Words are hard to come by in describing what this man meant to me.  The photo is worth a thousand words capturing his charm and personality. We began our musical pilgrimage together as bandmates at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Amarillo, TX.  He was a bit shy, entirely unsure of himself as a mandolin player, but with encouragement and practice his playing began to bloom.  We started to do brief offertories and then expanded that music into some of the tracks presented here which have been updated as noted. 
He noticed a lump on the side of his neck two years ago which became uncomfortable to the touch and started to interfere with swallowing.  He was not a smoker, but a biopsy revealed a squamous cell carcinoma.  He valiantly fought the disease with the best treatments available but succumbed to it July 17, 2023. He leaves behind a loving family, a legacy of faith and faithfulness to his Lord, and his love of music celebrated with these collaborations I was honored to create with him.  Rest in peace dear friend until we meet again at His appearing.

March is a month of contrasts, especially on the High plains, and really anywhere in the Midwest and Southern states.  Sometimes after lamb-like weather, a lion of a storm system can form bringing a blizzard to the Front Range from Denver to Cheyenne and tornados to within a few miles of Amarillo.  Pat and I try to put a little of March's moodiness into music first inspired by his mandolin musings that also inspired an earlier track "The Return".

I decided to take acoustic stabs at one of my  previous Christmas songs.  This song is based on my real life Uncle Lou.
The lead vocals (Rhode NT1  5th generation mic) and guitar (Taylor 114ce,  capo first fret, plugged in) were recorded simultaneously on two separate tracks and then I went back and added the backing vocals (strongly resisting the urge to add any other instruments).

Christmas comes once a year.
It’s a time of happiness and cheer and it’s also the one day that Uncle Lou gets to use his electric knife
He used to work in a butcher shop and all day long there was meat to chop.
But now he’s an accountant and his life is kind of dull in a mind numbing sort of way.

But when it comes time for Uncle Lou to cut the Christmas ham and turkey
he get’s a wild gleam in his eye
He says don’t worry I’m a professional
I know what I am doing
as we all try to get out of his way

Uncle Lou’s got the electric knife
And we’re fearing for his life
That poor turkey had no chance
I think I’m gonna wet my pants
We’re afraid that Santa won’t come
And if he does he’ll turn and run
He’ll take one look Uncle Lou
And his reindeers will be scared too

They say Electric knives have a high injury potential
And losing a finger is very consequential
But Uncle Lou doesn’t seem to care
He’s got the culinary version of a chainsaw in his hand
And he picks it up and he takes command
If he had a hockey mask you’d swear it was Friday the 13th
After a few minutes his job is complete
And then we all sit down to eat
Instead of saying grace we thank God that his fingers have survived for another year

This song began with Chris composing it with his synth, guitar, drum pad and bass. Like many of his songs, it was pretty well formed before the rest of the group got a hold of it. This song was part of a load of songs he shared with the rest of Eclectic Collective all at once. We've been picking them off one by one, though, as we're always grateful to Chris for sharing his magic with us.
  The odd sound of the rhythmic melody, which uses chromatic walks, immediately caught Josh's ears. It struck him as something the Doors might have come up with. So, he set about replacing Chris' simple bass line with something fancier, as well as coming up with the lead guitar for the whole thing, and the lyrics and vocals, as well. Josh was really taken with this one, and heard all kinds of parts in it almost immediately. Ken went to bat next, adding his innovative, John Densmore-like drums to it, replacing Chris' initial rhythmic idea. JJ came next and added the essential piano you hear throughout. After that, Mark found a place for his amazing bassoon/harpsicord solo in the middle. But before it was all over, Chris also added some doubled vocals, too, to actualize the lyrics, which are about two friends taking an acid trip together. 
  After it was all laid down, we asked Tez to mix it for us, which he did in his expert fashion, as always.
  This is our latest song composed by Chris, and we love working on his music. If you dig this, you should pay his page a visit, too, as it's full of diamonds. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

He is also a skilled and experienced performer so its like having one of those bandmates that can pick you up and make you sound great! Im so looking forward to more !!

Big Hard Sun   ( Indio Tribute )

Collaborated with my good friend and band mate Pat Howell on mandolin to compose this uplifting tune. We first played it as an offertory at church but wanted to do more with it in a studio setting. We like the results and hope you do too. Named in honor of Pat's new puppy, now a very energetic dog:)

Both Pat and I are blessed to have daughters. So when he came to me with this musical idea in honor of his daughter, I was quick to get on board. We originally released the tune (an Irish reel of sorts) as a church offertory, but decided to make a more formal recording, and now with an added second guitar part that Pat loved when we reprised it as offertory in honor of his daughter's homecoming from college for Thanksgiving.

Some clear sky and fresh air for those who have to shelter in place. I floated this tune (pun intended) by my band mate Pat on mandolin and he was quick to compose a part that added a real sense of open sky to my pickings. Hope you enjoy this seafaring shanty.  
With Pat's passing I wanted to post this song with a modified intro--a little ditty he loved to play "The Irish Washer Woman".  
I came across the poem "Sea Fever" by John Masefield. The feel of the song fits the poem, but composer John Ireland does it much greater justice.
