IF YOU KNOW

DAVID DEPHY 
I touched the grass in the morning. I felt strength.
As if the grass said to me:

“If you know what future is, 
it is because of hope, but there is only one place in the world 
you can hope—
your own way.”

DAVID DEPHY
I touched the rays in the afternoon. I felt calmness.
As if the rays said to me: 

THELMA T. REYNA
“If you know what life is, 
it is because of freedom, but there is only one place 
in the world you can be really free— 
your own self.” 

DAVID DEPHY
I touched silence in the night. I felt a miracle.
As if the night said to me: 

JUDY TUREK
“If you know your own self, 
it is because of will, but there is only one place in the world 
you can be better— 
heart of your loved one, if you know what love is, 
it is because of that heart.” 

DAVID DEPHY
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. 
Life, the simple name we give our breath.

IN THE DARK

Who says the hunt has begun? 
Thank the Lord I stayed awake.
I thought of freedom running in the dark 
with no difference of pits and graves, 
when the mist of night was my only ally,
a man cannot be destroyed once and for all.
Now I feel the dawn is due to come,
right from your heart, from other side of alone.
I thought of you, how you took a deep breath 
and said my name, how you exhaled the sky 
from you with every letter of that name, 
showing me the meaning of trust, 
justification of my own existence, 
there was no distance in the dark 
when the fears fell away.

THE NEW MOON

KASSIE RUNYAN
There must be an exit. 

DAVID DEPHY
Dawn floods in from a far 
and I fix my eyes, place my palms on the ground. 
I feel the light channel through our veins. 

KASSIE RUNYAN
Lost in the dark you must be crazy afraid the night. 
The new moon will bring to light the ways out 
you were unable to see. 

AARON FISCHER
The new moon knows who you are, 
it feels your breath and nudging you in a direction, 
that will not only bring more security, but more excitement. 

KASSIE RUNYAN
Pleasure of loneliness in the dark. You need to be honest, 
both with yourself and with the new moon. 

AARON FISCHER
Lost in silence you must be alive trusting the flow, 
the new moon knows who your enemy is, 
it feels your heartbeat. 

DAVID DEPHY
Do not wait to be asked for your opinion, 
give it and live the consequences. What you say over the next centuries, 
my lovely new moon, will never be forgotten.

SILENCE ON BAY SHORE

“Stay away from the secret societies,” said an old man.
“If it’s a secret, it’s probably bad.” Why he said that, I do not know. 
He looked at the Bay Shore. “See the horizon over there?” 
I felt ground under my feet. Silence on Bay Shore. 
“Yes,” I replied, watching a cool sea with an old man. 
We are wearing the inside out. I thought about seagulls. 
Do they know what’s beyond the clouds? 
Or deep under the rolling waves?
“They know a lot about us,” he said.
“Wait… What?” 
“Do not be afraid,” he said. “I hear your thoughts, 
and mirages of clear rays across the horizons, 
ripe expectations just over the ocean, right there. 
Do you really want to know the biggest secret about life? 
It is just to be alive. It is so obvious, not a secret at all, 
as if there were something to achieve beyond of your heart.” 
He looked at me again. His heart was dawning in that look.
Man is not what he thinks he is, or what he hides, I thought, 
but how he hears and sees and feels this inimitable silence on Bay Shore. 
I didn’t say a word after all and he whispered: “You are right.”

THE HUMANIST

DAVID DEPHY

When he rose before the jury of his peers
he knew he had arrived at the endgame 
of his belief, mirror against mirror, 

WAYNE MILLER

and when they read to him his crimes—
his betrayal of the time’s
consensus—he saw he would be folded into the body 

of the human story. He would be 
judged and found guilty 
of elevating men to this very position of judgment. 

The loneliest person on earth
is a humanist condemned. When the pyre
was lit, it bloated the square 

DAVID DEPHY

with light—the light his body fed. 
Later the guards cleaned up in darkness. 
We have no record of what they said.

The Michigan clouds hang lower in the sky.
Queen Anne’s Lace borders the train tracks.
Linnets fly in between the green
in each small white pebble there is a story of lost love.

Everything changes when the rain sets in.

I had a dream about the forest;
there was a patch of blue petunias
bowing slightly in the wind in their veins a gentle shade of purple
the sunlight played on their faces.
A wooden arch over their heads- someone must have built it to honor them. 
There were also some rare butterflies in cages.
Was this a sanctuary for the heart?

