THE ADVENT

EPM Podcast 144 comes from techno and electro legend The Advent. Cisco Ferreira, or ‘The Advent’, can be described in many ways: a musician, a pioneer, a sound designer, one persistent m*therf*cker, a rebel and more. Mostly though, The Advent is known for his interpretation of what we call Techno and Electro. It’s his passion for electro that we pick up here as Cisco brings a 20 tracxk electro jam session featuring the likes of Fleck E.S.C., Kronos Device, Bass Junkie, Plant43, Sub Sonic Force, Boris Divider and The Advent’s own track with Zein Ferreira (the clue’s in the surname) for our own 20 year celebrations.

Ever since young Portuguese Cisco discovered Acid House in the London clubs he frequented, his journey has been about making his mark on the electronic music scene. Or, as he recently put it himself: “I’ve been doing this for quite a few years and I’m not going anywhere.”

Fresh out of college, Cisco’s hunger for sound landed him a job as assistant sound-engineer in several recording studios. There he learned about the art of translating feelings to frequencies, while at the same time recording various high-profile artists from the world of Rock, Pop, Dance and Reggae. When acid label ‘Jack Trax’ moved in next-door, Cisco started recording for the likes of Adonis, Fingers Inc, Marshall Jefferson and Derrick May. These rendezvous sparked the inspiration for his first EPs on R&S and Fragile.

In 1994 Ferreira signed a record deal for 12 EPs and 3 albums together with Colin McBean. This was the beginning of an era during which the duo set a worldwide standard for high quality underground Electro and Techno. They hit the world with a refreshing sound, both as The Advent, and ‘G Flame (Cisco) and Mr G’, the alias Colin is still using. Nowadays The Advent is a solo project, bombarding crowds around the world with its trademark raw, energetic sound.

Continuing to take techno and electro into new realms via his Advent project and Kombination Research label, Cisco is also one of the co-founders of underground virtual club experience ‘Techno-Club’ where EPM also co-host the ‘Purple Room’ on a monthly basis.

The Advent lleva ya unos cuantos años en esto de producir música de clubs. Francisco Ferreira (Cisco) abandonó sus estudios de estilo cuando se encontró trabajando como ingeniero de sonido para nada más y nada menos que Derrick May y Fingers Inc & Adonis. Esto le condujo a participar en las legendarias Jack Trax series. Entre sus propias producciones nos encontramos auténticos clásicos como el Space Opera's y el Cisco Ferreira EP en Fragile Records. En 1989 Cisco se juntó a Colin y Keith para formar el Dj trío KCC. Los tres se convirtieron en residentes de las legendarias fiestas Confusión. Estos eventos, que tenían lugar los domingos por la noche, vieron pasar por su cabina a artistas de la talla de Kid Batchelor, Richie Hawtin, Kevin Saunderson, Robert Owens, Terry Hunter o Roger Sánchez. Colin Mc Bean y Cisco Ferreira comenzaron a grabar juntos en 1990, llegando a trabajar como ingenieros de sonido con Fade II Black (a.k.a. Jay Denham ) en Bio Rhythms 2. Por su parte, Cisco también ha trabajado con CJ Bolland en The 4th Sign, Mantra, Camarage, Nightbreed y también con Mundo Musique y Darren Price. En 1994 Cisco fichó por Internal Recordings y formó The Advent. Desde entonces este proyecto ha publicado una serie the EPs de electro y de techno absolutamente sobresalientes Elements of Life (1994) representaba a la perfección el sonido de The Advent. Después vino el CD Shaded Elements y luego le siguió su tercer largo New Beginning's en 1997. En 1998 vendría su mix álbum Kombination Phunk en el que prestaban temas Dopplereffect, Luke Slater y Keith Tucker. Su relación con la causa electro también daría resultados en su aportación al catálogo de Internacional Deejay Gigoló con Time Trap Technik (Gigoló, 56). En 1999 The Advent decidieron seguir sus carreras por separado. Colin inició su propia aventura discográfica con la creación de Phoenix G Records para recuperar sus viejos alias, G Glame -con su propio sello, Alpha Recordings y Mr. G. Por su parte, Cisco continúa como The Advent y además con su propia plataforma Kombination Research Records aunque no descuida otros sellos como Tresor -de 2002 es su contundente Sketched for life para este mismo sello berlinés-, Rotation Records (el sello de Dave Angel ) y en Synewave Records. Recientemente, Cisco se ha mudado a Lisboa para darle una vida más soleada a su familia -sus orígenes se remontan a la isla de Madeira de donde emigró con sus padres a Inglaterra-. En 2005 vuelve a Tresor para entregar un álbum de estudio titulado Trinity (Tresor). Sin centrarse exclusivamente en el hardtechno, que lo ha hecho popular, nos podemos encontrar tanto electro y como el house más sintético a lo largo del LP. No en vano uno de las colaboraciones del álbum es la voz de Paris Da Black Fu (más conocido como Detroit Grand Pubahs ). Encargos de sellos extranjeros que no impiden que siga concentrado en sus producciones para su propio sello Kombination Research Records que mantiene con mimo.

We are proud to announce the next edition of our DECENNIUM series, which comes courtesy of one of the most highly esteemed and influential Techno and Electro legends of our time; none other than our good friend and returning guest, Cisco Ferreira aka The Advent (Kombination Research, MORD).

Cisco has been at the forefront of the scene since the early 90's. Fresh out of college, Cisco’s hunger for sound landed him a job as assistant sound-engineer in several recording studios. When acid label ‘Jack Trax’ moved in next-door, Cisco started recording for the likes of Adonis, Fingers Inc, Marshall Jefferson, and Derrick May. These rendezvous sparked the inspiration for his first EPs on R&S and Fragile.

In 1994 Cisco signed a record deal for 12 EPs and 3 albums together with Colin McBean. This was the beginning of an era during which the duo set a worldwide standard for high quality underground Electro and Techno. They hit the world with a refreshing sound, both as The Advent, and ‘G Flame (Cisco) and Mr G’, the alias Colin is still using. Nowadays The Advent is a solo project, bombarding crowds around the world with it's trademark raw, energetic sound. A sound that grants him yearly slots at festivals as Nature One, Awakenings and Bonusz, as well as regular shows in clubs such as Berghain and Tresor. The list of releases is huge and ever-growing through some of the most heavyweight labels around, as well as via his own imprint Kombination Research.

After being huge fans of The Advent for many years, in 2019 we were finally able to relish the opportunity to book him to play a live set as part of our collaboration event with CPU Records at FOLD, amongst a lineup that included E.R.P. aka Convextion, Plant43, 96 Back, CPSmith and our residents Annie Hall, Kodah and Osc Kins. His set went down as one of the best live sets we have ever had the pleasure of witnessing and we were proud that this was produced at one of our events and heard by a packed venue on one of best club sound systems in the UK. Cisco has since returned to the Natural Selection front line last year at our 10-year milestone live stream at FOLD, where he was joined by The Fear Ratio (SKAM), 96 Back, Tasha b2b Voicedrone and more.

We feel Cisco has played a big part for Natural Selection over the last couple of years and we are eternally grateful for his support and enthusiasm for what we do. We are ecstatic to have such a titan on our DECENNIUM series with this exclusive set, as lethal as it gets.
