I'll Be On My Way

A few months before my dear friend and collaborator Pat Howell passed away, he shared a chord progression with me (heard at the beginning) that became the song's foundation and wanted to see if I could make something of it.  I fleshed out the progression into a song, but by then he had become too ill to help me finish it.  The song languished for months and then I thought maybe Seagull could finish the thought Pat and I started.  His additions were superb and not only completed the song, but a weave of friendship that started with Pat's inspiration. Rest in peace my friend, and thank you dear Seagull for making our initial weavings a reality.

This is a story about an Irish heroine called Grace O'Malley, Also known as Grainne of Clare. She lived in the late 1500's, she was known as the Pirate Queen of Ireland. She made fortunes, saved her sons from the Queen of England, fought on behalf or Ireland with her armada of ships and was a fierce, beautiful force of nature.. a true example of valour, will power, grace under pressure, fortitude and determination, with a commanding spirit. My 1945 Martin 0-18 had tuning peg problems and found the little brass gear teeth were bent, not allowing some strings to tune, so used a dremel thin metal cutting tip to make very minor cuts to the tuning peg gears, brass, and straightened the teeth and then the pegs all tuned without needed a pair of pliers:) so new strings and was totally surprised at how GREAT it sounds and found a great chord, in the open C tuning I love. so wrote a tune with that chord in mind and I use Studio one DAW, no EQ, only some compressor and reverb and nothing else, so the sound is a lot like what I hear when it is in my hands playing.
