The Sound Ascending is the story of two lovers, Miriam and Zakir, who come of age in Soviet occupied Afghanistan. Loosely based on Tennessee Williams’ play Orpheus Descending, only two characters exist in the present, Miriam, and her interrogator, Mr. Donovan. As Miriam conjures up memories of days gone by, four singers musically portray all of the characters in the past.
