Black Milk Lecture RBMA 2006

To celebrate the WFMU Record Fair, kicking off in NYC today, we've dug back into the digital archives (courtesy of Noah Uman), for an hours worth of Lord Finesse interview and a live DJ Mix. This all went down back in October 2011, for the last live show for Coffee Break For Heroes & Villains out of their New Jersey HQ. We were in the building with K-Def, Redefinition Records, and DJ O.Gee. 

Slice Of Spice will be running a table for all 3 days of the Record Fair (Fri-Sun), and we'll be joined at our table by DJ Amir (180 Proof) and legendary owner of Fat Beats records, DJ Jab, and both are bringing vinyl. As for us...we'll be giving out some free vinyl, and debuting some exclusives. Head to our listening station to be the first people in the world to listen to the D.I.T.C. WFMU Radio - Lord Finesse Interview & DJ Set (10.6.11) - 1 HOUR SESSION!

Last year I was lucky enough to go to Punk Rock Bowling in the historic down town Las Vegas.
The line up is an eclectic mix of punk rockers and one of the main attractions with the original rebel, the first female to do rock'n'roll who is still playing to full rooms in Vegas almost 60 years later Wanda Jackson.
Seeing opportunity to talk to one of my musical and personal idols I harassed her management and was allowed 20 minutes with Wanda, an hour later we were still chatting...she spoke of her days with Elvis Presley with a romantic sparkle in her eye, her plan to take on the music industry, gushed over her experience working with Jack White, reminisced on the old days in Vegas, chatted about fashion and advised a sniffly, sick me to take care of myself.
I didn't edit this too much as I love the raw energy to it.
This is the first of I hope many of my 'dream come true' moments and an opportunity to inspire and educate.

This week, Peter and Dharmic sat down with Detroit's Black Milk to talk about leaving the D, opening up for Lloyd Banks for his first ever concert, and the infamous "No Fly Zone." Brownsville's I.O.D. also came to the station to talk about ebola, both the pandemic and his most recent song.

With a career which includes network TV and radio, newspapers, national magazines, internet and podcasts, Tom has wined, dined and interviewed thousands of musicians! Oregon has known him from his years as a Producer/Reporter on OPB’s Oregon Art Beat show. He wrote for the Oregonian newspaper from 1997 to 2009 and is now a DJ on KMHD Jazz Radio.

For over 40 years, Tom has been collecting behind-the scenes stories in music, dining from New York to Portland, and was inspired to learn to cook his favorite Buster Holmes’ Red Beans and Rice recipe in New Orleans. Recipe: Tom D’Antoni / Buster Holmes’ Red Beans and Rice – with Tom’s Tweaks!

2 pounds Red Beans
1-2 medium onions, chopped
½ green bell pepper, chopped
1 pound smoked ham hock
3 cups sauterne
2 teaspoons hot sauce (keep adding it through cooking to taste)
1-2 cloves garlic
½ stick margarine
Salt & Pepper to taste

1 pot of rice – cooked 

Soak washed, rock-free beans, covered in sauterne, or alternative “cheap” wine overnight. Tom says the cheaper the better, because it’s not as filtered!

In a large pot, cover beans with water, or alternatively use the sauce you soaked them in overnight as part of the liquid. Add chopped onions, bell pepper, ham hock and garlic. Cook on low for 5 hours.  Stir about once per hour, adding hot sauce to taste as you go. 

Prep and serve over rice.  Any kind of rice will do!

Tom’s Tips:
•	Invite guests to arrive about an hour before the dish is done. 
•	The cheaper the wine, the better. Can use cheap beer as a sub.
•	Don’t invite your girlfriend over to watch an episode of a freaky food show you produced if you want a girlfriend after she has watched the show!

Welcome to On The Beat Podcast #001.  In this episode, we pay tribute to Hip Hop's unsung champions... The Beatnuts:  Psycho Les, Juju, and former member Fashion (aka Cool Ass Fash, who later became Al Tariq after leaving the group.)  The Beatnuts have provided classic material with lyrics and production since the early Nineties, but their Hip Hop lineage goes back way further  than that.  Formerly known as the Beat Kings, they found themselves becoming DJs because of their love of Hip Hop.  While digging, The Beatnuts ran into Afrika Bambaataa (one of the founders of Hip Hop.)  Bambaataa introduced The Beatnuts to the Native Tongues (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Monie Love) and their career took off.  The Beatnuts started their production credits with such artists as Stereo MCs, Common (sense), Fat Joe, Chi Ali and Monie love. Their beatmaking evolved into creating production for their own vocals.  Their music, their contribution, their part in Hip Hop history is very import, so On The Beat would like to show how much we love them with our podcast tribute.
