Exclusive: Superpitcher - Lush Life feat. Fantastic Twins

He’s back. He’s back with some lush music. He’s back with his Lush Life single. Aksel Schaufler alias Superpitcher, a Kompakt mainstay, the co-label head of Hippie Dance, one part of the Pachanga Boys and known as the ambassador of the golden rave days, debuts on the Live At Robert Johnson label with a two tracker as golden as the twelve ravey chapters he’s put out on his own label. Lush Life, the EP’s eponymous track, features French-Berliner Fantastic Twins’ for the vocals, and comes in as Superpitcher-esque on the one hand and quite different on the other. The almost ten minute lasting track is probably a typical Superpitcher feature, what is new though, is the selection of sounds and the result in general. Aksel created an utterly atmospheric take, which flows by as fast as the rave-days, and takes its listeners back to the days when Francois K delivered dubby House music takes per excellence, just like Superpitcher does now himself. Peaceful almost spiritual and endearing are traits that describe the emotional components the track evokes in its listeners with a Julienne Dessagne, Fantastic Twins real name, delivering those charming vocals that hunt you through the night and over the floors.

Superpitcher's single Lush Life will be released on Live At Robert Johnson on February 18th, 2022.

With The Tiger, Matias Aguayo returns to Kompakt with his first EP for the label since 2014’s Legende. Since then, he’s been busy with all manner of experiments and explorations – a monthly radio show on Worldwide FM, 2019’s Support Alien Invasion; the essential El Rudo Del House series; an album on Crammed Discs with his group The Desdemonas; collaborations with Sano and Gladkazuka (as Rionegro), DJ Spoko, Mujaji, Julianna, a new trio with DJs Pareja, named MDM Factory, and the latest offering on his Cómeme imprint, El Cameron featuring Ricardo Villalobos. But something special happens when Aguayo returns to the mothership, as though he’s reconnecting with something essential: “pop melancholy is just right there,” he says.

On The Tiger, Aguayo is in touch with the core of the flame, the music that’s at the centre of his being. While most of the music may have originated “in the foggy Mexican forest,” he’s sure that the EP is “still a Cologne record,” something you can hear as soon as the prowling bass, shuffling rhythms and ghostly voices of the title track lope stealthily into earshot. The titular character is caught up in the sensuous tangle of the night, that space between dusk’s delirium and dawn’s dreaming. Aguayo sings, “Do you see the same I see? Are we having the same dream?” – here, he’s picturing an after-hours revelation, “on a warm muggy night with all sorts of background noise from various nightwalking animals – but at the same time, I was a city dweller stranded in the jungle, who still dressed like he was about to go to the disco.”

The ascending, ever-circling bass of “Nightshift, The Red” tells another story, a spiralling mantra that’s hypnotically psychedelic, yet elegant, refined, filled with sonic textures you can almost reach out and touch, like knotted twists of exotic fabric. “The lyrics are very associative and somewhere between urban and jungle nightlife,” Aguayo mentions, “fireflies shine, but also the reflections of the disco ball.” “Show Me What You’re Feeling” takes us back to the 1990s, with Aguayo re-working some vocal and lyrical fragments from three decades ago, its beautiful uncertainty remarkable in what Aguayo calls its “extremely emotional openness”. Dappled with melancholy, it’s a lover’s hymn to intimacy and vulnerability.

Aguayo signs off The Tiger with “El Propio Propio”, a celebratory ending to an EP that’s rich and complex, full of lovely musical moments – the tender melodies woven through “Show Me What You’re Feeling”; the warping, pliable, plastic textures that Aguayo crumples and crinkles through “El Propio Propio”. Like much of Aguayo’s music, The Tiger highlights the senses, to advance a new sensibility, one that inhabits a fever-dream of hints and clues, a mystery that’s solved by the deep, dark sensuality of the rhythms here, fully in love with the nightlife. It finds its exoticism in unexpected moments, sideways glances, surprising twists and turns. After all, as Aguayo says, “moths are far more glamorous and mysterious than butterflies.”

Sebastian Mullaert is well known for his work as one half of the highly respected Swedish duo Minilogue, responsible for killer releases for the likes of Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels and Wagon Repair, alongside breathtaking live shows as a solo outfit as well as their joint live act with Matthew Jonson.

Working from the idilic setting of the mystical Swedish forest, Sebastian Mullaert has has been making serious waves on his solo artist journey, lending his signature hypnotic sound to labels like Mule Musiq, Drumcode, Minus, Kontra-Musik and Ovum. His one of a kind spellbinding live show is illuminating the world’s finest stages such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Concrete - Paris, Fabric - London, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Black Market - NYC to name a few and can be witnessed on his recent Boiler Room and XLR8R sessions. 

At nearly 13 tantric minutes long, ‘Windmaker’ bubbles and teases with freestyle keys with an almost Middle Eastern flavour, as Mullaert plays snake charmer to his machines, coaxing out deft melodies, airy cymbals and on point beats and percussion.  It’s a track to completely get lost in, crafted with fine sonics and a gloss that only an artist like Mullaert can achieve with ease.

The enigmatic Ukranian producer, Vakula, is drafted in to give a re-interpretation of ‘Windmaker’; edgy phased stabs puncture the minimal techno beat, bouncing and reverberating off the kick drum to create a glorious wall of dubby sound that compliments the original mix a treat.  Vakula has always impressed with his creative and original music for labels like Firecracker, Dekmantel and his own Leleka imprint, so it’s a privilege to have him remix on Hypercolour.

Language is a tricky thing. It’s possible to convey the most beautiful and heartfelt experiences with just a few words but meanings can be lost in translation. Language itself being just a symbol pointing to the actual thing, like fingers pointing to the moon it’s key not to mistake the finger for the actual moon. If you do you might miss all the heavenly glory the finger is pointing to. The map is not the territory.
Kiani & His Legion is back on SoHaSo with the next chapter in his sonic explorations. A mini-album that’s more than the sum of it parts, drawing you in with a story worth to be told. Using a language that doesn’t need to be explained trough words, the symbols merge with their meaning through sound.

The story commences with a female voice whispering gently to you to ‘close your eyes and fly’ and while making your journey don’t forget to ‘breath’. You get introduced to the sturdy drum patterns and eerie string pads that have become main ingredients for Kiani’s soundworld. Eindeloos takes an irresistible groove and badass walking bass winding up between endless flanging spirals.

Oval Flight starts out with the cheeky sound of an electric harp but inside it hides a seed that sprouts to enormous proportions. Beneath the beauty you can feel something sweltering, wanting to expose itself. It links back to the beginning and finally lifts you off with a grand gesture. If You Remember Me Then I Don’t Care If Everyone Else Forgets, uses haunting atmospheres that remind of 80’s science fiction or the eerie vibes found in Twin Peaks to provide safe landing ground beneath the feet after your flight.

L.O.V.E. forms an appropriate conclusion to the story, reflecting with a melancholic chord progression, soul healing choirs and the phonetic symbols ‘Lima, Oscar, Victor, Echo’ repeating till infinity.
