Purple Haze

A short, theatrical piece for solo bassoon, I wrote "Lurch" to perform a Dada themed banquet presented by the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation in May 2016. It is dedicated to Judy Millar, who was the artistic director for this fantastic event (also featuring food by Peter Gordon!).

I was watchin' total crap on TV 
absent family and friends on my mind
I thought misunderstandings and hurt feelings 
are supposed to heal with time

as you pulled loves daggers out of me
you said the only thing that really matters
is love.. and it comes for free
you could cover me in platinum or dust me off with gold
or you could cast me in solid silver..but all I want..is

yeah I'm the world's most successful loser
you'll probably ever see
but just as long as you are here with me
I feel I've won first prize... I feel like I...
won the lottery.. I've found my pot of gold..
I've finally hit the jackpot.. I've found my treasure trove

I don't have a lot of fancy thing but I'm happy with what I got
I prefer a plain cheeseburger to one with the lot
havin' it all ain't all it's cracked up to be
it's the simple things matter the most
livin' in the here and now with the one you love
hold them close
