My latest creation: You will be surprised at where this goes. Starring (in video on YouTube link below)my daughter, Eden Reagan Schurmann Brandt in the lead acting role (I had to promise her my entire life fortune in order to get her to do this… LOL); acting against a song I wrote with Jon Beckenstein at Clark U in 1975; and then recorded when I first got to LA with David Resnik at a lower end 8 track studio in 1978; you will next be EVEN MORE SURPRISED by what happens a bit later in this short video!! 

While you are having all this watching adventure; remember that the music has had its own adventure - I added many surprises in themselves to the old 1978 recording here in 2021 - against the only cassette version that I possessed - including inviting the esteemed Russian violinist Natalia Dmukhovskaia to put her 2 cents in - which really moved the song to new territory.  

Thanks for listening.  (A bit of the original recording in a Worcester, MA college apartment can be heard at the very end.) Thankfully, Albert P. Antomattae, from Step Forward Artistry LLC, added his editing and production acumen to the footage I shot working with Eden! Thanks to Ann Schurmann for brainstorming the video idea!

This song is dedicated to our own two wild horses, Eden and Sam, as they launch fully into their adult lives.  May you run like the wind.  May all your dreams come true.  We both love you more than you will ever know. 

To all the parents out there, some of whom have struggled mightily to hold up the sky these last few years, may you find the strength to keep on keeping on, no matter what path your child is on and no matter whether they've stumbled and are struggling to stand back up or are still running toward those bittersweet milestones like first steps and graduations.

More Time, Slower Horses

Loser (Cover, 12-17-23, Arr. by David Brandt)

This started out last March in Florida w a practice guitar and a casio. Along the way, I replaced all the instruments and vocals. Erick Burdette added bass and Ann Schurmann and Erick (both from our Youth Is Wasted combo) added  background vocals. I played all guitars, piano, organ and sang lead vocal. Vito Salvatore Gutilla on fiddle! Albert P. Antomattei, from S.F. Media NJ, was the videographer. Blessed to have him on our team. 

A really fulfilling part of this project for me was the intricate weaving and lacing of the instruments. It really took some time to get it at least closer to where I wanted it. 

Loser, written by Hunter/Garcia, (Jan '72) is a great tune. I hope you'll find this an interesting take on it. Enjoy!

Recorded as part of a 6 song LP I put out after Reeves Nevo and the Cinch disbanded and after a divorce. These were darker but truly felt times. Recorded in Studio B Westlake Audio 24 track in LA w Ed Cherney at the helm. This is a recording off of the LP itself. 

This song features Jonathan Beckenstein on the guitar (who also assisted on lyrics and arrangement/production on this song), Erick Peewee Burdette on the bass, David Doolittle on drums. Erick and I sang harmonies as well.

I first learned and sang this folk song as a camper from ages 8-12.  Over the years I sang it to my own kids.  It just hit me that this children’s song, if slowed down a bit and sang with a tad of pathos, might have a whole other aide to it. So this is what i attempted.  

I am on all instruments on this one and they include guitars, djembra, triangle, marimba, harmonica, glockenspiel, vocals and harmonies. 

"The Titanic" (also known as "It Was Sad When That Great Ship Went Down" and "Titanic (Husbands and Wives)") is a folk song and children's song most known for being sung in the United States at summer camp. "The Titanic" is about the sinking of the RMS Titanic which sank on April 15, 1912 after striking an iceberg.

You can find it on Woody Guthrie on The Asch Recordings, Vol. 1: This Land Is Your Land, Smithsonian Folkways 1999.  Also Pete Seeger and many others did it.

We were lucky enough to be the prom band in the 1982 Universal Movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High - which in its way became a cult classic and will open again in theaters for its 35th anniversary this year! The stars that came out of and that were in this movie were many and it was unusually dense with talent.  Including the costume work of Marilyn Vance!

My ex-wife, then Amy Heckerling (now Amy Israel), had met me while we were playing in our 'original song band' in a 'local dive new wave rock club/bar' called Club 88.  She was not yet directing at this level.  When the movie came up for her, we were offered the opportunity to audition for the legendary Irving Azoff and Art Linson.  We worked hard and got the part - major thanks to Amy for this éntre, for sure!

