Basement Love - Tokyo Beach

Ultramajic goes for the jugular with the second chapter of its Metaphysix series after Aden and Creepy Autograph's first installment won over many new hearts in 2013 (particularly with the much-buzzed about "Whip") while keeping existing acolytes very happy.

Inspired in equal parts by legends of early Detroit music and arcane philosophical-religious concepts, these are savage drum tracks slimmed down to their meanest and leanest states - dance music at an elemental level, pure rhythmic bliss that would do past drum machine wizards like Plastikman very proud while sitting nicely alongside modern operations like Night Slugs' Club Constructions series. It's no surprise, then, that Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 makes an appearance here under his Dance System alias with the rugged "RZ1", effortlessly bridging the gap between forward UK styles and vintage Detroit soul. Matrixxman steps up to the plate in a big way with the hard drum rolls of "Simulation" and two different incarnations of the jacking, rimshot-crazy "Stop It". Creepy Autograph is back for his second appearance in the Metaphysix series with a ferocious remix of "Simulation" while Lando (formerly Lando Kal) rounds things out with "Loveplay", adding soulful vox and bouncing synths to the machinelike motif.

All in all this a lethal set of no-frills, drum machine-inspired workouts that demonstrate the "less is more" maxim with sterling results, revealing each artist to be a virtuoso of rhythm and Edgar to be a consummate curator. Complete with magickal cover art by Jimmy Edgar and Pilar Zeta reportedly made while traveling in Egypt, there is indeed much magic to be mesmerized by here.

Following two EP releases on Delusions Of Grandeur the time felt right for thatmanmonkz to get working on his debut LP. The Sheffield b-boy is no newcomer to production having been releasing music since the mid-noughties but has seen a definite rise in interest the last few years following essential releases on his own Shadeleaf label as well as remixes and productions for the likes of Classic, Kolour LTD and Kon’s StarTime.

With his first musical love being Hip Hop it’s easy to understand how his approach to house turns out so refreshing. Inevitably MPC’s, big, bold samples, Jay Dee inspired grooves and a raw, underproduced sound all play a big part and never one to shy away from an interesting collaboration he has enlisted the skills of several vocalists including Detroit MC Ta‘raach (whose credits include Slum Village and Jill Scott), Erik Rico (collabs include Ron Trent and DJ Spinna), Khalil, Dave Aju, Pete Simpson (as A Brother Is...) and Malik Ameer.

Things kick off with a low-slung soul jam entitled Air featuring Kahil Anthony complete with sparkling Rhodes arps and a dub-wise bassline underpinning a beautifully lazy groove. Jus Anutha Wunna Deez follows with a rough and ready house jam that clearly doffs its cap to those old Sound Signature and Mahogoni Music releases we know and love so much. Next up we have Boogie Down with Erik Rico rocking some Parliament inspired vocal business bringing the feelgood vibes to this rolling P-Funker. Some Ol’ Nex’ Ish goes for a jazz samba meets house fusion whilst A Fly New Tune goes strictly old school with a classic combo of dusty break, filtered fusion rhodes n bass sample, movie dialogue snippets and a masterful flow delivered by Ta’raach. Dave Aju steps up next on Turn It Out laying down a unison vocal refrain to compliment the bumping disco groove complete with a call and response section for some singalong party participation!

As we continue, Another Night Under The Glitterball sees thatmanmonkz back in familiar territory with a rock solid, deep jazz-house jam. On I Can Hardly Breathe we’re treated to a downtempo gospel-infused affair which leads us perfectly into the most bumpy club- friendly track of the LP For Bae. Moon On The Hill is a collaboration with Italian DJ Kali and his Raw Standard crew and treats us to some distinctly mid 90’s Kruder and Dorfmeister vibes to zone out to before heading off in an altogether more bonkers, psychedelic dancehall direction on Vampires. Baked is another classy thatmanmonkz take on Hip Hop featuring Malik Ameer on the mic. Take U 2 My House sounds like something Prince might have made in the mid-80’s if he’d just come off a 3 day bender at Panorama Bar. And closing the show in perfect style and fashion we have For Those I’ve Lost Along The Way which is a blunted yet beautifully optimistic number that has echoes of Lonnie Liston Smith and a brilliant spiritual vocal sample which provides the perfect closer to an amazing debut LP.

For the latest release on Rob da Bank’s dance focussed imprint Silver Bear Recordings, longtime collaborators Krywald & Farrer have turned in a three track EP. The Percolate residents are well respected across London for their exemplary skills behind the decks, and the wonderfully titled ‘Top Pocket Persies’ EP is evidence their talent also extends to the studio. Today we premiere the lead track, ‘Spoon Billed Sandpiper’.