What have we lost that we cannot attain again?

The breeze plays off your shoulder and all the sadness you’ve ever known dies in the heat.

If you feel the waves of ocean, 
the wet words drifting on its breath,
if you hear the language of water,
if you see the distant rays 
over there do not make a sound. 
The shadows all around us 
are so strange. Smile.
It can be a sign of knowing—
what we’ve left behind 
as the night hides deep,
reveals those lights,
when the green flow of your wishes 
sounds as a prayer of Eastern stars 
up above all the shores of Atlantic.

IDEALISTS

See the faces over there? The masks?
They don't like idealists. 
They are uncomfortable.
They can't be controlled, because they hear themselves. 
They know what they deserve, because they are not willing to give in.
They are not afraid of loneliness, because they are not afraid of pain. 
They can see the beauty of truth, because they learned to turn wounds into wisdom. 
They live honestly, because they are responsible for what they have said and done. 
They are brave, because they are in love.
They are open-minded, because they are ready.
They act, because they are gifted. 
They are strong, and no one knows why. 
They are comprehensible, because they know how to leave. 
Strong people know how to leave one day, 
and forever.

Speed Forth the Darkness

There is time enough—
in the ruins, the arch still holds.
A tree has taken root
among the stones.
The oracle bones
in fragments
now predict
the still uncertain future.
We are fishermen
drawing in our nets
from calm waters,
oracles of what is.

catch to sort,

Can you starve in a city of millions
without anybody noticing?
Today I met somebody
who was licking his finger
I can’t remember him
I sing a song of la-da-dee-la-dee-da
And what about the birds, poet?
They never had anything to do with poetry
They only fly to be on the move
The rest is fabricated by poets

This way I don’t mistake the chemical nature of love

The sea is no more than a wet manipulator
To and fro, here nor there, ebb and flow

DON’T LISTEN TO THAT NOISE

~ for my mother


Look at me, don’t listen to that noise 
beyond the wall, look at me, say a word, 
any word, I still hear your voice 

from that divine side of alone— 
where we all will be born again, 
don’t be nicely listless, don’t be 

silent, don’t be afraid, don’t follow 
that noise right before dawn, all the lilac 
shadows dwell in the end of the road, 

changing that end into the fleeting glimpse 
of transforming blaze right from your heart, 
from the other side of light, don’t listen 

to that noise, and before you’ll reunite 
hold on for a second, shadows are their own 
masters, on the soundless side of alone, 

but seconds are now gone, and light all 
around vanishes in a void, remembering 
my smile in your distant heavenly eyes.

Breeze of Bay Shore

Long ago, the wind knew my plans. I asked myself: 
“If the wind knows our plans who can defeat the wind?” 
Long ago, I knew the answer. Silence.

I always knew that we all are going to the garden, 
and there was a street, empty, tiny, calm street, 
with the tiny wall, at its very end, and a garden 

beyond that wall. Ruins, as precious dust of hope, 
and wishes. Long ago, in noisy night I was attacked. 
I don’t remember those faces, voices, I left for dead. 

All I remember is my own breath, 
strangely telling the truth— meaning of loneliness, 
as if that garden beyond the wall 

was the sanctuary of my own heart, always alive, 
always beautiful from the very beginning of time.
I lived to revenge myself against my enemies, 

not for what they were – for what I was, 
from the end of childhood, friendship, war, 
from the beginning of understanding— 

when we all were created as a crown of the world, 
I thought the loneliness, and even that pain meant 
we were not loved, but standing on the other side 

of alone, I felt the cold breeze of bay shore, 
and took a deep breath, I heard the seagulls up above, 
“it’s all over now,” I realized, and it meant we loved.

Language, the spirit of silence. 
Each word, the heart of silence.
Without hearts we are sightless,
with fingers searching for rays. 

I was circled by the cutlery of 
emptiness, but I felt your breath 
one day, I realized my existence. 
Essence emerged from emptiness.

The Mirrors

I am not going to change you. 
You are the mirror of myself. 
As I am yours. 
I still remember that bird 
flying above Pearl Street 
in the Financial District in Manhattan, 
as if the sky was its mother, 
the bird hugging and kissing the air, 
the sky so close to me, 
so clear, reflecting the buildings 
on its transparent body with the centuries of revelations. 
The sky was the mirror of earth, that day, 
and I felt that smell, 
the smell of expectation we both love.

