Fingerstyle playing has been a passion for me for over 45 years, having fallen in love with it when I first heard a college friend play with his fingers instead of a pick.  It was mesmerizing and I determined then and there I must learn how.  This song is the first I wrote using fingerstyle and has followed me around now for over 40 years evolving as I learned more playing technique.  I think it is still evolving, but this is where it is now; shades of light and shadow, good times, difficult times, hopefully full of the Grace of God. It is a musical portrait of me.  Performance note:  only one guitar used, the Taylor JKSM, standard tuning, no overdubbing--strictly solo fingerstyle.

What a lovely surprise Debra came up with when I asked if she would like to collaborate on an earlier released song "Nice to See You".  She couldn't get past "Ode to Joy" when she first started, and I told her "Let's just run with it and see what other Christmas music might go with the song". I don't think of prayer as a passive activity, but actively engaging and dialoguing with God about the state of affairs be it personal or of late, international in scope and consequence.  I am praying for Ukraine that their show of strength in the face of tyranny may be rewarded with freedom and peace. I'm praying also for Russia, a land of vast wealth and beauty, for the people whom I have come to know and love on the Cloud, that they may know it is a bad actor and not them who is to blame for the shadow that has fallen upon Europe, and in a broader sense, over all of civilization.  Peace is not the exception to human existence, bullets and bombs are.  Love is the state of normal we want to have, not hate.  I offer in this guitar meditation a prayer for peace.

What an honor to add my acoustic guitars to this collaboration with ace electric guitarist, keyboardist, and producer Seagull, Soundcloud's Poet Laurette Peter, Soundcloud's Poet of the piano, Debra Buesking, and vocalists Clara, and Snowflake.  With this visionary and epic trilogy, we explore the human condition and the choices we must make that will determine our destiny as a race.  It is a longer work but a rewarding listen if taken as a whole, but can still be appreciated in smaller bites if time doesn't allow a nearly 16 minute commitment. With this Epilogue is the summing up of Seagull's trilogies about our planet's past, present, and future and how it will be affected.  And because it is our home, how WE will be affected, especially our children, and our children's children extending to generations, by the choices we make now. Epilogue of All Your Choices (Seagull, Peter, Debra, and David)

What a wonderful tune Seagull sent me to collaborate on.  His nylon-string and bass playing is lovely but he asked if I could help with a second guitar voice.  The Taylor JKSM seemed the perfect fit with its sweet steel-string acoustic voice.  The undercurrent of meaning in the song is best described by Seagull himself:
"The song is called Stairway, and I realized that it reflects everyone's climb in life. We are encouraged and taught from birth that we must constantly get better at everything. Better upbringing, better behavior, better education, better job, better pay, better things, better health, better parent, better home, better car and so on...But what is the real goal of all this striving? Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with education hopefully producing better and more understanding and empathetic people, and a safer and nicer society. But.....and I think it's a big but.... as we are obviously being trained to buy all the happiness we need in life instead of experiencing it in a peaceful, healthy and experiential life." 
It is a question of what is ultimately important in our life and are we willing to make the climb to reach and attain it.  Something to ponder while you listen:)

Stairway (Seagull, David and Clara Sorace, vocal)

This is a song about the color Purple which has a fascinating history from ancient times.  It was the color of kings and royal pageantry.  In its purest form it was the rare dye extracted from a particular type of snail, requiring thousands to produce enough dye to color a handkerchief.  It is remembered that Jesus, during his passion, was draped in a purple robe as a means of mockery.
Purple was also the favorite color of Athena Alexandria Brownfield (9/6/2018-12/25/2022) a little girl who tragically died on Christmas day, the victim of extreme neglect. I came across this little improv I did a while back on Pat Howell's beautifully crafted home-built guitar, and had been keeping it in my back pocket for St. Patty's Day.  In this track I riff on some tunes I've played over the last several years but take on a new richness played on his guitar in drop D tuning.  If you're keeping score, the first is "Emerald Isle", the second is "A Splash of Joy" and last is "Celtic D'lite".  Enjoy with your favorite Irish brew:)

This is what happens when you let an ace producer get hold of a track; he transforms it:)  The song was originally dedicated to my son-in-law Marshall who is a law and order type of guy.  Special thanks to Seagull @farout-music-studio for taking what started as a jam session with superb guitarist Curtis Gremmel and elevated to celestial heights with a little help from Clara.  
An additional note: we just come to learn that "Space Marshals" was a popular video game eight years ago and apparently still is given the large number of listens.  I'm not a "gamer" but appreciate all who are who have given this music a listen:)

It always amazes me how the simple sharing of a guitar idea can become a full-fledged song in the hands of master-producer Seagull @farout-music-studio. But it first started out as a love song from Godin, a guitar with a unique and beautiful nylon-string voice.