We went into the A room of Westlake Audio where Michael Jackson later recorded Thriller and it was thrilling to be recorded.  This is a cassette copy of those sessions.  No one has ever released the whole tune - parts of this were used in the movie as some of you will recognize.  We also recorded Life in the Fast Lane and Third World Man in those sessions and they did use parts of Life in The Fast Lane too!  It was funny for us to be playing cover tunes and wearing these outfits, but in retrospect I am SOOOO happy for this gig!  Please enjoy the full recording of this song!

This was a labor of love put together and a “home movie” of sorts!

IN HOTEL NEAR THE MARTIN FACTORY IN NAZARETH, PA, ABOUT TO SAY GOODBYE TO MY ’73 GUITAR FOR 3 MONTHS AS IT NEEDS REPAIR.  IN THE GUITAR CASE I FOUND THIS YELLOWED SONG A TEEN-AGE DAUGHTER OF MY FATHER’S FRIEND TAUGHT ME IN LA WHEN WE VISITED THERE WHEN I WAS 14 - THE YEAR WAS 1969, AND THE SONG SOUNDS LIKE IT.

Further research found:

“The Byrds' I Come and Stand at Every Door is a hypnotic and haunting song, told from the viewpoint of a child incinerated at Hiroshima. ... The lyrics are adapted from a poem by the celebrated Turkist poet Nazim Hikmet – spoken from the viewpoint of a seven-year-old child incinerated at …”

Buckets of Rain (Cover, David Brandt, Ann Schurmann, Dan Kiely and Ken Rachlin, 11/11/18)

Dan Kiely came up w a clever/unique finger style guitar and vocal arrangement on his own of this wonderful old Dylan tune.  I asked him if Ann and I could “mess” with his arrangement and produce/arrange a very different piece using his guitar as the basis of our own related but totally alternate production.  Being kind to us he okayed it and then added a harmonica part to what we did.  

Ken Rachlin is playing slide guitar and bass guitar, Dan Kiely is on finger style rhythm guitar and harmonica, Ann Schurmann is on lead vocals, and David Brandt is on rhythm and lead acoustic guitars, lead vocals, djembe, bongos, and cymbals. 

This one took a few months and was really fun to work on.  I am very proud to add this one as part of our David & Annie Collaboration Catalog!

An LP, sort of a divorce LP, of original songs I put out after being in Reeves Nevo & The Cinch for years. You can hear the hisses/scratches on the LP. Love that. Another version of this song is on Soundcloud as well which Annie and I did live at The Turning Point many years after this original version.  Ed Cherney (recently deceased and who made quite the name for himself in his life) mixed this, David Resnik (Taxxi, Sonya Dada) is on lead guitar (!). Jeff Adamoff (photographer of Doobie Bros and James Taylor LP's) did the art. A early in life divorce inspired this one.

Will The Circle Be Unbroken (Cover, Arr. by David Brandt, 1-1-21)

This is probably one of the larger “productions” I've done. I’d always been moved by Greg Allman’s solo LP version of this tune. The song itself was written in 1907 and has been done countless times. When my father became ill and finally passed in late 2018, I put down a version of this. But everything was out of tune - the banjo, auto harp, etc. So I shelved it. However when my mother became ill this past year, the song came back to me and I decided to re-record everything in it except for the original vocal and rhythm guitar which seemed to me to still carry the spirit/feel that I desired.

This tune is particularly poignant during these Covid times with so much loss/grief.

Then I thought this definitely needed Youth Is Wasted’s touch and so Ann Schurmann and Erick “Peewee” Burdette both kicked in on some super vocal backgrounds and Erick added the driving bass line! Plus Erick added a killer bass lead at the end!!!!!

Then I thought, “hmmmm”, a violin would really be awesome in this and thus entered Natalia Dmukhovskaia from Russia who is a graduate of the Russian Conservatory there - and she knocked it out of the park on her solo!!!!!

Otherwise, I’m on the guitars, glockenspiel, pianos, banjo, autoharp, all percussion and the lead vocal. This was both cathartic and fun to create and produce.

Thanks to Max Ibaceta for his help in bringing this from GarageBand to Logic Pro and w teaching me Logic!

It has been a real joy to have music return these last years. I co-raised a family in the interim, so this channel started as a place to put my kids' talent shows etc., -- they still remain on the YouTube channel. We have all grown!