Breeze of Bay Shore

Long ago, the wind knew my plans. I asked myself:
“If the wind knows our plans who can defeat the wind?”
Long ago, I knew the answer. Silence.

I always knew that we all are going to the garden,
and there was a street, empty, tiny, calm street,
with the tiny wall, at its very end, and a garden

beyond that wall. Ruins, as precious dust of hope,
and wishes. Long ago, in noisy night I was attacked.
I don’t remember those faces, voices, I left for dead.

All I remember is my own breath,
strangely telling the truth— meaning of loneliness,
as if that garden beyond the wall

was the sanctuary of my own heart, always alive,
always beautiful from the very beginning of time.
I lived to revenge myself against my enemies,

not for what they were – for what I was,
from the end of childhood, friendship, war,
from the beginning of understanding—

when we all were created as a crown of the world,
I thought the loneliness, and even that pain meant
we were not loved, but standing on the other side

of alone, I felt the cold breeze of bay shore,
and took a deep breath, I heard the seagulls up above,
“it’s all over now,” I realized, and it meant we loved.

Breath of silent grace—
alone, wrapped in quietude,
divine, simple truth.

ტყეს ვაკოცე პირდაპირ ფოთლებში
ვაკოცე ღამეს პირდაპირ ვარსკვლავში
დილას ვაკოცე მისივე ნისლში
ვაკოცე შუადღეს მისივე ჩრდილში
ვაკოცე დროს პირდაპირ წამში
წარსულს ვაკოცე მოგონებებში
ვაკოცე მომავალს წინათგრძნობაში
ვაკოცე აწმყოს პირდაპირ აქ
ვაკოცე სიკვდილს შიგ სიცოცხლეში
სიცოცხლეს ვაკოცე შიგ სიყვარულში
სიყვარულს ვაკოცე შიგ შუაგულში
უსასრულობას პირდაპირ უკვდავებაში

ვაკოცე და სიჩუმეთი. სულით ვაკოცე.

კოცნა ზღაპარს მოასწავებს,
მოცდა მიწევს შენი კოცნის,
ორ ცად მოწყდა მთა ვარსკვლავებს
შემოქმედი, გენიოსი,

სამყაროს ქმნის, შენც მოხვედი
შენ მფარველობ გზებს და ბინებს,
სადაც ვცხოვრობთ, ჩვენი ხვედრით,
კოცნაც როცა დაგიპირე

მთის ნისლივით გაგეღიმა,
მთის სურნელიც მინდორშია
და ვიგრძენი სიზმარს მიღმა
შენც, რომ ჩემთვის გიკოცნია.

I kissed the mountain right in the sky

I kissed the rain right in the rainbow

I kissed the fire right in the ashes

I kissed the sea right in the shell

I kissed the forest right in the leaves

I kissed the night right in the star

I kissed the morning in its own mist

I kissed the afternoon in its own shadow

I kissed the time right in the second

I kissed the past in the memories

I kissed the future in the presentiment

I kissed the present right here

I kissed the death into the life

I kissed the life into the love

I kissed the love into the heart

I kissed the infinity right into the eternity,

I kissed all five senses:

Music, right in the sound,

Miracle, into the mystery,

I also kissed you, right inside of me

And the poetry, in the silence, 

With my word and my spirit.



A kiss foreshadows a fairy tale,

I have to wait for your kiss,

The falling mountain cut the sky in half

Leaving the constellation,

Creator, Genius.


Is creating the universe, where you appeared,

You protect roads and homes,

Where we live by our fate,

And when I was about to kiss you,



You smiled like a mountain's mist

With its fragrance in the valley,

And I felt beyond the dream,

That you also kissed me.

დღეს ჩემი სული დაენთქა ქვესკნელს, დღეს შემისრულდა ბედი და ვხუმრობ

და მეცინება და მემღერება, რადგანაც ვიცი, ვიცი რომ მისმენთ,
რადგანაც ციმციმს, ვარსკვლავთა ციმციმს, სულიც აჰყვება, სუნთქვებსაც ზღვის ფერთ,

თქვენთან ამოაქვთ ხმა და სიტყვები, ის საიდუმლო სიტყვები, რითიც,
თქვენი სიჩუმე ჩემთან ლექსად ჩანს, თქვენი სიჩუმე მუსიკად ისმის,

შენთან გაღვიძება დაბადებაა.
 შენთან დაძინება მოგზაურობა.
 ერთმანეთს მივყვებით ერთმანეთისკენ.
 ერთმანეთიდან ვბრუნდებით უკან.