The invitation to walk in the Hallelujah Mountains with Dan and Clara came at a time I was also walking with my close friend Pat Howell in the final days of his battle with cancer.  When finished, and Pat had just passed, the music became the catalyst that allowed my tears to flow for the loss of my friend.  The music may come to mean something entirely different for you the cherished listener; it is French Fantasy after all, where nearly anything is possible.

This song began one morning while I was "noodling" on the guitar, key of G, 5th fret capo using D shapes, (for the guitarists out there:), and thought it the beginning of a promising recipe for a song; but it sounded a little thin.  It needed some extra seasoning and a little protein, so I sent it to Debra Buesking for her culinary expertise and she supplied all the lovely touches it needed.  It's now ready to serve, our version of "Noodle Soup". Enjoy:)

Ahhh, nothing quenches the thirst like a glass of cool, clean water.  Of the things we take for granted this might be near the top of the list, but shouldn't.  Fresh water is a primary resource for civilization.  Ancient Rome knew this early on building a vast water system for moving and storing water.  Our municipal leaders are often occupied with securing and maintaining a supply of fresh water.
This is Seagull's first of three trilogies that look at this natural resource and the peril it faces unless it is managed wisely.  The song list is as follows:

The Water Planet Project (part 1) Seagull, Peter, Dan-t, Ed Cunningham, Thommo, David

Welcome to The Water Planet Project-Part 3 of our trilogy about one of our most endangered resources, fresh water. In this part we consider the relative present. Certainly mankind has accomplished many good things during the course of human development.  But in his ignorance, greed, hunger for power, etc., also many bad ones. And it's all the bad ones that give us an increasingly broken planet and world to live in, where fresh water reserves are quickly running out, or becoming polluted all over the world.
We are not judging anyone, we are just asking you to think for a moment, because what we have done and continue to do to our planet and each other, is actually unsustainable for our future generations. We must ask; "how will the lack of vital fresh water in a few decades affect humanity's possibility of continued existence?"  Part 3 ponders the painful answer to that question.

The Water Planet Project-Part 3--Watch It On Youtube

To lose hope is to feel the heart go numb, to no longer care about anyone, and even less, about oneself.  Faith and hope are so closely allied as to be at times indistinguishable, but it is faith that comes first giving birth to hope and nurturing it.  Christmas is also a call to hope springing from a faith that dares to believe the impossible.

My Heart Is Numb--Seagull, David, and Clara

Sometimes faith is best looked at like a photographic negative; what does our heart feel when faith is lost? It is so closely allied with hope that the two are hard to distinguish when either or both are lost; but tears are often the result. For many this Christmas, a troubled world only scratches the surface of the personal trouble felt from having lost faith in a loved one, themselves, and perhaps even God.  Christmas is a call to faith, to reach out beyond oneself in the hope that there is One who can give faith, or restore faith that has been lost.  "Hope" is what we consider next...

Slowly The Tears Fall--Seagull, David, and Clara

"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, love never fails".  St. Paul continues his treatise on love to the Corinthian church--but is it true?  God help us if it is not. It is the central message of Christmas; that He becomes one of us to show us what love is in an ultimate way.  
And we celebrate glimpses; to feel the heartbeat of a loved one, to look deep into the eyes of the beloved and glimpse the soul, to hold the hand of young and old, to give aid to the helpless, hope to the hopeless, to forgive with the hope of healing.  Is it possible that acting in faith and hope is love in action?  I think so, I pray so. Merry Christmas and may you be blessed by feeling the pulse of those around you:)

Shadow Or Light (with Dan-DT and Clara)

Seagull surprised me with this lovely song as a gift for my 70th birthday, featuring his playing on acoustic guitar, and likening our friendship and musical comradery to a "walk in the morning dew".  I was beyond honored:)  Then the thought occurred to him, "what if Ed, Dan, Peter, and David joined me on my walk?"  Peter's words set the stage comparing our friendship (and lasting friendship in general) to fine gold "hewn from so much more than mere common ground"  Ed's gorgeous electric guitar defines the melody, Dan's synths and Clara's vocals add depth and emotion, and I get to decorate an already beautiful production in the left and right channels.  It is now a magnificent 70th birthday gift, enriched by my musical bond and friendship with these fine artists, and one I want to share with you dear listener. A Walk In Morning Dew (Seagull, Ed Cunningham, Dan-DT, Peter, and David)

