiding love of Irish Whiskey (Jameson, we don’t do Protestant whiskey on this podcast) into a show which should appeal to the distinct palette of angry liberals, cynical Gen Xers and Millennials bent on ironically mingling 80’s music and modern politics.  (See—I told you we have generational appeal!)  The What the HELL Were You Thinking Podcast will have you asking the tough questions, or least what Dave’s deal with old televisions shows is all about.  Honestly, he’s probably on the spectrum with this kind of behavior.
