The latest edition to the series is a mix I recorded a few weeks ago sat in a cosy yurt at 10AM on a sparkling sunny morning in North Wales. Thanks so much to Eddy from Neighbourhood Cotch for having me play on his stage at On-Kilter, a small boutique festival set in a beautiful green estate. 

This was the first ambient set I played in person post-lockdown, and it was magical to hear this music on a big soundsystem again, and to feel it drifting out over the hills and through the ancient oak trees. To me, this music is always best experienced in nature, especially in the summer, so I'm glad to have had the chance to situate it there. Hope you enjoy this nearly 2.5hour long drifty journey ☀️🌳🍄

Today I am happy to share the latest edition of Deep Mind Music. This one is a live recording of the set I played on the 8th of May at Sonic Garden, sat on a very comfy sofa in the tree-covered terrace of IKLECTIK in South London 🌱

Many thanks to @avsluta & Christian Duka (@dvka) of Amoenus for the invite, it was a joy to play an extended set to such an engaged audience of listeners. The Amoenus sound system at IKLECTIK also has to be the most beautiful system I’ve ever played ambient music through, everything sounded so crisp and warm.

This set features a lot of the ambient and experimental music I’ve been enjoying lately, with an extended expedition into the ~dronezone~ (🖤)

There are some special tracks in here I treasure very dearly, and I’m happy they found a home in this mix. Whilst selecting these tracks, I was reflecting on the energies of spring, that shifting feeling of shedding off the last of winter’s introspection, whilst reaching forward into summer’s vibrant energy. I hope the mix provides a dreamy and expansive landscape for drifting away 🦋🍃🌤

I am really excited to share the next Deep Mind Music mix, made by my good friend Amphybian (fka Harry). Over the course of nearly two hours, Amphybian takes us on a wistful and mysterious journey, balancing density and effervescence in a slowly evolving and thoughtfully programmed narrative ☁️🕊️

The first half of the mix takes us up through thick clouds into flight above the earth, providing a vast sense of scale and a humbling perspective. I felt as if I was soaring through the stratosphere, at once both infinite and infinitesimal. As the mix unfolds, mossy carpets of drones and fluttering arpeggios carry us across a limitless expanse, thoughts and details slipping in and out of focus as we spiral inwards 🌀

In the second half of the mix, moments of joy give way to moments of sorrow, coiling into quiet eddies of emotion. The density of sounds slowly evaporate away into more subtle sonic touches and muted colours. I see a wet woodland after rainfall, a dust mote peeking through darkened branches, and the trickling of dewdrops on my skin.

As the mix concludes, and we gently ascend to wakefulness, I’m left with the blissful feeling of a misty sunrise after a darkened dawn. As the evenings grow dark, trees turn, and the air chills, this mix provides the perfect soundtrack for the seasonal shift to introspection 🌙🤍🍂

We’re feeling very honoured to welcome A Strangely Isolated Place and 9128.live head honcho, Ryan Griffin, aka ASIP.

Ryan's ear for label curation and his mixes under the ASIP moniker have really inspired us over the years, so it's exciting to get an insight into what he's been listening to lately.

Some words by Ryan about the mix:

"This mix came together over a 2/3 month period, as I've spent a large part of the summer between Oregon and California with family and haven't had much dedicated time to focus on a mix. Normally I approach mixes more conceptually, but this one came to life organically in pieces, over time. In hindsight, the mix reflects a specific period in time for me and a lot of my life musically over the past few months. From the unfortunate passing of Brian McBride (Stars of The Lid) and revisiting those brilliant albums nearly every evening; anticipating the new Lord of The Isles album after his standout isolatedmix this year; our latest label addition from Mary Yalex; music being sent to my inbox from new artists; and of course, a couple of upcoming ASIP releases that are keeping me busy lately. Thank you for having me as part of the series."

札幌を拠点に活動するkossこと高橋クニユキ。kuniyukiやKUNI名儀ではディープハウスやジャズシーンでのダンスミュージックで世界の音楽ファンを魅了させているが、彼のエレクトロやテクノ、アンビエントなどの要素を実験的に取り入れたユニットが「koss」である。2000年、koss名義で「Ring」をリリース。2001年にUKのフェス「Big Chill」に参加したことにより、国内外のアーティスト、メディアから一気に注目を集めることとなる。2005年にはヨーロッパ大手ディストリビューションKompaktの系列レーベル"Mule Electronic"から、2枚のEP、未発表曲を収録した作品をリリース。またアルバム収録曲「Ra 1030 In」をKARAFTO aka Fumiya Tanakaがリミックスし、海外でも高い評価を得た。そして2006年7月にkossの待望の2ndアルバム「four worlds converge as one」をリリースする。このアルバムはアンビエントとミニマリズムを主体にした実験的な作品で、よりディープな作品となっている。同年9月にMusium Of Plateのsaikotsukamotoとのユニット"SAIKOSS"をスタート。同ユニットではsaikoによるピアノとkossによるアンビエントな世界観が入り混じったストーリーを展開させている。2006年には「SonarTokyo」に出演し、ジェフミルズらに大絶賛された。現在も継続的に楽曲を制作中で、今後も新たなる世界をクリエイトしていく。

