Title: PentaROCK

This is the fourteenth sound created in the Music Monday Challenge. This was a last minute idea I had when fooling around the keyboard, when I immediately decided that I should record it. Making it a sound was only decided after I realized the work I put into it already. This is something I would have written for a three-piece band or NeonBlack. The beginning snare hits were at first used as an metronome, but then kept in the final production in order to define this piece as rock. This piece also does not use tonic triads, but rather follows Eb minor pentatonic scale sequentially (the same scale Sound 12 uses). This sound was originally meant to have more instruments overlayed, but after hours of trying new instruments, there was no instrument that could be added that would add anything necessary without taking away from the sound as it stands now. Another limitation of the MIDI input is that I am convinced that it is impossible to embody all of the guitar's abilities and sounds in a MIDI style. Maybe one day it will be possible (maybe one day I'll be able to do it), but until then we have to look forward to keeping the quality of guitar sound alive through live recording.

Sound 14 (12-09-13)

This sound was part of my final project in 10th Grade Chemistry, but the audio file actually is part of another track that I composed entitled "Brothers Rap". This idea started as a challenge from one of my classmates, jokingly wishing we could have a song with my computer's automated speech voice, Microsoft Sam. I found out that it could be done, and so I wrote a piece around that. I also added my voice, which is obviously effected on purpose. Hopefully, I will finally be able to finish my project with the instrumental track with the original lyrics to "Brothers Rap", but until then this is another file that has that instrumental track.

Microsoft Sam Lays Down Some Rhymes Bout Thermochemistry

This is my favorite project from 57-171: Intro to Music Technology. I have always liked this chord progression with the chorus riff, but I never knew how to build it all together. The rhythmic lines in the synthesizers and piano called for me to use MIDI instruments for this sound. The drum was automated through a drum machine, using almost 32 patterns for grooves and many fills as well. The four synthesizers are all created from scratch, each serving a different function in the piece. The standard square lead plays the melody line consistently, and had to mixed so precisely that it's presence is well-established, but also can be thrown to background if need be. The bass synth has a rhythm different from any other instrument, almost to compensate for any missed rhythms in the other instruments. The bass synth also has a panning filter on it, giving the visual effect of a bass wave bouncing in front of the listener's eyes, back and forth. The other two synthesizers are pad-like, but one is more aggressive while the other sounds better in more rhythmic sections, all by design. You can hear the aggressive synth best at the last chorus, with what I recall as a 90s boy band rhythm with flutes. The rhythmic pad actually only plays whole notes until the end with running triplets. The most difficult about mixing these instruments so that at the end, you can hear each individual part stick out with different rhythms and registers, but all blend each other if the listener lets the piece play without so much discernment. This project started from a little riff to a masterpiece so quickly that I truly felt the music take control of the composition, which worked out all for the better

Their Eyes Were Watching God Creative Assignment
This is my creative assignment submission for my 11th Grade English course, for our unit on the novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.
In the book, the Okeechobee hurricane ravages through the region, causing some of the worst devastation ever. However, the chapter ends with an uplifting moment, as the weather calms and clears over. This assignment is my attempt to capture that moment, using actual samples from my trip to Scotland. One of my last compositions created in Mixcraft 7, using live audio recordings from my CASIO keyboard.

Orchestration Final Project: Large Symphonic Orchestration
This was my final project submission for my Orchestration class, where I orchestrated a small melody for a 34-piece orchestral ensemble, and then synthesized the piece in Ableton Live using Vienna Symphonic Library and Albion ONE.
