switzerland 2022

It's been a long time since I've been so excited to perform and meet warm people. 
The last time I was in beautiful Switzerland was 4 years ago. 4 years ago I played one of my first DJ sets and now it should be my second live set. Already then the experience was very formative and enriching, but this time it was a unique experience. 
The few days with the Echoes family were wonderful, I am very grateful for the encounters. Thanks to all who were there.
The whole event was beautifully orchestrated. Wonderful decoration, wonderful people, music as medicine. For me the second live set was over incredibly fast, I was almost like in a kind of trance while playing. Thank you to everyone who danced and was there, you helped create this special space.

La La - Minirig Mix

Stella Zekri (@stella-zekri-ouiddir) is based in Berlin but her sound defies the usual expectations of those who dance in the city best known for house and techno. Her sets instead are instead led by soul and emotion and reach far and wide into the worlds of hip hop, house, new beat, trance, jazz, disco and bring rich colours and exultant vibes to the scene. She often likes to play long sets and isn't afraid of twisting and turning through diverse tempos and rhythms along the way, which is something she also does at the Body Language events she founded with Camilla Rae and Caitlin Russell in 2021. They have brought something all new to the queer scene in Berlin, while her monthly Breakfast Show on Refuge Worldwide and her studio work with 80s zouk and boogie band Stella and the Longos are further creative outlets that make Stella a new school star.  

All of this is reflected in the sixty-minute selection Stella has put together for us this week: it's a celebration of her eclectic collection that is powered by outgoing pianos, emotive vocals and gleeful grooves. There are old school house jams and silky soul-laced depths, happy 90s tracks and plenty of sensuous voices that all prove Stella Zekri's ability to keep the good times flowing is second to none.

Building on the buzz around his dynamic techno releases of the past few years, Sam Goku @samgoku makes a welcome debut on Dekmantel with four striking set pieces which subvert the rules of the average floor fodder.

Through his steady stream of output on the likes of Atomnation Berlin-based Robin Wang has established himself as a must-check artist with an instinct for the unconventional. That comes through in jaw-dropping fashion on Radiants’ opening cut ‘Tides (Under The Moonlight)’, a swirling, mystical thumper which rises with graceful restraint to a thunderous peak. By way of contrast ‘Tanggu FM’ brings things up close and claustrophobic, using slippery sound design and stuttering vocals to create a different kind of maverick energy on top of the rugged low end. Even when he does reach for anthemic hooks on the EP’s title track, there’s a fundamental otherness to the sparkling chords and a toughness to the beat which edges out the competition.

This is just a snapshot of the versatility at work across Radiants, a record which will cement Goku’s position as a standout producer taking a less obvious path to truly distinctive, devastatingly original showstoppers.

Occasionally, a record — or sometimes even a DJ — simply falls out of the sky, like so many unexplained showers of fish, or midnight deliveries of frozen piss from passing jumbo jets. And so it was when DJ Steve first came to our attention in 2011 via Tim Sweeney, who discovered him quite by chance DJing in the Italian seaside town of Tropea. 
Sweeney, on vacation in the area, was so impressed with Steve he passed him his card, telling him to call him if he ever made it to New York. Some time later, DJ Steve did make it to New York, called Sweeney and turned up at the Beats In Space studio, barely speaking any English but with a pile of “DJ Steve special cuts”, white labels and acetates, and laid down an extended mix - “Italian style!”. Then, nobody ever really heard from him again.
Fast forward to Berlin 2013, and the mix had become a staple at the after hours of a small group of friends, including Paramida, who would soon start Love On The Rocks. They called it “the DJ Steve experience”. Paramida counts it as one of her main musical inspirations, saying it showed her another perspective of groove, and turned her perception of dance music “upside down”. And still, nobody seemed to know who he was. speaking any English but with a pile of “DJ Steve special cuts”, white labels and acetates, and laid down an extended mix - “Italian style!”. Then, nobody ever really heard from him again.
Until one day in early 2016, after years of exhausting all her contacts in an effort to track him down, after all the blood, sweat and tears, and countless hours spent interrogating various dance music insiders, Paramida finally received a message. “Minkia, stu pezzu nci spunda u culu e passari!” Whatever that meant, it was instantly clear that her search had come to a conclusion. Despite the near-indecipherable dialect, and other obvious communication problems, Paramida somehow persuaded him to sign two of his “special cuts” for Love On The Rocks, which would soon become the record you now hold in your hands.
As DJ Steve had put it so well: “Dick! This thing could pierce the anus of a sparrow!”. Amen.
