My Best Beloved

"He Will Not Answer" from THE DA VINCI PROJECT (working title)

Our concept musical, The da Vinci Project (working title), explores the human desire to be associated with someone’s genius, or even co-opt it for personal gain. More specifically, we intertwine four stories - two from the Italian Renaissance and two contemporary - as they relate to the life and genius of Leonardo da Vinci (whom we never see in the musical, preferring him to remain as elusive as his genius). In this submission, we will explore two of these stories, loosely based on actual events. 

Isabella d’Este became the Regent of Mantua when her husband was captured by the French in 1509. Knowing her reign will not last forever, and knowing how society regards (and disregards) women, she looks for a more certain form of immortality and power. She summons da Vinci to Mantua to finally complete a portrait of her (records show he had previously sketched her in 1499-1500). When da Vinci does not show, she is devastated. She reflects on watching the artist work.

Isabella corresponds to Friar Pietro di Novellera, Leonardo da Vinci’s administrative assistant, insisting da Vinci paint a portrait of her. When the Friar is unmoved by Isabella’s demands, Isabella announces she will visit the genius herself.

David Sisco is performer, writer and voice teacher living in New York City. He currently teaches voice at Marymount Manhattan College. He is the Founder & Curator of The Directory of Contemporary Musical Theatre Writers, located online at www.contemporarymusicaltheatre.com. He has been an active member of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop, where he met his collaborator of 10 years, Tom Gualtieri.
