We recorded this piece with the help of Robert Story. This melody is by L. Nella Sweet titled "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" dated 1867. Written in memory of the many who gave their lives during the Civil War. Today, we remember that date as "Memorial Day" here in the USA, as now includes all the many hundreds of thousand lives given by the defenders of our country and other nations who pursue freedom as we know it. We humbly offer this prayer to the many who offer their lives for our "Freedoms". May you take a moment as you listen to pray for the families of the heroes who serve here in the USA and in your own nation.

While the dedication of the printed score from Mrs. Sweet is to the ladies who helped her decorate the graves, and thus beginning a movement of "decoration day" or remembrance, or memorial, even before the brutal civil war was over, the initial poem and lyrics of the "hymn" is written in memory of the many, including the families of all who served and paid the ultimate price of service "Confederate Dead", according to her requested to her publisher in New Orleans of the script on the cover of her composition. There are many historical commentaries of her efforts, Duke University for example, that give credit to her dedication to make "decoration day" a holiday. What a remarkable American!  On May 5, 1868, just about a year after her publication, Gen. John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, officially proclaimed the holiday, and on May 30 of that year, flowers were first placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. This particular transcription for Violin and Cello was created to recognize the first "Memorial Day" at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, after the terrorist attacks of 911, to remember the heroes who served our nation then. The melodic meter has been change and the harmonic structure rendered to create a soulful effect; created to play on the ample acoustic resonance of the High Museum of Arts' Robinson Atrium. Mrs. Sweet's acts have transformed our nation, have unified our nation, have blessed our nation since. War likely will never end, and her dedication will thus live for as long as we too also dedicate each year a day of remembrance. What a beautiful gift she gave us!

Laureate poet and scholar Benito Del Pliego, Premio Internacional de Poesia "Gabriel Celaya" (2003), and David Pineda-Huezo collaborated on this Oratorio. David was inspired by the ingenuity of the Del Pliego's poems and composed music to illustrate in sounds what Del Pliego painted in words. These are a few excerpts from the World Premier in 2001.
