Truancy Volume 308: Polygonia

Two events, seven months apart: Rrose is first introduced to the world via Sandwell District, and the label proclaims its demise. In the intervening months, the seemingly new producer releases three gargantuan 12″s and a double pack of variations on American artist Bob Ostertag’s Buchla 200E recordings. Though it eventually becomes clear that Rrose is the new project of a veteran producer, information remains scarce, which seems to be half the point: removing the stage presence and identity of the performer, creating an immersive atmosphere, and questioning techno’s gender norms all seem to be crucial parts of the Rrose story. Setting up her own label, Eaux, Rrose has continued to prove himself a remarkable producer, melding interests in 20th century music with impeccable sound design. This weekend, Rrose will headline the inaugural edition of Sustain-Release in upstate New York: the festival’s psychedelic bent and mountainous location fitting perfectly with the artist’s surrealist, tripping techno. We caught up with Rrose for a brief chat about gender and presence, and she sent us a sterling mix of mind-bending techno.

A Berlin luminary and a serial dreamer DJ and producer, @toxido-mask is known to execute a synaesthetic experience that makes one dissolve on the dancefloor. MindTrip Podcats episode 27 welcomes one of Serbia's finest Techno exports Filip Xavi. He is one of the authentic representatives of Belgrade's Techno scene the last decade. He's been a rebel against any genre/trend confinements since the day he got involved into techno music and he was mostly attracted by dark and abstract music structures. Dasha Rush remixed his debut vinyl EP on Sonntag Morgen in 2015 and his music has been published on various labels like Dynamic Reflection, Subsist, Decoder Recordings and his very own imprint Teskoba Recordings. The past few years he's been resident at the Drugstore club in Serbia and he has hosted names like Rodhad, DVS1, Dasha Rush, Surgeon, Oscar Mulero, Blawan and more. Until today he continues to pursue his mission of taking the audience into the uncharted territory of sound and space, an approach that fills the dancefloor with mystique and suspense on a path to catharsis. One last mix to end the year. When Svreca sent me this set, he could not have known what it would mean to me. I have spent so much time looking back lately, reliving old discussions and re-imagining moments passed, often lamenting how much was lost along the way. In just under three hours this mix communicates the flow of years. An archived recording from a special memory, it reminds me that the passage of time is beautiful even in what it fades away. Listening to it, I become lost completely, as though I am everywhere at once.

Thank you to everyone who listened this year, who sent warm messages and left comments, who supported us and kept us feeling connected. Thank you to the artists who continue to give their time and trust to the podcast and label, and keep us moving forward.
