Home is a God-forsaken land 
That yanks you out of its canal
And leaves you to rot 

Home is a slice of hell
Marinated with lies 
and glazed with empty promise

Home is absence,
Because every waking minute is a reminder
That its name is merely plastered on a map.
It is non-deserving of status

Home is 40-year-old Korantemaa 
Who couldn’t afford to keep up with the inflation
And had to resort to adding more stress to her bipolar
By working more odd jobs

Home is 5-year-old Ahmad,
Whose smile widened every morning
When he licked chocolate spread off his loaf 
But now has to resort to the hard crust of bread bristling his tongue

Home is 18-year-old Nancy,
Who passed her exams excellently,
But had to give up college
Because her parents couldn’t bear the brunt of her expenses

Home is 45-year-old Agbozo
Who laments to every passenger in his taxi
About his failure to keep up in these dire economic times
His marriage collapsed, because he barely had enough to feed himself

Home is the Clottey residence
That is now planning to buy foodstuffs in advance
To stock up against the obvious economic meltdown
bound to freeze more hope in the coming days.

Home is desire
That things will change
Yet home is knowing;
They never do.

Home is longing,
Our forefathers wished this
Yet home is ego
They became the beasts they feared.

Home is memory,
We can still taste flag-like independence
But home is theatre;
It was all a façade.

Home is shipwreck
We’re headed for nowhere
But we glide on,
It is all we’ve got.

I hunger for a love my country cannot give.
