The following track is a great example of modern EBM with a nostalgic touch to the synths of the 1980s. "Dream System" teleports you into a scene of a mysterious oldschool horror movie.

David J Bull is a Cardiff based DJ and producer. He has been a key player in the Welsh underground scene for the last 10 years co-running the TEAK and Studio 89 parties which have gained a cult following over the years. As a DJ, David has honed his sets around his obsession with rough and ready 80s electronic music mixed with contemporary sounds that also tap into this nostalgia - in particular the sounds of industrial, new wave, synth pop and new beat. For his debut EP 'Body & Beat', David nods in particular towards the New Beat sounds that emerged and vanished between '88-'90. Tapping into the brash production style and old school cut and paste sampling, this EP takes inspiration from artists like Fatal Error and Shakti. David pulls together a collage of sound sources and mixes it in with FM synths, bass guitar and Cheetah drum samples (a budget drum machine made in Cardiff back in the 80s) - the result is a dark and somewhat wacky electronic record ready for an alternative dancefloor.

Second instalment in the Dummy Hand mix series comes from David J Bull, known across Wales and the Southwest through the infamous TEAK parties as well as his recent tape out on DKA featuring razor sharp EBM cuts. This mix is definitely in a similar ilk, rare, old, freaky and heavy EBM all across this special two hour mix.

DUMMY MIX 002: David J Bull

David J Bull is the co-founder of the infamous TEAK parties which have brought the likes of DJ Sprinkles, Young Marco, Andrew Weatherall, Sassy J and many more to the Welsh capital over the last decade. David recently released a Belgian new beat inspired EP on the Atlanta tape label DKA Records and is set to release more new music over the coming months. As a DJ, David is best known for playing anywhere between post-punk and EMB but is equally happy to indulge in everything from Italo, Trance and House. This mix for Carpe Noctem features slow paced chug and low slung synth pop sleeve for a mix that slowly builds in energy, weirdness and chuginess!

The record tours through four razor sharp EBM and New Beat tracks, packed with squelchy trance leads, marching drums and dread laden basslines — looking not for a second summer of love but rather an edge into the darker months ahead.

As the co-founder of Studio 89, @teak_music parties, and Cardiff-staple
@paradisegardencdf, David is a prolific guy, to say the least. If that wasn’t
enough, he’s also been producing a steady stream of late 80’s Belgium-nodding
releases, like the excellent “Body & Beat” on @dka_records and his most recent,
“The Energy EP,” on Dummy Hand. Recorded live at Paradise Garden, DJB’s
mix bridges these elements of the darker motifs while always infusing a balance
of the old and present day that he does so well in his own releases. Thrilled to
have him on and for taking the time to do this mix.

The Energy

It was hard to see what was really there, lurking between the shadows. The darkness tended to conceal a world of mystery and haunting truths – invisible forces which danced between the black.

Wandering amongst the trees, they would occasionally catch a glance or a glimmer of a face or a memory lost to the wooded place. It would never stick around for long…

The night was eerie and still, the branches shrouded this part of the world in secrecy and whimsy.

The invisible forces lived here, all of them.

David J Bull features on Volume One of a new compilation series from Paradia – this track caught our ear, a lumbering groove with ominous undertones.

The fourth mix in our series comes from none other than David James Bull. Originating from Plymouth, Dave has been a key player in the renowned Cardiff based Teak parties, as well as being involved in Studio 89's intricate disco's and their newly formed record label.

Mr Bull is no stranger to the scene and his events have been highly regarded across the country, and have included some of our favourite artists such as Daniele Baldelli & Young Marco. We have been lucky enough to have seen Dave perform in Plymouth and Bristol and it is fair to say his music selection is second to none.

With Studio 89's fifth year anniversary party fast approaching, it gives us great pleasure to present Dave’s mix to you. Expect moody Post-Punk/EBM sounds, Italo relief, luscious house vibes and a Savages track for good measure. Enjoy!

throughout; all tainted with a sense of dream state otherworldliness. Dream

Especially lovely to have Dave and Esther bring the first mix of

Last year David contributed his epic 'Dream Terran' to our Free Download Series. After putting this out we asked if he would be keen on putting together a New Beat inspired mix for this series and here it is...

This 2 hour recording is a mix of New Beat, New Wave, Disco / Not Disco and Synth Pop. It feels quite special to us, as it is the sound we would regularly hear early doors at David's TEAK parties. In fact, listening to this mix we both immediately said how it felt like walking downstairs into TEAKS home - The Jacobs Antique Market Basement.

It was through attending these parties that much of our musical taste was shaped, and still today we regularly reminisce about some of the sets we witnessed at TEAK. So it feels great to finally have David representing the crew on our Podcast Series with a typically distinctive set.