ჩემ წინ სამყარო იშლება, მთიების ცეცხლს 
და მნათობებს, ვხედავ სიტყვებად, სხივებად
და მე ეს საოცრად არ მყოფნის.

ჩემ ხელისგულზე წვეთავენ, ცანი, წვიმებით, 
სიზმრებით, გუშინდელი გავს დღევანდელს 
და მე ეს საოცრად არ მყოფნის.

გიყვარვარ, ვიცი, გიყვარვარ. ყოველთვის 
გიყვარდი, ყოველთვის... და მე ნაწვიმარ სიზმართან, 
ყოფნა არ ყოფნაც არ მყოფნის.

სამყაროს დრო დაუმთავრდა, გწვავს 
და შუაზე გხევს, საკუთარ თავთან ეძახის,
ყოველ ჩვენგანთან, ღმერთს.

შუქნი დადგნენ ჩემ გარშემო.
მიიღე.
გადასხივდნენ ყველა მხარეს.
მიიღე.
სული ჩემი შენც გაჩვენო.
მიიღე.
დაგამშვიდებს. გაგახარებს.
მიიღე.
უსასრულოდ გამჭვირვალე.
მიიღე.
უასასრულოდ სიტყვიერი.
მიიღე.
უსასრულოდ არსებითი.
მიიღე.
და არსებით უსასრულო.
მიიღე.
და მდიდარი სინათლეთი.
მიიღე.
განემდიდრა სხივთა ფერს.
მიიღე.
სულ თავისთან მიმაფრენდა.
მიიღე.
და ამწამსაც მიმაფრენს.
მიიღე.
შუქნი, შუქნი ჩვენ გარშემო.
მიიღე.
მე შენ გჩუქნი მათ იდეას.
მიიღე.
უსასრულოდ წრფელი შუქნი.
მიიღე.
გჩუქნი, გჩუქნი, დღესვე გჩუქნი.
სიმშვიდე.

და ვნება ჩემი ჯერ ისევ ღვივის
და ისევ ცეცხლია და არა ფერფლი
და თუ მტკენს ის მტკენს და ის მირჩენს 
ტკივილს, მიყვარხარ მითქვამს 
და ისევ გეტყვი...

და როგორც ადრე, დიდი ხნის წინათ
ბრწყინავდნენ ვარსკვლავნი და ისევ
ბრწყინავენ... და თითქოს მათ შორის
წვანან და სძინავთ, ზეცათა მგზავრებს
სიზმრად მფრინავებს...

სიცხადეს რომლებიც, ზვერავენ 
თითქოს, ჯილდოვდებიან ყველა 
უფლებით, მე ეგეთი ვარ, 
მე ასე ვფიქრობ...
და რასაც ვფიქრობ შენ გეუბნები.

სიჩუმეს უსმინე... 
სათქმელს ის გეტყვის...
თვითონ სიცოცხლეა ის ერთადერთი
მიზეზი სიკვდილის, ბოროტს და კეთილს
ვინც ვერ ითავსებს და მაინც ეტრფის.

ტრფობა კი ჩვენი 
უსასრულოა...
და მე მიყვარხარ უსასრულობით,
მივედით თითქოს ღმერთის იმედით
ერთმანეთამდე. ვუსახსოვრებდი

ჩემივე წარსულს... 
ჩემივე აწმყოს...
სიბნელე ზოგჯერ ყველას გვაბრმავებს,
შუქივითაა, მსურს ხელი ვახლო
უსასრულობის ამ დიდ სათავეს

მოგავს რომელიც 
სამყაროს სამოსს...
ისიც მოვიცვა, მის სუნთქვებს შევყვე,
იქაც მოგძებნო, კვლავ შეგიყვარო,
სიკვდილისა და სიცოცხლის შემდეგ.

ჰაერზე ვპოულობთ ჩვენ ფეხის სადგამს.
მიწაზე დგომა ჩვენ ალბათ შეგვშლის.
მიყვარხარ ვინც ხარ ისეთი რადგან
შენს გარდა არაფერს დავეძებ შენში.
