My second Black+Light show on Fnoob Techno Radio, and last show for 2016, thanks for listening, I appreciate your support.

A much darker and brutal sounding show/mix than the previous one, going hard and heavy to end off the year. Loving the broken beat techno sounds, as you'll hear for the first 20 minutes, then into the solid hard beats and rising intensity.

I like moving forward with techno music, so you won't hear a best of 2016 retrospective here, just lots of very recent releases, from producers whose music I've discovered and loved this year, such as... As is often my process, I leave everything till the last minute, running on stress and panic for drive. This show almost didn't happen. There were a few frustrating failed attempts, but it came together last night, working on it until 3am, slept, woke, and recorded it at 8am before work, then uploaded it for broadcast later the same day. They say you suffer for your art.

Back in March, I played at my first outdoor bush doof party. These parties usually feature a lot of Psy-Trance music, this one was all about Techno! Trench goes DooF w/ Nihad Tule (Sloboda/Sweden)

This party was held on a private property, in remote country Southern Highlands NSW, over 3 days, 2 nights, deep in the Australian bush, about 2+1/2 hours drive from Sydney. The performer lineup included a whole heap of Sydney's Techno talents.

As I like to do, I played a range of Techno sounds: big, bass heavy, broken beats, percussive, harder intensity, deep, dark, sinister atmospheres, going on a journey, into some deeper hypnotic territory, a little acid, with some melodic moments too, before climaxing at the end. I also included some tracks with creepy, sci-fi, alien encounter/abduction, and creatures of the darkness vibes, to suit the location.

This 1 hour show/mix features many of the same tracks I played at the party, during my 2 hour set at 3am, inspired by the location and experience. It was a lot of fun playing Techno music at high volume, with loads of bass, through a fantastic sound system, out into the Australian bush.

Quite a different sounding show/mix for this month's Black+Light. 

This show/mix probably has a lot more black, than light, dark, very dark, and brutal at times. Featuring more Electro, EBM and Industrial type sounds than my previous shows/mixes and performances. Where usually I would balance with light and melodic, here I kept things dark.

In part, this show/mix is influenced and inspired by my friend Lauren, DJ Loveless @loveless-sounds and her excellent taste in music, recent mixes and performances here in Sydney.

Starting the show with some amazing, lush, evolving, epic, atmospheric, moody and darkly melodic, Electro productions from an alias of C-System. I don't usually like to play the same producer's tracks all in a row, but they all flowed together so perfectly here, with a fantastic Umwelt remix.

Awesome to see The Mover back. Memories of nights out raving, dancing to his dark techno tracks: Waves Of Life and Nightflight (Nonstop To Kaos) in the early 90's. 

I was also excited and inspired by excellent brand new music from Codex Empire, Lars Huismann, Headless Horseman, and I Hate Models, producers I love to support and play.

All the other producers in this show/mix are new to Black+Light: Cassegrain, The Mover, Irregular Synth, Star-Kid, DJ Hell, Marcel Dettmann, Echaskech and Parallx. Most happy to have finally found a great fit for Phase Fatale, and Alexey Volkov too, with their latest productions.

I'm extremely pleased with how well Echaskech's -  Emperor's New Clones, and the fantastic 80's style remix Marcel Dettmann did of DJ Hell's - I Want U, both progressed and layered together in this mix, a happy accident, magic combination.

Finishing with the awesomely epic, Cyanure Dance from I Hate Models. Fantastic production work, love the contrasting elements, harsh and melodic. You get the full 9 minutes here, the Fnoob Techno Radio broadcast version of this show/mix had to lose the last 3 minutes to fit the hour.

I noticed I used the word happy quite a bit here. Seems the wrong word for such dark music, but I've always had this thing where, I'm most happy when the music isn't.

Edit: 27 August 2017, I like to listen to my own mixes often, on re-listens to this one, there were some transitions in the 2nd half I wasn't totally happy with. So, I recorded a better version a few weeks back, and have replaced the audio file here now. Apologies for no new Black+Light show last month, June. I was away in Europe on holiday. Visiting London, Paris, Barcelona, Budapest, Vienna, and Berlin. 

I saw Depeche Mode [Live] in London and Berlin, fantastic! Reconnected with much missed old friends, and made many new ones too. Did a whole lot of clubbing all through the holiday, in Paris and Barcelona, and 3 amazing weekends in Berlin, there spent mostly in clubs: Berghain and Griessmühle, with a visit to Tresor too.

Techno, techno, techno! Much fun was had!

Now back home in Sydney, it's winter, back at work, post-holiday depression kicking in...

This show/mix came together really quite quickly, selected a bunch of brand new tracks, a rough order in mind, and just went for it, hit record and into the mix I went. Not as planned out, programmed, post reviewed, re-recorded, and edited as I often do with my shows/mixes. 

I think it turned out alright. Definitely some musical inspiration from my European clubbing adventures: Solid beats, deep, dark atmospheres, harder, percussive intensity, with some melodic light too, a bit of a journey.

I was booked to do a DJ set at a secret, outdoor, suburban, party here in Sydney last Saturday night: Rivet X, but unfortunately police shut it down before I got to play, which was frustrating, it was building nicely, growing crowd, great vibes... Typical Sydney nanny/police state overreaction. 

