A Lesson Learnt - extract

David J Roch has won over the respect of many of his peers by possessing an almost supernatural vocal range and for writing music that is darkly romantic and heartbreakingly honest.

His soon to be released debut album was produced by Jim Sclavunos (The Bad Seeds/Grinderman) and is a collection of compositions of epic sweep. Whether set against a backdrop of lush orchestration, stark electronic ambience or thrumming crescendos, Roch’s voice compels and mesmerizes as it leaps from sonorous baritione to soaring falsetto.

He has supported bands such as British Sea Power, I Am Arrows and The Smoke Fairies, both on his own and with his full band and has made a lasting impression on each audience. In the lead up to the release of the album, David J Roch has made an EP of tracks taken from his debut masterpiece – only he has stripped them back, raw and acoustic, much like his current live set. He has also made a series of videos to accompany the release of the EP. The tracks he’s chosen to perform are all live favourites.

Peace With The Devil is the first track that he recorded in these sessions and does not feature on the EP. It was recently filmed in David’s father’s back garden and over looks the city of Sheffield:

A Bill Withers track I performed for the latest BEF album DARK, featuring such artists as Boy George, Sandie Shaw, Kate Jackson, Shingai Shoniwa and Polly Scattergood. I was asked to perform this by fellow sheffield musician Martyn Ware (Heaven 17, Human League).

It is quite a way from my comfort zone, especially once the disco beat kicks in halfway through, but an experience that I enjoyed thoroughly.

Formed from the remains myself after everything around me came crashing down. I fell out of love with music for a good 6 months and think that the world may well have fallen out of love with me. After 6 months of falling over words and melodies in my mind I started to write and perform again, first solo, then with a drummer and eventually with a full band. The songs I wrote and still write are chapters from my life put to music to allow me to make sense of what I have done and what I will do. I hope that this has given you an insight into why i perform and play, until we meet again this is a very humble David; saying goodbye. take care.x