―まずは東日本大震災被災者の方へのメッセージが何かあれば、お聞かせいただけますか？

震災で心を悼めた方々がたくさんいらっしゃるので、今は言葉にできない気持ちが本当にたくさんで、きっとみんな同じように言葉がない方も多いと思うんです……。

「一人の人としてできることで皆さんと明日のために進んでいく」

今はこの思いを皆さんとシェアさせてください。

―ミックスのコンセプトがあれば教えてください。

今回はアンビエントミックスなのですが、エロクトロサイドのアンビエントの雰囲気から、よりナチュラルな世界を交差させた心地よさをコンセプトとしてみました。

―今回のミックスは「koss」名義ですが、ミックスをする上で「kuniyuki takahashi」名義とはどのように使い分けているのでしょうか？

kossはより実験的な思いがあります、kuniyuki名義ではオーガニックなフィーリングともう少しパーソナルな思いも大きいです。

―ご自身で気に入っているポイントはどちらでしょうか。

いろいろとありますがLawrenceの世界感からSimon fisher turnerの世界が変わる感じとか、そこからlonnie liston smith  、sebastian mullaertの曲にかわる感じも好みです。最後のmono fontanaもかなりポイントです。

―使用した機材を教えてください。

―近況と最近の活動について教えてください。

koss名義ではminilogueとの共作を今進行中です。kuniyuki名義では「Bamboo City/Come With Us」の12インチ、「All These Things」のJoe Claussellリミックスなどリリース予定です。

―"mule musiq"からリリースされるアンビエントコンピレーションアルバム「Enjoy the Silence」では、1曲目にkoss「Voyage」が収録されていますね。こちらについてイメージしたものや制作時のエピソードがあればお願いします。

"mule musiq"は僕にとって大切なクリエイトの場でもあり、たくさんのチャンスをいただいてるのですが、「Enjoy the Silence」シリーズでは、自分にとっては前作でも今作でも、koss名義のアルバムでは表現できない思いと形を作れるすばらしいコンセプトアルバムです。今回はオーケストラの演奏会で最初にある、各楽器のチューニングを合わせるために演奏している音を最初に表現したくて、そこから音楽の始まりがあるという意味で「Voyage」というタイトルにしました。同時に"mule musiq"への感謝の思いも大きいです。

―今後の活動予定を教えてください。

夏にはヨーロッパで"mule musiq"とのツアーを予定しています。それから今はたくさんの実験を試みていますが、それらが新しい形になったころには皆さんにお伝えできると思っています。

The next Deep Mind Music mix is a recording of the set I played in Croatia as part of Austrian collective @femdex’s 8 hour showcase at Lighthouse Festival on the 2nd of June 2019. Thanks to femdex for the invite 💓

I was playing on the Sunday evening, in one of the last sets of the 5 day festival. The ambient floor was set up in a clearing of the forest next to the sea. I’d always prefer to listen to ambient and drone outside, so I’m super grateful to have had the opportunity to play this music in such an idyllic setting. Looking up to see birds drifting over trees, with leaves rustling in the wind was pretty magical.

I feel like this set operates on a deeper and more cerebral plane than my other DMM mixes, designed for tired festival goers to zone out on the cushions under the trees, drifting in and out of consciousness.

I took this photo watching the sunset over the sea after my set.

Also, the first track of this set by @tarot-plane is going to be part of a forthcoming project I’m currently working on, so keep an eye out for news about that in the near future 👁

Vyvyan is an elusive character, a DJ and producer who prefers to operate under the radar. At the end of last year he showcased his tastes and influences in a mix or Bicep's Feel My Bicep mix series which gave listeners a glimpse into both his record bag and his own productions. Having delivered remixes for Psychemagik and Eclectic, last week saw the release of his new EP Coat Bra Pants on Me Me Me which includes remixes from Not An Animal's Chris Stoker and Robert Johnson resident Gerd Janson.

Die neunte Ausgabe unserer Blitzcast-Serie kommt von Vincent Neumann, der diese in Form einer wunderbaren Ambient-Mélange präsentiert. Im Rahmen der zwei Stunden lässt der Leipziger Distillery-Resident intime Soundscapes, nachdenklich-beflügelnde Vibrations, verschwommen-definierte Drone-Sphären und behutsame Rhythmus-Akzente zu einem durchweg zeitlosen Stimmungspool verschmelzen. As if by magic it's Monday. Again. How did we get here you ask? We don't have the answers but American composer and multi-instrumentalist Rafael Anton Irisarri has the perfect soundtrack to curb those inevitable beginning-of-the-week feels. 

Known for his immersive ambient productions, Irisarri has released several albums over the years with labels like Immune, A Strangely Isolated Place, Geographic North, Umor Rex and Room40, the latter two being imprints that he's returned to time and time again. Taking the form of continual compositions, his long players demonstrate his finesse at working with different techniques and textures, adding both classical and contemporary influences into the mix.

By day he works as a mastering engineer at his own Black Knoll Studio in New York, where he has prepared releases for the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Grouper and David August, as well as working regularly with labels like Ghostly International and RVNG Intl. 

Following the release of his new album Peripeteia on Dais Records in May, he blessed us with some recent soothing favourites, most of which he mastered at Black Knoll himself.