This show/mix is similar to what you would have heard from my Rivet X set, I hope you enjoy!

I'm back! This new Black+Light 008 show/mix, is a post party recording, of the DJ set I played at Sydney underground club The Bunk3r, for the Rivet / Big Ting Recordings crew, on a Thursday night last month. Playing between Matt Lush and Monako B2B N-Va.

The Bunk3r is my favourite club space in Sydney right now. An actual underground club, comfortably cool and dark, minimal red lighting, friendly staff, great vibes, and most importantly a fantastic sounding Funktion One sound system. It was a pleasure to play through it.

I wasn't sure what to expect crowd/vibe wise, being a Thursday night, but it ended up being a whole lot of fun. A decent size crowd of young, up for it, energetic and vocally appreciative, music focused crew, guys and girls ripping it up on the dance floor, many thanks!

I wanted this DJ set to be fun, energetic, quickly flowing, keeping the interest high, with drops and changes, and more on the accessible side of underground techno sounds. Not getting too hard or dark, but keeping a good pace and bottom heavy pressure. I think variety is important too, so there are a range of sounds here, some atmospheric, deeper and melodic moments, and a few rough edges.

Apologies for going M.I.A for the last couple of months, had some issues, all is well now. My previous Black+Light 007 show/mix has been getting some re-plays.

Happy New Year!! Hope you all survived Xmas, the silly season, holidays intact. Welcome to 2018, here's my first Black+Light show for Fnoob Techno Radio, of the year,

This show/mix is a 1 hour section from my DJ set on New Years Eve, playing 12am-2am, at .darkroom Luscious Fuxxx NYE, held at The Bunk3r Sydney (which is sadly no more).

Recorded yesterday, this section was about 45 mins into my 2 hour DJ set on NYE. Going on a 15 minute journey into some tribal, broken beats, heavy dark electro, and half speed jungle vibes. before returning to the techno, and ramping up the intensity. Big heavy beats, big synths and basslines, having a rave! I hope you enjoy!

Hello! Has it really been 3 months since my last new Black+Light show? Apologies, motivation issues, and time keeps passing me by. There have been show/mix attempts during that time, but nothing I was genuinely happy with enough to share, until now. 

This show/mix, is a DJ set I put together to play at the Trench Techno Doof last w/end. Unfortunately I didn't get to play due to the event running way off schedule right from the start, but I stayed for a while and soaked up the vibes (literally).

The party (doof) is held 2-3 hours south of Sydney, outdoors, deep in the Australian bush, in the Southern Highlands. I really enjoyed playing at the Trench Techno Doof last year.

I like the idea of reflecting the environment you're playing in with your music selections, so you'll hear tracks with some electronic emulations of insects and animal noises, sounds from the creepy darkness, unknown things happening in the background, perhaps visitors from other planets.  No ambient, new age music here though, it's techno music!

Compared to previous shows/mixes/sets, this journey is much deeper, spacey, atmospheric, and hypnotic, building in intensity, with some weird, creepy, melodic, and tribal moments, I hope you enjoy the ride.

Bio...

David McCann - 53 years young, a veteran of Adelaide and Sydney (Australia) live band, rave, club, electronic music and party scenes. 

Relocated from Adelaide to Sydney in 1995 with Adelaide/Sydney 90s rap, rock, techno, 6 piece live band - Bliss.

100s of live performances across Australia as keyboard player/songwriter, in dance/rock live bands, late 1980s - late 1990s, as hardware based producer, live performer 'DAMC' (rave, hardcore, techno, jungle, drum'n'bass) 1992 - 1998, and as 'TECHiONE' (funky, melodic, hard, tribal, techno) 1998 - 2005.

Bliss - Live band gigs, with/supporting: The Shamen (UK), Regurgitator, Skunkhour, Def-FX, Renegade Funk Train, Insurge, Sound Unlimited Posse, Caligula, D.I.G, SuperGroove, Swoop, Frenzal Rhomb and more.

Presented Internet radio shows: 'TechFunked' 2000 - 2005, and 'decoded_' 2005 - 2007 with Pulseradio, mixing up fresh weekly techno, electro-clash, minimal, deep/tech-house sounds, as DJ TECHiONE later as DJ David McCann.

Various DJ gigs in Sydney 1999 - 2005, and a few in 2008.

2007 - 2016 took a step back from music producing/performing, DJing. Continued regularly attending, supporting Sydney techno/music club nights and events. Traveling and clubbing interstate & overseas in Europe.

One-off retro rave live performances as DAMC in 2013, 2014 and 2016 in Adelaide, at Flash Back II, Ultraworld NYE 2014, and Party With A Purpose II events.

2016 got inspired by new sounds in techno music, new friends, Sydney techno DJ Loveless (RIP), and starting doing the digital DJ thing, putting mixes together. Invites to DJ out began.

Passionate about a variety of underground techno music sounds: Deep, dark, atmospheric, brutal, heavy, twisted, minimal, broken, hard, light, beautiful, melodic, hypnotic - all depending on mood.

Loving the industrial, EBM, broken beats, heavy and dark atmospheres in modern techno music right now, still a fan of the rave. Not a fan of the new "hard techno" fast techno, tik-tok techno fad.