‘Spoon Billed Sandpiper’ is testament to the duo’s keen understanding of songwriting. The song begins with a meditative drum pattern, which grows more propulsive as pads begin to swirl around it. An early breakdown is accompanied by a heart torn vocal sample before the beat comes back in, sounding even more frenetic to ensure to send the floor into raptures.

1 year after his gorgeous "Straight ahead" Ep, Tony Lionni gets back on Goldmin Music with a softer and deeper one "A photograph of you".
A very distinctive and insightful ep about the passing of time including plainly heartbreaking house tracks as he did so well up to now.
We've been amazed by Tony's music since the beginning as whatever he does, there's always a promise of something unexpected and a high dreaming potential..
That's what it's all about. House music for the 21st century, more conscious and lucid than ever with a hunk of optimism and faith in what the future can bring.

This musical tale starts with the unmistakable "Remember back when".. As it's name suggests, it might be an ideal flashback track, bringing back a warm and stained 90's vibe.
However, Tony is the master of evoking both the familiar and exploring the unknown, feeding your sense nostalgia while simultaneously inspiring visions of a hopeful future
As always, it's a perfect balance between dreamscape and reality as that irresistible groove deserves a very physical reaction, the urge to dance while it slowly brings out your inner-child.

"There's no future in the past" continues in a more ear-catching way thanks to his perfect straightforward arpeggio constantly pushing you combined with a round, dry and heavy bass quickly elevating the track to it's cruise altitude. The perfect example of a contemporary different dancefloor tune. 

"Together" brings your imagination back on track. Probably more abstract and hypnotic nonetheless it's power will be all the stronger.  It feels like a wonderful 6 minutes playground experience, high in the sky, a representational, half-conscious musical trip that makes your mind wonder.

The night sky held a humble elegance as feathers flapped in the breeze. The moon bird was illuminated by the glow of the white orb from up above. Down below the earth whizzed past with a flash as the cries of the evening echoed between city streets. A long flight would see the bird travel North, away from this place and towards distant lands. There was a cool chill in the midnight hour despite the ruthless warmth of the summer months. Little could deter the progress of the bird amidst the ominous dark. 

Abe is set to release a gorgeous sun kissed EP on ROIT Records. The release features an array of elegant house purpose built for tropical climates.

@interstate98's first release on @waxtefacts was ‘Vanice Beach’, a funky roller that owes as much to disco as the club. He’s followed that up in perfect fashion with a solo EP for the label.

Kicking that EP off is ‘Karl-Löwe-St. Groove (ft. Biroll)’, a track that opens with melancholy piano before erupting in a blaze of searing disco samples packed to the rafters with funk and groove. It’s one for peak-time dancefloor destruction.

Kyoku Records slid onto the scene last June with Ethyene‘s remarkably heady Obsessions EP. One year and a couple EPs later (from the likes of Dorsi Plantar and Long Island Sound) and we arrive at their fourth release: Sune‘s 8 Till Late. If there’s one thing the Melbourne-run house  imprint has demonstrated in their fresh run, it’s the ability to scope upcoming talent and cultivate polished EPs fitting their stylistic vein. The Kyoku sound could be described as a sample-based melange of bright, deep and sometimes whimsical moods. It’s like staring into a goddamn tropical sunset.

Sune, who recently made his vinyl debut on a sweet V/A from Lagaffe Tales, is of course part of High Hat Appreciation Society – a dope little collective of DJs and producers. On his first full EP, the Malmo man brings his approach of dusty beats and delectable sample flips in full. The B-side hosts the harder-going disco looper « Pistachio Sour » and its remix from Fouk’s ever-dope Daniel Leseman. Meanwhile, A-Side showcases the laidback and effortlessly groovy sounds of the label and producer, which brings us to our premiere.

While the lead track strolls along with a delectable jazz guitar sample and a big warm bassline, the title track, « 8 Till Late » explores paradisiacal territory. A crackling sample/machine layered drum beat backs the intro, with a tropical xylophone slowly filtering into the fray. When the full action is finally unleashed, a bouncy bassline joins perfectly with the riffing mallet instrumentation, a subtle rhythm guitar and sweet string stabs to create a heady summertime jam.

8 Till Late looks to be a warm weather sureshot for those of us in the northern hemisphere. The record should be hitting stores early next month and is available to preorder on Juno.

Young Bordeaux-based producer Leon Revol found support from the likes of Move D with his 2016 debut EP for Monologues Records 'Clear Definition'. Following releases on Secret Reels and Future Disco, he returns with another stunning collection of tracks that are considerably beyond his years. 'Pink Coffee' and 'Sun Is The Place' see him work pleasingly warm synth lines over organic percussion, 'Embers' channels more sunshine with its summery guitar licks and 'Birds' shows his depth wth a non-dancefloor workout reminiscent of Floating Points.
