Strength Within

Collaborating with Rae on Phantom Train was an exciting journey for both of us. 
The fusion of the Scottish legend with the monster concept allowed us to push the boundaries of our creativity and create something truly unique. 
It was a lot of fun to bring these two ideas together, and the process of combining folklore with a monstrous twist was both thrilling and rewarding. Working side by side with Rae on this project felt like crafting a haunting tale full of mystery and imagination, and we’re stoked to finally share it.

THE PHANTOM TRAIN

Crossed Roads

John Henry was just a boy when his father woke him one night, voice low and urgent. "Listen, son, before trouble comes knocking. Learn to swing a hammer, lay a track, dig deep into the earth. And take my hammer—it’ll do anything you tell it to."

Born into hardship, John Henry grew strong. His father broke free from jail a dozen times, his mother nursed a dozen babies, and when sickness came, the doctor would only take his pay a quarter at a time. Steel-driving wages were lean, but John Henry grew up knowing that sweat and muscle built the railroads that kept the country moving.

One day, the section foreman saw the broad-shouldered man standing before him, a hammer in his hand. "You got muscle, boy, but what else can you do?"

John Henry smiled. "I can turn a jack, lay a track, pick and shovel too."

"Can you swing a hammer?"

"Yes sir, I’ll do anything you hire me to."

The foreman scoffed. "Then take that hammer, drive this spike, and let’s see what you’re worth. I’ll pay you a nickel for every inch you sink it."

John Henry raised his steel-nosed hammer high, brought it down with the force of a thunderclap. The spike split the cross-tie in half. "Thirty-five cents a day for driving steel," the foreman muttered. "Sweat, boy, sweat—you owe me two more swings."

John Henry worked with the rhythm of the land, his hammer ringing like a church bell. Folks came from miles around just to watch him drive steel. But soon the bosses laughed, saying, "Your time is done, John Henry. We got a steam drill now. What’ll all that muscle do against a machine?"

John Henry looked them in the eye. "I got little brothers to feed, a baby sister still crawling on her knees. The Lord didn’t say machines should take the place of men. Can an engine fill an empty belly? Can a machine put bread on the table?"