Most small towns have something they're known for;  it might be a building or a statue, or some famous person who lived there.  When I was a Baptist pastor forty years ago in the little town of St Francis, Kansas, it was the "Walkin' Boys.  Not exactly "boys", they were three middle-aged brothers who were probably autistic and lived at the local nursing home called "The Village".  Their parents made provision for them to live there after they passed away so they would be well taken care of.  What made them so memorable was they would venture out every day from the Village regardless of the weather and walk the length of the town, checking their post office box, stopping in at the jewelry store to have their watches set, then proceed out to the cemetery to pay their respects to their parents, then return to the Village.  They would make this three mile trip three times a day if the weather wasn't too extreme, and you could almost set your watch by when they would pass by.  I felt they needed a song, and it is one that's still remembered by those who knew them. I understand the last of the Walkin' Boys passed away just a few years ago having lived to a ripe old age of course--they walked every day:)  The song also features my singing; something that got lost along the way some years ago. You'll also hear a little tape hiss; it was mastered from a forty-year-old cassette:)

Civic "time keepers" are not unusual and some are quite famous; Big Ben comes to mind, Times Square of course.  Smaller towns may have a clocktower, or the local church may have chimes that ring at certain times of the day.  For St. Francis, Kansas, it was the civil defense siren.  It would sound three times a day; at 7:00 AM, 12:00 noon, and 6:00 PM, and take the day off on Sunday unless there was an emergency.  
Like the "Walkin' Boys", the St. Francis siren was integral to the character of the town and I felt it, too, needed a song;)  I decided to write the song as if the siren were telling its story.  And you're in luck, you even get to hear the actual siren and the dogs barking in chorus to help it sing its song.  Harvested from a forty year-old cassette tape, you'll hear a little hiss, but is quickly forgotten:)

A few months before my dear friend and collaborator Pat Howell passed away, he shared a chord progression with me (heard at the beginning) that became the song's foundation and wanted to see if I could make something of it.  I fleshed out the progression into a song, but by then he had become too ill to help me finish it.  The song languished for months and then I thought maybe Seagull could finish the thought Pat and I started.  His additions were superb and not only completed the song, but a weave of friendship that started with Pat's inspiration. Rest in peace my friend, and thank you dear Seagull for making our initial weavings a reality.

Weave Of Friendship

Pulled from the archives, Julie Evans brings the Blues to her exquisite violin playing in this cover of the famous Arthur Hamilton song.  I had the privilege of backing her up with acoustic guitar and bass.  Remastered from a cassette tape recorded in 1997. Though I have never visited Ireland, Irish blood runs through my veins and I always seem to feel a surge of it this time of year.  Kerry County is considered by many one of the most beautiful places on Earth; the openness of crystal-blue sky reflected in the water, and an eternal green seen from horizon to horizon.  And if one is lucky, a glimpse of the Bog Pony might be caught.

This is a follow-up posting of a wonderful collaboration Dan-T had invited Debra and I to contribute to.  Dan had posted it well over a year ago as a backing track to a dramatic French Fantasy production.  With his kind permission after the delay of a year, I wanted to post this as a celebration of a different kind of drama--life awakening from a long winter sleep. Dan's synths are sweeping and epic, Debbie's playing is measured and elegant like the words in a fine poem.  The Requinto guitar has a sweet voice sounding a bit like a Celtic harp to round out the production. Synopsis

Following unprecedented worldwide growth in human conflict, an emergency plenary session of the United Nations was convened late in 2023, tasked with finding new approaches to defuse global tension and ease conciliation. Recognizing the abject failure of extant UN jurisdictions and powers, and in a radical restructuring of the international legal and security framework, that session established a new UN institution to sit alongside the International Court of Criminal Justice. The International Court of Moral Justice was formally incorporated into the UN Constitution on 1 January 2024.

The foundations of this infant organization and those of the UN itself were shaken when it was revealed that the inaugural case to be heard by the ICMJ was to be a private prosecution brought by greed (Lord Mammon) against the defendant, mankind’s innate sense of humanity personified by Lady Humanity

In papers lodged with the court, the protagonist, Lord Mammon has asserted that the fundamental basis for human misery, the creation of discontent, thence envy and hence conflict, is to be found exclusively in false moral goodness and self-righteousness borne of a misplaced sense of benevolence. The human race survived and thrived, he states, not by moving at the pace of the slowest, or sharing resources with the weakest, but by taking and keeping, for the self alone, much more than is needed for basic subsistence, this being the singular route to strength, individual contentment and thus tolerance of others.

In reply, a broken and demoralized Lady Humanity has been compelled to present her own defense after failing to secure funding for a legal team to counter the advocates ranged in front of Lord Mammon. The case for the defense rests solely on the premise that good comes from within and cannot be created from nothing.
