In 1976, writing for Britain's "Blues & Soul" magazine in New York, I had my first encounter with (Ronzoni)  Luther Vandross, then the founder of a five-man group newly signed to Atlantic Records' Cotillion imprint.  With a few weeks, I discovered that Luther and I were neighbours, living in adjacent buildings on West 56th St.  It was the start of a personal and professional connection that lasted until Luther had a stroke in 2003, just weeks after our last conversation in preparation for the release of what would be his last album, "Dance With My Father."  Over those two-and-half-decades, we had many conversations and I got to know a little more about the man who was unquestionably the preeminent black male vocalist of the '80s, '90s and beyond..  Here's the first of a number of audio slices about our longtime association from my works-in-progress musical memoirs, "The Diary Of A British Soul Man"...

David Nathan is the London-born founder of SoulMusic.com and a renowned soul music historian.  He began his writing career in 1965 and beginning in 1967, he became a regular contributor to Blues & Soul magazine in London before relocating to the U.S. in 1975 where he served as U.S. editor for the publication for several decades.  From 1988 to 2004, David wrote prolifically for Billboard and penned bios for hundreds of artists including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Luther Vamdross, Usher and Dionne Warwick among many others.  He’s the author of two books including the acclaimed, “The Soulful Divas” (1999).

He's produced and written liner notes for box sets (Earth, Wind & Fire, Curtis Mayfield, etc.) and reissue CDs for over a thousand projects, including series for his own Ichiban Soul Classics and Ambassador Soul Classics imprints.  David returned to London in 2009 where he now oversees the activities of the globally-known SoulMusic.com website (which features many of the articles he wrote in the '70s) as well as the UK's leading soul music reissue label, SoulMusic Records (SMR), with over one hundred titles in its catalog of classic recordings by legendary artists.   He’s currently writing his musical memoirs, “The Diary Of A British Soul Man.”
