LADC - July 2023 - Spirit

This is the live recording from Dreamersland Festival 2023, an improvised Ecstatic Dance dj set made up of my favorite dance tracks from the last 4 years of djing in Ecstatic Dance events in Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, Poland, Germany, UK, Romania, Greece, Norway, Japan. Normally in E Dance I would also play a slower ending to ground people back to meditative state but since it was a short set in a festival setting it was way more difficult to do it the traditional way. Hope you still enjoy!

One of my favourite Ecstatic Dance sessions I played this year so far - Feels like a good first one to share, following nearly a year of no posts, as I launch my Pro Soundcloud account, moving away from Mixcloud. 

This really was a beautiful & powerful cacao fuelled journey; played live at the Ecstatic Experiences retreat in Devon back in Spring. (next retreat's/weekly dances here: https://linktr.ee/ecstaticdance.uk)

Take a few breathes, have a shake, close your eyes and let the music move you & the ceremony begin. As always with EDance we start grounded and steady, so skip 10-15mins if you wanna get into the beats faster :) 

Note this journey also featured live sound healing to follow, which was not recorded.

Ecstatic Cacao Dance - Embercombe UK Retreat

An extremely powerful, wild, sensual and cathartic dance; played out live at the peak of summer, at the Ecstatic Experiences Summer retreat 2023.  

This set was called bold by some for its brave selections! The dance floor received it with the power it was transmitted with. This one went OFF! A true ecstatic journey to evoke all range of movement & emotion. 

Expect a full ecstatic ride here, expect the unexpected. 

Note - the original meditative track was not recorded at the start, nor the live sound healing that followed the set by Sunita Kaur. 

I invite you to take some space for this one, drop into your feet, notice your breath and let the music take you there.

In these intense times of raging war, I am feeling so many things... And more than ever, the calling to return to our ancient wisdom of togetherness becomes tangible. And from this deep listening practice, I keep dancing and singing as a prayer for healing... Because this feels like the only thing that keeps my heart open in the midst of it all.

A deep bow of gratitude to all the amazing people who joined Uria Tsur's Vocal Freedom workshop in Amsterdam. It felt like such an honour to play during the Dance Temple at the end. Danielle and Jeroen from HeartFire create such engaging and ceremonial space. And the Vondelkerk truly took us into realms of great mystery. With the intention to simply listen to the medicine of the moment, we could allow for our unique and shared expressions to pour out…

"The real secret of magic is that the world is made of words," said Terence McKenna, "and that if you know the words that the world is made of, you can make of it whatever you wish."

Here's my version of that hypothesis: What world you end up living in depends at least in part on your use of language.

Do you want to move and breathe amidst infertile chaos where nothing makes sense and no one really loves anyone? Then speak with unconscious carelessness, expressing yourself lazily. Constantly materialize and entertain angry thoughts in the privacy of your own imagination, beaming silent curses out into eternity.

Or would you prefer to live in a realm that's rich with fluid epiphanies and intriguing coincidences and mysterious harmonies? Then be discerning and inventive in how you speak, primed to name the unexpected codes that are always being born right in front of your eyes. Turn your imagination into an ebullient laboratory where the somethings you create out of nothings are tinctured with the secret light you see in your dreams of invisible fire.

“My spiritual practice is writing pop songs. They’re a way to communicate to the world with emotional authenticity, express feelings, and give musicians a voice,” says producer DJ Trotsky. 

DJ Trotsky is a Los Angeles, California-based producer and songwriter who works with pop artists and developing pop artists. He works in a variety of contexts, including turning in complete songs, collaborating from scratch, writing top-line, building tracks from beats up, and simply producing artists with already-written songs. Through these many guises, DJ Trotsky tailors his perspective to suit the situation. “Often the best approach in my work is just me disappearing and serving the song,” he explains. 

Signature to DJ Trotsky’s aesthetic are well-crafted songs brimming with infectious melodies, and often intimate and vulnerable lyrics. From this core, he crafts sleekly modern tracks informed from a lifetime of crate digging as a DJ, and playing organic instruments in rock bands, and his tireless desire to always seek fresh sounds. Along the way, DJ Trotsky has played in funk bands in San Francisco. He has experienced the renaissance of modern electro dance music in Ibiza, Spain. He has reveled in the rumblings of punk, early hip-hop, and dance music in those seismic and formative music moments in New York City at the Mudd Club and CBGBs. And he has DJ-ed exclusive parties in vibey venues in Bali, Thailand, Ibiza, and Estonia. 

DJ Trotsky is a global citizen born David Brownstein, and his chosen moniker is a playful shout out to the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky and his Jewish roots. He’s lived many lives, including being a Grammy-nominated music video producer and internationally-recognized career coach. DJ Trotsky has also released three albums as an artist of vibrantly varied electronic pop produced and recorded all over the world.

Select sample tracks that highlight the prismatic artistry of DJ Trotsky include “Across the Pond,” ”Strange Beautiful Dream,” and “What To Say To A Ghost.” The track “Across the Pond” has been described as “drum n bass n brass” and is a cross-genre symphony of acoustic guitar, be-bop trumpet, synth bass and electronic drum loops, showcasing DJ Trotsky’s songwriting smarts and his edgy production chops. This jam is paired with a warmly lo-fi, iPhone-shot video footage culled from visits to Bali, London, and Thailand that contrast the chaos and the calm of these tropical/urban paradises.

DJ Trotsky has enjoyed a wildly fishtailing music career and life journey, and what keeps him inspired is discovering that next sound, crafting jewels of authentically emotive pop, and connecting with artists as a producer. “I love working with new people, learning about their creative palate—where they’re coming from—and finding common ground,” he says. “The experience is different with every artist, but the process is always surprising and exciting.”
