At the end of the first leg of the Diamond Dogs tour and armed with some new material, David Bowie booked into Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios in August 1974 to lay down some tracks for a new album. For this album, David let go of the influences he had drawn from in the past, replacing them with sounds from local discoteques and dance halls, which, at the time, were blaring with lush strings, sliding hi-hat whispers, and swanky R&B rhythms of Philadelphia Soul. David is quoted describing the album as “…the squashed remains of ethnic music as it survives in the age of Muzak rock, written and sung by a white limey”. Because of the strong influence of black music during the album’s recording sessions, David used the term “plastic soul” (originally coined by an unknown black musician in the 1960s) to describe his new sound. Although David was an English musician bringing up touchy American issues, the album was still very successful in the United States; reaching the top ten in the US, with the single ‘Fame’ hitting the number-one spot the same year the album was released.
In order to create a more authentically soulful sound, David brought in musicians from the funk and soul community, including Andy Newmark, drummer of Sly and the Family Stone, and an early-career Luther Vandross. Luther brought along two of his backing singers, Anthony Hinton and Diane Sumler, who together with Ava Cherry joined David during the sessions.

I have a pretty full backstock, but anyways – just by chance – I’ve chosen ‚Nexus 21 - Life Keeps Movin’ as a representative 1st timer.

Until today I thought this is an underestimated Kevin Saunderson record, which lacks the pop-appeal of the Inner City hits. Surprisingly it turned out: Nexus 21 is a former Altern8 project. And at least Kevin did some remixes on a re-release 12" on KMS. However or even more it is more flowing in a mixed set. And generally my edits will try to serve the DJ’s demands, so I kicked out the badly sung chorus, kept the refrain, extended the acid elements, built some climax and did some classic beat juggle editing.

Usually I try some re-mastering as I often got the original from vinyl (that’s soooo 80ies!!!).

In fact there was no need but stereo expanding and reducing the high peaks for you.

Well, that’s it. The track (formerly a song, :-]) didn’t become fresh, but rough as we can stand old school house today.

Okay folks, here's a 2nd attempt at this track; Although 'Golden Years' was a track from the 1976 Station To Station album, I've always felt that this would have fitted in well on the Young Americans album a year earlier. With this in mind, I took the track back to the drawing (or rather mixing) board, striped Harry Maslin's production right down, remastered each part and then put it together again, adding some backing vocals by Robin Clark, Ava Cherry and Luther Vandross from the '74 Sigma Sound sessions. I think you'll agree it definitely has a Young Americans feel to it. Enjoy!

B I O G R A P H Y :

As well as a musician, David Cantello is a qualified audio engineer and music producer with over 35 years of experience in the business. He has worked in a number of recording studios throughout the UK starting in 1978 with the famous Cargo Studios in his hometown of Rochdale at the very same time that many top bands including Joy Division, The Buzzcocks and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark recorded there. He's also worked at Inner City Sound Studios in Dundee and Mick Hucknall's Cavalier Studios in Stockport.

David has also worked in radio production for the past 11 years starting at Pride Media, and has hosted his own weekend dance music show on local radio. More recently, he's a regular contributor to the 'Ramoana Experience' weekly radio show on Vancouver's LG73, where many of David's remixes and other work can be heard. 

These days, David works freelance from home in his own studio called the Cauldron, where he's currently busy with several projects including a solo project recording his own cover versions of songs made famous by bands from the Post-Punk era. He plans to complete these sometime in 2012. He has also more recently branched out into the field of video and film post-production. David also produces his own artwork and packaging design as part of his music and film work.

David says: "My philosophy is simple; To be able to express oneself in a creative way you don't need structure, you need an empty mind. I've learned never to ask whether I can do something, but to say instead that I am going to do it. Then I fasten my seat belt! The most remarkable things will always follow. And I constantly force myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste. I hope you enjoy my musical pieces here and thank you for visiting."
